Vasodilators and hypertensive encephalopathy following scorpion envenomation in children.

Twenty-three children were admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit for scorpion envenomation with severe hypertension. The hypertension responded to analgesics and sedatives in 15 (65 percent) of the 23. The remaining eight children required specific antihypertensive therapy, and their condition promptly responded to intravenous hydralazine and sublingual nifedipine; rebound hypertension was observed in one. Hypertension is a frequent complication of a scorpion's sting in children, and specific antihypertensive therapy is indicated in severe cases. Hydralazine and nifedipine are effective

Pulmonary infiltration with blood eosinophilia after scorpion sting.

A 30-year-old man developed bilateral pulmonary infiltrates with blood eosinophilia after receiving a scorpion sting. A short course of corticosteroids resulted in rapid improvement. The PIE syndrome after scorpiasis has not, to our knowledge, been described previously.

Epidemiological characteristics of scorpion sting in León, Guanajuato, México.

Poisoning with scorpion venom in the city of León, Guanajuato state, México, is a significant public health problem. The hospital of the Mexican Red Cross gave medical attention to 38,068 cases of envenomation by scorpion sting during 1981-1986; 77% of all accidents occurred among persons under 30 years of age. The 100% survival rate can be attributed to prompt serotherapy. Most stings were due to scorpions from the species Centruroides infamatus infamatus. Scorpion stings increase dramatically in the spring and are lowest during winter. The distribution of scorpions throughout the city is uni…

A mammal toxin derived from the venom of a chactoid scorpion.

1. It has been shown that the low toxicity to mammals (LD50 of about 200 mg per kg mice body weight) of the chactoid scorpion venom Scorpio maurus palmatus (Scorpionidae) is due to a single low molecular weight basic protein. 2. This compound was purified by the aid of gel filtration and ion exchange column chromatography, possessed about 80% of the mice lethality of the crude venom with an increase of about 60 fold in its specific toxicity. 3. It is composed of 32 amino acids (mol. wt = 3478) and devoid of isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, histidine and tryptophan. 4. The unique amino acid

The effect of scorpion venom tityustoxin on the uptake of calcium in synaptosomes.

The effect of tityustoxin on calcium uptake in synaptosomes incubated in hypotonic medium low sodium and physiological medium high sodium was studied. In the hypotonic medium, calcium uptake was ATP and temperature dependent and TsTX inhibits this uptake. The inhibition of calcium uptake was not due to an osmotic effect since it was also observed in conditions of physiological cell osmolarity. In the physiological medium high sodium, tityustoxin stimulated calcium uptake in synaptosomes. The effect was inhibited by tetrodotoxin and cocaine. The stimulating effect of tityustoxin was specific fo

Exocrine pancreatic response to the venom of the scorpion, Tityus trinitatis.

This paper records for the first time the exocrine pancreatic response to scorpion venom, in this case that of Tityus trinitatis, a scorpion endemic in Trinidad. The crude venom injected intravenously into fasting anaesthetised dogs induced a secretion of the exocrine pancreas. The secretion evoked was rich in enzymes.

Investigations on the venom of the South Indian scorpion Heterometrus scaber.

The enzymes from the venom of Heterometrus scaber, the indole compounds present and the toxic protein of the venom have been studied. The venom contains acid phosphatase, ribonuclease, 5'-nucleotidase, hyaluronidase, acetylcholine esterase and phospholipase. A. The indole compounds present in the venom have been identified as 5-hydroxytryptophan, tryptophan, serotonin and tryptamine, along with two unidentified indole compounds. The venom produces hyperglycaemia in sublethal doses and this has been found to be due to increased adrenaline secretion. The toxic protein of the venom has been obtai

[Lanthanum and scorpion venom on the isolated guinea pig ileum].

In the guinea-pig isolated ileum, lanthanum increases the quantity of spontaneously released acetylcholine and induces contracture of this muscle. We have shown that the latter phenomenon is not a consequence of the former. We conclude that it could be due to the Ca++ displaced by La+++. The scorpion venom effects are abolished by lanthanum. We explain this observation by blockage of Ca++ fluxes.
