[Creative work of painters with Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by progressive cognitive and functional decline. Recently, there have been reports in the medical literature on artists who continued to paint while suffering from Alzheimer's. This article describes the changes that occurred in the work of three artists who suffered from Alzheimer's: William Utermohlen, Carolus Horn and Willem de Kooning. In the case of William Utermohlen (1935-2007), Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed at the age of 61. A series of 15 self-portraits that he painted during the years he suffered from Alzheimer's disease provide a rare opportu

Jealousy and the threatened self: getting to the heart of the green-eyed monster.

Several theories specifying the causes of jealousy have been put forth in the past few decades. Firm support for any proposed theory, however, has been limited by the difficulties inherent in inducing jealousy and examining any proposed mediating mechanisms in real time. In support of a theory of jealousy centering on threats to the self-system, 2 experiments are presented that address these past limitations and argue for a model based on context-induced variability in self-evaluation. Experiment 1 presents a method for evoking jealousy through the use of highly orchestrated social encounters

Measurement of self-esteem in repeat assault victims.

Background characterization of assault-related injuries have demonstrated that lifestyle, substance abuse, education, employment, mental illness, and high-risk behavior contribute to low self-esteem in repeat assault victims. Recurrent-assault patients have never been studied with respect to self-esteem. This study evaluated self-esteem and assault-related injury in 28 consecutive male assault patients (11 first-assault and 17 recurrent-assault patients) and 19 controls with no previous assault history. Study participants were administered the Walmyr Assessment Scales Index of Self-Esteem (WAS

Metamemory in narcolepsy.

People with narcolepsy consistently report diminished memory function attributable to the disorder, however, objective evaluations of memory performance in this clinical group remain inconclusive. Previous evaluations of these subjective experiences have been primarily anecdotal with subjects required to provide global assessments of their memory function. The present study aimed to evaluate subjective assessments of memory dysfunction more extensively comparing responses by narcoleptics, subjects experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, and controls, on the Metamemory in Adulthood (MIA) que

Recovery from anorexia nervosa: a Durkheimian interpretation.

Attempts to explain "eating disorders" in contemporary western society have concentrated on aetiology at the expense of resolution. Most "recovered" anorectics, however, question medical definitions of "anorexia nervosa" and clinical criteria for recovery. This article refers to a study of 32 people at different stages of the recovery process, to reconceptualize the problem in sociological terms. Durkheim's account of asceticism offers a fresh interpretive framework in which anorexia and recovery are understood as the negative and positive phases respectively of a ritual of self-transformation

[Theory and method of self-assertion training].

Lack of assertiveness is considered, in the sense of the theoretical concept of Ullrich de Muynck and Ullrich, to be due to such components as 1. abnormal attitude toward oneself, 2. fear of criticism and failure, and 3. inadequately developed social skills; after this, the term 'assertiveness' is defined. Previous therapeutical approaches to the remedying of unassertiveness and the underlying theoretical assumptions are critically examined and discussed with particular reference to their effectiveness. These include the training programs developed by Salter and Wolpe which are characterized b

Mood- and restraint-based antecedents to binge episodes in bulimia nervosa: possible influences of the serotonin system.

BACKGROUND: In bulimic syndromes, binge episodes are thought to be caused by dietary restraint and negative moods. However, as central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) mechanisms regulate appetite and mood, the 5-HT system could be implicated in diet- and mood-based binge antecedents. METHOD: We used hand-held computers to obtain repeated "online" measurements of eating behaviors, moods, and self-concepts in 21 women with bulimic syndromes, and modeled 5-HT system activity with a measure of platelet [3H]paroxetine-binding density. RESULTS: Mood and self-concept ratings were found to be

Pathologizing dissent: identity politics, Zionism and the 'self-hating Jew'.

This article discusses problems with Kurt Lewin's notion of self-hatred among Jews (Lewin, 1941/1948), and illustrates the ways in which the concept is used in identity politics. It argues that the way the notion of self-hatred is often used makes it problematic as a psychological concept because it requires that we accept particular definitions of group identities and particular political positions as central to those identities. Often, however, such issues are disputed by group members. Examination of the literature illustrates that it is rarely a straightforward decision whether those behav

It's Probably Mine: Self-Prioritization Can Be a Decisional Strategy.

Personal possession exerts a significant influence on decision-making, such that stimulus classification is speeded when objects belong to the self (vs. other persons). Exactly when and how this self-prioritization effect arises, however, remains a matter of speculation and debate. Accordingly, adopting a psychophysical approach in combination with computational modeling, here we hypothesized that self-prioritization could derive from the application of an egocentric strategy (i.e., default-to-self response) during decisional processing. Using a modified object-classification task in which par

The Self-Identification Program (SIP): A Clinically Implemented Third-Wave CBT Deepening Dysfunctional Self-Identification in Mood Disorders.

Third-wave cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT3) have progressively shifted the focus of psychotherapy from symptom reduction to process-based and transdiagnostic mechanisms of change, emphasizing self-identification as a core dimension. Within this evolution, the Self-Identification Program (SIP) represents a conceptual and clinical advancement particularly relevant to mood disorders, where maladaptive self-identification, rumination, and self-judgment play central roles. SIP directly targets dysfunctional self-identification-the reification of transient and maladaptive mental contents as def

Fear of positive evaluation and the bivalent fear of evaluation model of social anxiety: An Integration.

Humans have an inherent need to belong to a social group, and ostracism can lead to significant personal costs. Therefore, the fear of negative evaluation by others, along with its associated consequence of social anxiety, appears to be evolutionarily adaptive. Numerous studies have demonstrated that social anxiety, as well as its clinical manifestation, social anxiety disorder (SAD), is not only linked to an intense fear of negative evaluation but also to a fear of positive evaluation. This phenomenon has been termed the Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety. While the fe

Representations of Alopecia in Children's Literature.

Alopecia impacts children's self-esteem and emotional well-being, and early exposure to literature on health conditions can foster awareness and acceptance. This study evaluates the diversity, accessibility, and medical accuracy of children's books on alopecia, assessing their alignment with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) treatment recommendations. While these books represent various alopecia types, hair colors, and textures, they lack sufficient inclusion of healthcare providers, male protagonists, recommended treatments, and external suppor

Factors associated with low self-compassion in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Self-compassion comprises treating oneself non-judgementally with kindness and understanding during life challenges. Our aim was to identify, from among a diverse set of sociodemographic, lifestyle behavioural, psychological, family/peer social influence, and health indicators, factors associated with low self-compassion in a population-based sample of young adults. METHODS: Data on 37 factors potentially associated with low self-compassion were drawn from cycle 23 of the ongoing 24-year Nicotine Dependence in Teens (NDIT) study for 682 participants (Mage 30.5, SD = 1.0, 41% male).

Disturbance at the self-other boundary in schizophrenia: Linking phenomenology to clinical neuroscience.

In this selective review, we describe the current neuroscientific literature on disturbances of the self-other boundary in schizophrenia as they relate to structural and experiential aspects of the self. Within these two broad categories, the structural self includes body ownership and agency, and the experiential self includes self-reflection, source monitoring, and self-referential and autobiographical memory. Further, we consider how disturbances in these domains link to the phenomenology of schizophrenia. We identify faulty internal predictive coding as a potential mechanism of disturbance

Low self-esteem: a refined cognitive behavioural model.

Melanie Fennell's (1997) seminal cognitive approach to low self-esteem was published in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy. The current paper proposes a refined model, drawing on social theories, and research with people with socially devalued characteristics. This model emphasises how self-esteem relates to perceptions of one's value in the eyes of others. It is proposed that core beliefs typical of low self-esteem relate to one's value in relation to personal adequacy (e.g. having worth or status) and/or to social connection (e.g. being liked, loved, accepted or included). In each of th

Clinical and Psychosocial Predictors of Post-Event Processing in Adults Who Stutter.

PURPOSE: Post-event processing, defined by self-critical rumination following a stressful communication event, is significantly associated with reduced quality of life. However, despite its relevance to the stuttering experience, to date, only a few studies have investigated post-event processing among adults who stutter, and no study has identified clinical and psychosocial predictors of post-event processing. The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of clinical markers of stuttering and psychosocial variables to post-event processing. METHOD: Adults who stutter (N = 96)

Conceptualizing Professional Identity Formation in Medicine.

THE WHAT: Professional Identity Formation (PIF) in medicine is the gradual transformation that occurs in the process of becoming a doctor, as professional values, beliefs, behaviors, relationships, roles, and responsibilities become integrated into an aggregate of existing identities. 1 Conceptually, this process may be considered as a trajectory of self-perceived identities that transpires between an individual's existing identity and an evolving, aspirational identity toward which the individual may strive. 2 This process is individualized, yet contextual, psychosocially grounded, and subjec
