Platelet serotonin (5-HT) was higher at 8 a.m. in untreated bipolar depressives than in controls. This high 5-HT was different from unipolar depressives where 5-HT levels were similar to controls but showed altered diurnal rhythmicity. Further differences between unipolar and bipolar patients were found. 5-HT levels and 5-HT uptake into platelets were not correlated in bipolar depressives as found in both unipolar depressives and controls; and 5-HT levels and platelet monoamineoxidase activity tended to be negatively correlated in bipolar but not in unipolar depressives and controls. A longitu…

Angiotensin II released serotonin from neuron terminals and accelerated synthesis of the serotonin. This increase in synthesis depended on the activation of tryptophan hydroxylase. A biphasic effect was observed: at high doses the stimulatory effect depended on conversion of angiotensin II to angiotensin III. At low doses an inhibitory effect was found, possible dependent on an angiotensin II metabolite. These actions represent a subtle regulation of the open-loop serotonin system.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine), an indoleamine with a dual evolutionary legacy in animals and plants, has transcended its initial classification as a secondary metabolite to emerge as a central regulator of plant stress adaptation. This review moves beyond cataloging stress-associated effects to propose a unified framework for serotonin as a dynamic signaling and metabolic hub. I synthesize evidence that serotonin's role is defined not merely by its antioxidant capacity, but by its sophisticated integration into the core stress-signaling circuitry of plants. The key to this function is its in…

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid required for protein synthesis and a precursor of key bioactive metabolites produced through the kynurenine, indole and serotonin pathways. Beyond its nutritional role, tryptophan metabolism critically regulates the nervous, immune and endocrine systems, coordinates circadian rhythms via melatonin, and exerts antioxidant effects. These processes are profoundly remodeled during pregnancy. Pregnancy represents a unique physiological state characterized by systemic adaptations, including changes in immunity and erythropoiesis, while the placenta emerges as a …

Tropane alkaloids and their derivatives represent a diverse class of small molecules with a broad range of therapeutic applications. Many tropanes regulate synaptic levels of neuromodulators by interacting with monoamine transporters such as dopamine (DAT) and serotonin (SERT) transporters. While DAT inhibition plays an important role in the addictive potential of tropanes such as cocaine, recent evidence suggests that SERT modulation may oppose the effects of DAT inhibition. Moreover, SERT modulators such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), ibogaine, and selective-serotonin reuptake …
