Effects of shoe collar types on ankle and knee biomechanics characteristics when performing the side-step cutting task.

This study aimed to examine the effect of football shoes with different collar types on ankle and knee kinematic and kinetics features during 45° and 135° side-step cutting tasks. Fifteen healthy college football players volunteered for the study. Each participant was instructed to perform side-step cutting tasks with high, low, and no collar football shoes. The kinematic and ground reaction force data were measured using a Vicon motion capture system and a Kistler force plate, respectively. Two-way MANOVAs with repeated measures were used to examine the effect of shoe collar type and task con…

Nail Puncture Wound Through a Rubber-Soled Shoe: Should We Take Every Patient to the Operating Room?

Nail puncture wounds through rubber-soled shoes, when presenting acutely, have a deceivingly benign appearance. High index of suspicion for a retained rubber piece should be maintained by the physician. This study investigates whether preoperative ultrasound examination can rule out a foreign body and reduce the need for surgery. It is a retrospective cohort of 125 patients with deep nail puncture wounds through a rubber-soled shoe, who underwent surgical exploration between 2008 and 2018. All patients had a preoperative ultrasound examination for detection of a rubber foreign body. The patien…

Horse shoe flap vaginoplasty--a new technique of vaginal reconstruction with labia minora flaps for primary vaginal agenesis.

Reconstruction of the vagina has always been a formidable surgical challenge. A variety of procedures with varying degrees of success have been described, but none has proved to be the ideal method. We have done 15 vaginal reconstructions using labia minora flaps. In the first eight patients, we used two labia minora flaps and sutured them together to create a neovagina. In the last eight patients this new technique of vaginoplasty using horse shoe labia minora flap was used. The neovagina is dilated gradually for a period of 3 months and at the end of 3 months the patient has an adequate size

Effects of anti-pronation shoes on lower limb kinematics and kinetics in female runners with pronated feet: The role of physical fatigue.

Physical fatigue and pronated feet constitute two risk factors for running-related lower limb injuries. Accordingly, different running shoe companies designed anti-pronation shoes with medial support to limit over pronation in runners. However, there is little evidence on the effectiveness and clinical relevance of anti-pronation shoes. This study examined lower limb kinematics and kinetics in young female runners with pronated feet during running with anti-pronation versus regular (neutral) running shoes in unfatigued and fatigued condition. Twenty-six female runners aged 24.1±5.6 years with …

The development in footprint morphology in 1851 Congolese children from urban and rural areas, and the relationship between this and wearing shoes.

The footprints of 1851 Congolese children were studied using the index of Chippaux-Smirak, Staheli's index of the arch, and Clarke's angle. The sample consisted of 906 girls and 945 boys aged between 3 and 12 years, including city children who wore shoes and children from rural areas who had gone barefoot. At the ages of 3 and 4 years, most feet were morphologically flat, but the proportion of flat feet decreased with age in both sexes. Boys had a greater tendency for flat feet. According to the three parameters studied there was a greater proportion of flat feet in the urban environment. By m…

Combined Effects of Sports Bra Support and Running Shoe Cushioning Influence Breast and Running Biomechanics in Female Runners.

BACKGROUND: Sports bras play a critical role in running, with implications for breast discomfort, pain, performance, potential injury risk, and exercise participation for many women. While breast movement has been analyzed across support levels, most studies focus on discrete time-domain variables, such as peak impact acceleration. However, impact frequency content and tissue vibrations are also key factors that the body, and apparel components such as running shoes, may attenuate to maintain comfort and performance during running. This study explored how different sports bras and running shoe…

Effects of shoe-length mismatch on gait speed and sagittal-plane lower-limb joint motion in healthy adults.

[Purpose] This study examined the impact of shoe-foot length mismatch on gait speed and sagittal-plane lower-limb joint motion in healthy adults during comfortable and maximal-effort walking. [Participants and Methods] Thirty healthy adults participated in the study. Four shoe-length conditions were tested: an appropriately fitted condition and oversized conditions in which shoes were 1-, 2-, and 3 cm longer than the appropriate length. Shoe width was standardized to the appropriate-size for each participant. Gait speed was assessed via 10 m gait time under comfortable and maximal-effort condi…

Quantifying differences in high-pressure region mapping between dynamic in-shoe and barefoot plantar pressure in diabetic subjects.

Foot ulceration is a serious complication of diabetes, often linked to elevated forefoot pressures during walking. Custom accommodative insoles reduce peak plantar pressures, with greater reductions achieved when dynamic pressure data informs design. While in-shoe and barefoot data are used separately to design insoles, their agreement in pressure distribution and high-pressure region location has not been evaluated. This study compares pressure distribution and high-pressure region mapping between in-shoe and barefoot data. In-shoe and barefoot pressures were recorded during walking for 25 fe

Cervical myelopathy screening using in-shoe inertial measurement unit sensors and machine learning focusing on gait disturbance.

PURPOSE: Cervical myelopathy (CM) often presents with gait disturbances, which can lead to falls and spinal cord injury. As the presence of gait disturbances negatively affects postoperative improvement in patients with CM, early detection of gait disturbances is crucial. However, current gait analysis methods require specialisation, limiting their feasibility for screening. This study aimed to perform gait analysis in patients with CM using wearable in-shoe inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors and to develop a screening system using machine learning. METHODS: This study included 26 patient

Advancing Conservative Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: 3D-Printed Shoe Soles for Passive Toe-Out Gait Modification.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate whether a 3D-printed shoe sole can passively replicate toe-out gait biomechanics and reduce the knee adduction moment (KAM) and knee adduction angular impulse (KAAI), addressing limitations of traditional gait retraining. METHODS: Custom shoe soles were 3D-printed using gyroid infill structures to create a rotational hind-sole and a variable stiffness fore-sole ('RVS' shoes). Twenty-one healthy adults completed three baseline gait trials in control shoes, followed by randomised biofeedback-based gait retraining at toe-out angles of 5°, 10° and 15°. After each retrain…

Impact of Contralateral Shoe Lifts on Gait Parameters and Mechanics When Wearing a Controlled Ankle Movement (CAM) Boot.

BACKGROUND: A controlled ankle movement (CAM) walking boot introduces an artificial leg length discrepancy (LLD), which alters gait mechanics and may increase pain. Using a contralateral shoe lift in conjunction with the CAM boot is a common strategy to address this discrepancy; however, the extent to which the shoe lift restores gait biomechanics remains understudied. This study investigates the effects of the combination of CAM boot and contralateral shoe lift on gait parameters compared to normal (shod) conditions. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults (mean age 24.6 ± 7.9 years), including 15 me

The effects of different shoe stack heights and running speeds on full-body running coordination: An uncontrolled manifold analysis.

Stack height is a highly discussed key design feature of running shoes but its effects are not well understood. This study analyzed how shoe stack height and running speed influence full-body running coordination and motor variability structure using an uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis. The joint angle variability (i.e. elementary variables) was analyzed in terms of its effects on a synergy stabilizing the center of mass (CoM, i.e. performance variable). A total of 17 healthy experienced runners participated and ran at 10 and 15 km/h on a treadmill with three running shoes differing in sta…

A study of in-shoe plantar pressure distribution while firefighters carrying self-contained breathing apparatus in walking and running.

Walking and running with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are the most common activities among firefighters, but the effect of SCBA carriage on the plantar pressure distribution remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to analyze plantar pressure distribution while carrying SCBA during walking and running. Thirty volunteer firefighters participated in the walking and running tasks with no SCBA equipped and SCBA carrying conditions. Data of plantar pressure parameters, including peak pressures and pressure-time integrals, were recorded by Pedar-X in-shoe system in participants' wa

Association of Shoe Cushioning Perception and Comfort With Injury Risk in Leisure-Time Runners: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomised Trial.

The attenuation of impact forces was related to lower injury risk. However, runners cannot easily assess these biomechanics when testing new running shoes. Alternatively, the comfort filter has been suggested as a new paradigm relating running shoes and injury risk. This secondary analysis of a large randomised trial aimed to investigate whether the perception of cushioning and global appreciation of running shoes were associated with injury risk. Running exposure and injury data were prospectively collected in healthy recreational runners over 6 months. Study participants completed a question…
