In this hypothesis paper, we propose that hoarding disorder may be an ancestral mammalian behavior, possibly hard-wired but dormant in present-day humans, that can be activated by traumatic experiences. To support this claim, we describe hoarding in ancestral mammals and provide examples of recurrence of traits, or atavisms, in humans and other mammals, highlighting its implications for neuropsychiatric diseases. We highlight the potential of using shrews as animal models for hoarding behavior and, considering the current knowledge on the molecular underpinnings of the disorder, we also point …

Vision in humans and other primates enlists parallel processing streams in the dorsal and ventral visual cortex, known to support spatial and object processing, respectively. These streams are bridged, however, by a prominent white matter tract, the vertical occipital fasciculus (VOF), identified in both classical neuroanatomy and recent diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) studies. Understanding the evolution of the VOF may shed light on its origin, function, and role in visually guided behaviors. To this end, we acquired high-resolution dMRI data from the brains of select mam

Toxoplasmosis, one of the most prevalent parasitic infections in humans and animals, is caused by the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Small mammals play a key role as intermediate reservoir hosts in the maintenance of the T. gondii life cycle. In this study, we estimated the molecular prevalence and provide genetic diversity data for T. gondii in 632 small mammals sampled in four areas of Cotonou city, Benin. Both the brain and heart of each individual were screened through T. gondii-targeting qPCR, and positive samples were then genotyped using a set of 15 T. gondii-specif

Leptospirosis, a widespread zoonotic disease, is a public health problem, especially in major urban centres, and is mainly reported to be associated with rats. In Malaysia, focus has been primarily given to the Leptospira prevalence in rodents per se, but there is lack of information on the microhabitat structure of the outbreak areas. We aimed to determine the diversity of small mammal species, microhabitat types, and their prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in the outbreak areas, which were categorized as urban, semi-urban, and recreational forests. Sampling involved deploying 100 to 3

The embryonal development of Trichocephalus trichiurus and Eucoleus oesophagicola is described. Clevage of both species is full, bilaterally-symmetrical, determined. At the two blastomere stage the epidermis material is localized in the anterior one. The development of both species lacks the rhomb figure characteristic of nematodes. The mouth opening breaks independent of blastopore. The stylet anlage formation was noted for T. trichiurus.

Scrub typhus has re-emerged as an important public health concern in Himachal Pradesh, India, and is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. Effective control efforts are limited by outdated data on ectoparasite vectors and infection rates among reservoir hosts in this endemic region of the Western Himalayas. We conducted a comprehensive field study across eight districts of Himachal Pradesh to examine ectoparasite diversity associated with rodents and shrews in an area endemic for scrub typhus. Small mammals such as rodents and shrews were trapped, and their ectoparasites were collected and morphol…

This paper reports that vasopressin is emetogenic in the house musk shrew Suncus murinus. Either intravenous or intracerebroventricular administration of vasopressin caused vomiting within a few minutes. The ED50 of intravenous vasopressin was as high as 4.67 microg/kg, whereas intracerebroventricularly injected vasopressin was effective at a low dose of 20 ng/brain. The emetogenic target of vasopressin may therefore be present in the central nervous system. We propose the Suncus as a useful animal for investigation of vasopressin-mediated emesis, including motion sickness.

Humanin is a mitochondrial-derived peptide with cytoprotective properties, but how it has evolved in response to different oxidative stress levels in mammals is not fully understood. This study examines how Humanin sequences have adapted to species-specific metabolic and environmental pressures. We compared the peptide in several mammalian species categorized by their distinct oxidative stress profiles: small mammals such as shrews with high metabolic rates and elevated endogenous ROS production, cetaceans exposed to hypoxia-reoxygenation cycles during deep diving, and long-lived primates faci…

In the future, zoonotic spillover events are expected to occur more frequently. Consequences of such events have clearly been demonstrated by recent outbreaks of monkeypox, Ebola virus, and the well-known severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Virus discovery has proven to be an important tool in the preparation against viral outbreaks, generating data concerning the diversity, quantity, and ecology of the vertebrate virome. Orthoparamyxoviruses, a subfamily within the Paramyxoviridae, are important biosurveillance targets, since they include several known animal, human,

Borna disease (BD), a frequently fatal neurologic disorder caused by Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), has been observed for decades in horses, sheep, and other mammals in certain regions of Europe. The bicoloured white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon) was identified as a persistently infected species involved in virus transmission. Recently, BoDV-1 attracted attention as a cause of fatal encephalitis in humans. Here, we report investigations on BoDV-1-infected llamas from a farm in a BD endemic area of Switzerland, and alpacas from holdings in a region of Germany where BD was last seen in the

The pathogens causing Lyme disease are all vectored by generalist tick species found on a wide range of vertebrates, but spatial and annual variation in host use has rarely been quantified. We here compare the load of Ixodes ricinus (the vector) on small mammals and investigate the infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (the pathogen) involved in the enzootic transmission cycle of Lyme disease in two contrasting ecosystems in Norway from 2014 to 2016. The most common larval tick host in the eastern region was the bank vole, while the common shrew dominated in the western region of N

Neuronatin (NNAT) is a small transmembrane proteolipid that is highly expressed in the embryonic developing brain and several other peripheral tissues. This study is the first to provide evidence that NNAT is detected in the adult retina of various adult rod-dominant mammals, including wild-type (WT) rodents, transgenic rodents expressing mutant S334ter, P23H, or T17M rhodopsin, non-human primates, humans, and cone-dominant tree shrews. Immunohistochemical and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses were applied to detect NNAT. Confocal microscopy analysis revealed …

Whereas abdominal temperatures have no effect on spermatogenesis in testicondid mammals but inhibit the process completely in scrotal mammals, the inguinal testes of the naturally cryptorchid musk shrew and degu have been found to display an intermediate response. Twelve to 18 weeks after transposition to the abdomen (and so about 1.5 degrees C above its normal inguinal temperature) the weight of the testis was reduced by 27% (musk shrew) and 52% (degu). Nonetheless, spermatogenesis continued in both, though at a lower rate and with a greater proportion of abnormal spermatozoa formed. The ultr

BACKGROUND: Ixodid ticks are important vectors for zoonotic pathogens, with Ixodes ricinus being the most important in Europe. Rodents are hosts of immature life stages of I. ricinus ticks and are considered main reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens, e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi. The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence as well as genospecies and sequence type (ST) diversity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in ticks and small mammals from central Germany and to elaborate on the influence of environmental and/or individual host and vector factors on Borrelia prevalence.
METHODS: After
