BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Approximately 8% of Blacks have sickle cell trait (SCT), and there are conflicting reports from recent cohort studies on the association of SCT with ischemic stroke (IS). Most prior studies focused on older populations, with few data available in young adults.
METHODS: A population-based case-control study of early-onset IS was conducted in the Baltimore-Washington region between 1992 and 2007. From this study, 342 Black IS cases, ages 15 to 49, and 333 controls without IS were used to examine the association between SCT and IS. Each participant's SCT status was establ…

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is an extremely rare malignancy that has been described in younger male patients of African descent with a history of sickle cell disease or trait. We describe a rather unique case of RMC in an older male patient who initially presented with acute on chronic urinary retention and concern for infection. Further investigation revealed a history of hematuria and long-standing microcytic anemia, and the patient was found to have sickle cell trait (SCT) as part of a workup for malignancy of unknown primary. Imaging findings initially interpreted as hydronephrosis lat…

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a rare and underdiagnosed disorder in the Argentinian population. In this condition, individuals carry the mutation of the HbS gene in one of the two beta-globin genes. In general, SCT does not present with the typical manifestations of sickle cell anemia. However, under certain circumstances, some clinical characteristics of the disease may develop.
METHODS: We discussed the case of a 39-Year old man who presented with persistent abdominal pain of unknown origin after traveling to a high-altitude place. He underwent laparotomy without a definite diagn…

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait (SCT), sickle cell disease's (SCD) carrier status, has been recently associated with worse cardiovascular and renal outcomes. An increased prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is documented in SCD patients; however, studies in individuals with SCT are lacking.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the association of SCT with AF.
METHODS: Among African-American participants in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study we assessed the association of SCT (by ECG or medical history) with prevalent AF using logistic regression adjusting for age…

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive disease not specific to one race. This study aims to assess knowledge about the inherita … disease/trait. In addition, one (1) white female respondent reported having an infant carrying the sickle cell trait. Most respondents (95.9%) knew that sickle cell disease/trait is genetically inherited, but a majority believed that it is associated only with African-Americans (67.8%). Respondents who were college graduates were more likely to correctly identify …

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) has been shown to be protective against malaria. A growing literature suggests that malaria exposure can reduce educational attainment. This study assessed the relationship and interactions between malaria, SCT and educational attainment in north-eastern Tanzania.
METHODS: Seven hundred sixty seven children were selected from a list of individuals screened for SCT. Febrile illness and malaria incidence were monitored from January 2006 to December 2013 by community health workers. Education outcomes were extracted from the Korogwe Health and Demographic Surv…

INTRODUCTION: Eight percent of African Americans are carriers of the sickle cell trait. Some regard this as a benign anomaly, but others point to incidents of sudden exercise-related death, calling for a preliminary screening of either all athletes or those of African-American ancestry. This brief review considers the costs and benefits of such screening.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The Ovid/Health Star data-base was searched from 1996 to June 2015. 2014. The terms "exercise", "exercise therapy", "sports", "athletes", "physical activity/motor activity" and "physical fitness" were combined to yield …

Exertional rhabdomyolysis is a complication of sickle cell trait (SCT) likely first reported in the military population over 40 years ago. Although commonly a benign condition, numerous studies and case reports have identified SCT positive patients to be at increased risk for rhabdomyolysis, compartment syndrome and sudden cardiac death. We report a recent case of an SCT positive African American active duty male Soldier who suffered exertional rhabdomyolysis following an Army Physical Fitness Test. His course was complicated by acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis, and he eventually rec…

We examine the effect of malaria on economic development in Africa over the very long run. Using data on the prevalence of the mutation that causes sickle cell disease, we measure the impact of malaria on mortality in Africa prior to the period in which formal data were collected. Our estimate is that in the more afflicted regions, malaria lowered the probability of surviving to adulthood by about ten percentage points, which is twice the current burden of the disease. The reduction in malaria mortality has been roughly equal to the reduction in other causes of mortality. We then ask whether t

BACKGROUND: Screening for sickle cell trait (SCT) in athletes has been recommended by several professional organizations; however, it is not known how many colleges and universities have implemented such screening in athletes.
AIMS: This study examines factors related to policies and procedures of SCT screening at colleges and universities, including all divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) programs.
METHODS: A total of 375 head athletic trainers or directors of sports medicine from NCAA and NAIA sch…

Sickle cell trait, as opposed to the disease, is a rare condition with fewer medical complications. We present a case of a 24 year old Army recruit, who required multiple fasciotomies for limb compartment syndrome, associated with sickle cell trait. We discuss the management, complications and screening programmes of the condition and make suggestions for the training of sickle cell trait personnel in planning a career in the Armed Forces.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the attitudes of Ghanaian women toward genetic testing for the sickle cell trait and to investigate key factors that promote or impede the decision to pursue knowledge of the carrier status.
METHODS: A survey, administered in person to Ghanaian women, collected demographic information and information on the participants' knowledge about their carrier status, their attitudes toward genetic testing, and their perceptions of the implications of being a carrier. The results for women who had previously undergone testing and those who had not were compared.
RESULTS: Of 124 p…

PURPOSE: It remains unclear whether habitual physical activity in sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers modulates the levels of resting and postexercise vascular adhesion and inflammatory molecules.
METHODS: Plasma levels of pro-inflammatory (interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-8, sCD40L, and tumor necrosis factor α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines and adhesion molecules (soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), sP-selectin, or sE-selectin) were assessed at rest and in response to an incremental exercise to exhaustion in untrained (…

OBJECTIVE: To clarify whether sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers (SCT group) present a specific postexercise inflammatory response to repeated and strenuous exercise.
DESIGN: The patterns of inflammatory markers in response to repeated heavy exercise were investigated in SCT carriers (SCT group: eight men, 20.0+/-0.7 years) and subjects with normal haemoglobin (CONT group: seven men, 20.6+/-0.7 years). The exercise consisted of three successive maximal ramp exercise tests, interspaced with 10 min of recovery, and accomplished at room temperature. Blood was sampled at rest (T(R)), at the end of …
