Erythema is commonly assessed to detect early signs of pressure injuries (PrIs). Thermography has emerged as a promising tool for PrI detection; however, correlations between temperature changes and erythema have not been consistent across skin tones. This study evaluated whether thermography and colorimetry could track temperature and erythema changes following cupping across diverse skin tones. Tissue changes were induced over a bony prominence using a cupping device at - 30 kPa for 5 min. Thermal images and colorimeter measurements were collected immediately after cupping and at one-minute

Hyperthermia and its effect on tissues are topics of great interest to scientists working in the area of radiation biology and medicine. It has been shown by many workers, that blood flow in malignant tissue displays a different response to heating than that in normal tissue. Initially, the blood flow in tumour tissue is greater than that in normal tissue, and when heat is applied there is an increase in blood flow. The extent of the increase in flow with increasing temperature is greater in normal tissue than in tumour tissue. In our laboratory we studied the effect of temperature on skin blo

A study was conducted of 2 young adult women with pituitary insufficiency and complaints of hot flushes. Both underwent continuous recordings of skin temperature of the finger and skin resistance over the sternum as objective indices of flushing episodes. Frequent blood samples were also obtained during the recordings for the measurement of serum LH and FSH levels. During the 10 h of recording, 12 subjective hot flushes occurred and each was associated with a rise of finger temperature of greater than 1 C. Eighty-five percent of the temperature rises were associated with measurable decreases i…

This study examined the thermal response of human skin in vivo to near-infrared illumination (764 nm) delivered either as a free laser beam … for free-beam illumination and 2.3 mW/mm2 for dermal probe illumination, corresponding to a maximum skin temperature of 43°C. These limits apply to skin tones 1-5, and further research is required to establish safety thresholds for skin tone 6.

Although sleep is of paramount importance for preterm neonates, care of the latter in a neonatal intensive care unit does not favour sleep. Given that several studies in adults have described a 'vegetative preparedness to sleep' (in which distal skin vasodilation before lights-out promotes rapid sleep onset), we looked at whether or not this process operates in preterm neonates. Sleep propensity was assessed in terms of the duration of a spontaneous episode of wakefulness (W). Skin temperatures at six body sites (the abdomen, pectoral region, eye, hand, thigh and foot) were measured (using inf…

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have undergone lower limb amputation often struggle with excessive heat and sweating in their prosthetic sockets. This is due to the closed environment of the socket, which disrupts the body's natural cooling mechanisms and can lead to increased skin temperature, sweating, and various skin problems. This study aimed to develop a new socket to alleviate heat buildup in those with below-knee amputation.
METHODS: A positive residual limb model of a below-knee amputee was used to create a new socket made of copper metal through electroforming. A cooling system was prog…

Preliminary human studies show that reduced skin temperature minimises the risk of mechanically induced skin damage. However, the mechanisms by which cooling enhances skin tolerance to pressure and shear remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that skin cooling below thermo-neutral conditions will decrease kinetic friction at the skin-material interface. To test our hypothesis, we measured the friction coefficient of a thermally pre-conditioned index finger pad sliding at a normal load (5N) across a plate maintained at three different temperatures (38, 24, and 16 °C) in 8 healthy young adult…

PURPOSE: Patients with diabetes are often prescribed foot orthoses to help prevent foot ulcer formation. Orthotics are used to redistribute normal and shear stress. Shear stresses are not easily measurable and considered to be responsible for skin breakdown. Local elevation of skin temperature has been implicated as an early sign of impending ulceration especially in regions of high shear stress. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of commonly prescribed insole materials on local changes in plantar foot temperature during normal gait.
METHODS: Six commonly used foot orthosis …

Subjects that repeatedly have to expose the extremities to cold may benefit from a high peripheral temperature to maintain dexterity and tissue integrity. Therefore, we investigated if repeated immersions of a hand and a foot in cold water resulted in increased skin temperatures. Nine male and seven female subjects (mean 20.4; SD 2.2 years) immersed their right (trained) hand and foot simultaneously in 8°C water, 30 min daily for 15 days. During the pre and post-test (days 1 and 15, respectively) the left (untrained) hand and foot were immersed as well. Pain, tactile sensitivity and skin tempe…

Skin sympathetic vasomotor control can be examined in the extremities by the skin vasomotor test. In this test the change in skin blood flow and skin temperature in the hand and foot in response to a cold stimulus is utilized as an index of distal sympathetic nerve fibre integrity. This is of importance in conditions such as diabetes mellitus as peripheral autonomic neuropathy is associated with orthostatic hypotension and diabetic foot complications. The validity and reproducibility of the test as a marker of distal sympathetic nerve function has been studied. The test was performed in nine h…

The snug fit of a prosthetic socket over the residual limb can disturb thermal balance and put skin integrity in jeopardy by providing an unpleasant and infectious environment. The prototype of a temperature measurement and control (TM&C) system was previously introduced to resolve thermal problems related to prostheses. This study evaluates its clinical application in a setting with reversal, single subject design. The TM&C system was installed on a fabricated prosthetic socket of a man with unilateral transtibial amputation. Skin temperature of the residual limb without prosthesis at baselin…

The crocodylians are ectothermic semi-aquatic vertebrates which are assessed to have evolved from endothermic terrestrial forms during the Mesozoic. Such a physiological transition should have involved modifications in their cardio-vascular system allowing to increase the heat transfers with the surrounding environment by growing a peripheral vascularization which would be mainly located in the dermal skeleton: the dermatocranium and the osteoderms. In order to assess the implication of these anatomical regions in thermal exchanges, we have recorded the temperature above a set of representativ

Six skin refrigerants were evaluated for maximum cooling temperature. The temperatures produced correlated well with the chemical components and also the gelatin freeze-thaw times. Freon 114 and Freon 114-ethyl chloride mixtures are time-tested, safe skin refrigerants. Some of the newer skin refrigerants are pure sources of Freon 12 or mixtures of Freon 12 and Freon 11. These newer, colder products have the potential to damage the skin and represent a hazard to successful dermabrasion.
