Older individuals frequently suffer from obstructive sleep apnea yet present with less severe symptoms than younger counterparts. Diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea in older adults poses unexpected challenges owing to poor specificity of screening tools and difficulty attending polysomnography. Continuous positive air pressure remains recommended, although its benefits in this population are not clear and many patients refuse to even attempt the therapy. Emerging research regarding the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea has facilitated greater understanding of potential pharmacologic t

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep disorder affecting a considerable proportion of the adult population. It is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), resulting from recurrent partial (hypopnea) or complete obstruction (apnea) of the upper airway during sleep. Clinically, OSA produces fragmented sleep, loud snoring, excessive daytime somnolence, cognitive dysfunction, and nocturnal diaphoresis. Importantly, OSA is recognized as an independent risk factor for systemic hypertension and is associated with cardiac arrhythmias and stroke. The CIH contributes to t

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but underdiagnosed and undertreated sleep disorder among people with epilepsy (PWE). In PWE, this sleep disorder is often managed as a comorbid condition rather than a contributor to epilepsy outcomes. For many years, OSA has been associated with higher seizure burden and interictal epileptiform discharges. Emerging evidence links OSA to late onset epilepsy (LOE) and increased risk markers for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). This evidence also suggests that treating OSA with continuous positive airway pressure may improve seizure control.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene oxide (EO) is a widely utilized industrial compound known to pose health hazards. Although its carcinogenic characteristics have been thoroughly investigated, recent findings indicate possible links to respiratory disease. The correlation between EO exposure and the likelihood of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in individuals remains unclear. The study aimed to explore the association between EO exposure and OSA within the broader US population.
METHODS: From 2015 to 2020, 4355 participants were analyzed cross-sectionally in the National Health and Nutrition Exam

This study examines the clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and treatment preferences of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to guide personalized treatment strategies. A cross-sectional analysis of 377 patients who underwent polysomnography was conducted, categorizing participants into three groups based on their chief complaints: sleepiness, disturbed sleep, and asymptomatic with comorbidities. Key factors such as body mass index (BMI), comorbid conditions, oxygen saturation levels, and sleep fragmentation influenced treatment choices. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)

INTRODUCTION: According to International classification of sleep disorder (ICSD-3), overnight polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard examination for the diagnosis of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, most of the patients in Japan are not able to access the specialized sleep medical facilities for PSG due to less availability and cost issues. Purpose of this study is to examine whether combination of video monitoring items and other clinical examinations can reliably predict the severity of pediatric OSA compared with PSG.
METHODS: The study subjects were children diagnosed

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) impacts approximately 70 % of stroke patients, often causing fatigue and sleepiness. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduces sleepiness, systematic OSA screening is not standard in post-stroke care, and the effect of untreated OSA on fatigue is unclear. This study investigated changes in sleepiness and fatigue among OSA patients following ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) who underwent CPAP treatment.
METHODS: This prospective multi-center cohort study, ischemic stroke and TIA patients were screened for OSA using r

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an extremely common but underdiagnosed problem in adults receiving dialysis therapy. Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis have a higher prevalence of OSA compared to the general population (Nicholl et al., 2013; Kimmel et al., 1989; Markou et al., 2006). This condition carries significant clinical implications, contributing to impaired sleep quality, daytime fatigue, and elevated cardiovascular risk if left untreated (Marin et al., 2005; Burkhalter et al., 2024). In fact, untreated OSA is associated with markedly

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent yet often underdiagnosed condition affecting 1-5% of children globally, with higher prevalence in populations such as those with Down syndrome and obesity. Characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep, OSA can lead to serious health consequences, including neurocognitive deficits, behavioral issues, and cardiovascular complications. The diagnosis is complicated by symptom overlap with conditions like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) while polysomnography (PSG) remains the gold standard for diagnosis, acce

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a widespread sleep disorder characterized by repeated collapse of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in disruption of sleep. This condition is linked to a host of symptoms, including excessive daytime sleepiness, cardiovascular disorders, and a variety of other comorbidities. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is, by far, the most common treatment for OSA, and has long served as the standard treatment for most patients. However, CPAP therapy has a variety of limitations, including low adherence, and the heterogenous presentation of OSA. Thus, ther

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder in which there is repeated collapse of the upper airway when the person is in sleep, which causes oxygen desaturation and interrupted sleep. While asleep, airway blockages and collapse are accompanied by awakenings with or without oxygen desaturation. OSA is a prevalent disorder, especially in people with known risk factors and other illnesses. Pathogenesis is variable, and the risk factors include low chest volume, erratic respiratory regulation, and muscular dysfunction in the upper airway dilators. The high-risk factors include overweight, male se

The link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and obesity, and their common comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus (DM) or cardiovascular diseases, is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association of OSA severity in obese individuals with polysomnography-based sleep parameters, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) serum levels. Polysomnographic recordings and blood samples were retrospectively compared between a group of 23 adult obese individuals with mild OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) = 7.5 (5.5-12.5)/h, age = 42.57
