Cross-cultural encounters between careproviders: rabbis' referral letters to a psychiatric clinic in Israel.

This paper explores the meaning and social functions of referral letters sent to a mental health clinic in Israel by Haredi (ultra-orthodox) rabbis. The letters exemplify social mechanisms by which various institutions and individuals (careproviders, therapists, and other social actors) negotiate different therapies, advice, and interventions in cross-cultural encounters. We argue that beyond the practical functions of the letters, the rabbis-representatives of a "popular" and religious social sphere-use them to negotiate their position in relation to the psychiatric clinic as a representative

Augmentative and alternative communication in autism spectrum disorder: transitioning from letter board to iPad - a case study.

This case study examines the effective use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools in enhancing communication skills in a 15-year-old male with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Initially exhibiting non-verbal tendencies, the subject experienced significant improvements in communication and social interaction following the introduction of a letter board and subsequent transition to an iPad. These AAC tools facilitated a marked development in his ability to articulate thoughts, engage in academic activities, and express complex ideas, particularly in science. The study highlight

Health Equity and Disparities in ROP Care: A Need for Systematic Evaluation.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disorder that can have devastating visual sequelae if not managed appropriately. From an ophthalmology standpoint, ROP care is complex, since it spans multiple care settings and providers, including those in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), step down nurseries, and the outpatient clinic setting. This requires coordination and communication between providers, ancillary staff, and most importantly, effective communication with the patient's family members and caregivers. Often, factors related to the social determinants of h

Trajectories of symptom reduction and engagement during treatment for childhood behavior disorders: differences across settings.

In this study, we examined trajectories of symptom reduction and family engagement during the modular treatment phase of a clinical trial for early-onset disruptive behavior disorders that was applied either in community settings or a clinic. Participants (N=139) were 6-11 year-old children with diagnoses of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). Symptoms of ODD/CD and level of engagement were assessed at every session during the course of treatment. Overall, symptom reduction was characterized by a gradual decline in symptoms over the first 11 sessions followed by a fla

Children with autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disability characterized by qualitative and persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction and by the presence of restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Symptoms must be present in early childhood and they must limit and impair everyday functioning. There is an increased prevalence of epilepsy and/or epileptiform electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities in children with ASD. It is estimated that approximately one-third of children and adolescents with ASD experience seizures,

Asperger syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder of social interaction, communication, and a restricted range of behaviors or interests. Although not generally associated with intellectual disability, the severe social disability and, in many cases, associated mental health and other medical problems, result in disability throughout life. The diagnosis is often delayed, sometimes into adulthood, which is unfortunate because there are now a range of interventions available, and the current evidence supports intervention starting as early in childhood as possible. The aim of this

Obstacles for rural American Indians seeking alcohol, drug, or mental health treatment.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with 4 clusters of obstacles (self-reliance, privacy issues, quality of care, and communication and trust) to mental health and substance abuse treatment in 3 treatment sectors for residents of 3 reservations in the United States. Participants (N=3,084) disclosed whether they had sought treatment for emotional, drug, or alcohol problems in the past year and, if so, whether they had faced obstacles in obtaining care from Indian Health Services, tribal services, and other public or private systems. Correlates of these obstacles include

Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Social Behavior Alongside Neuroplastic Changes in a Tsc2+/- Rat Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by altered synaptic connectivity and network organization, resulting in profound impairments in social communication and interaction. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) represents a promising approach to modulate maladaptive plasticity associated with ASD; however, mechanistic evidence from preclinical models remains limited. Here, we investigated whether repeated anodal tDCS targeting the medial prefrontal cortex modulates ASD-relevant social behavioral deficits in a rodent model. Male Tsc2+/- rats with

Sensitivity and specificity of proposed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the potential impact of proposed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHOD: The study focused on a sample of 933 participants evaluated during the DSM-IV field trial; 657 carried a clinical diagnosis of an ASD, and 276 were diagnosed with a non-autistic disorder. Sensitivity and specificity for proposed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria were evaluated using field trial symptom checklists as follows: individual field trial checklist items (e.g., nonverbal communication); checklist items grouped together as described by a single DSM-5 symptom (

Autism, a brain developmental disorder: some new pathopysiologic and genetics findings.

Autism is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder that is typically diagnosed by 3 years of age. Core symptoms of autism include profound deficits in social interaction and communication, restricted interests, stereotyped responses, and other repetitive patterns of behavior. Other abnormalities include mental retardation and comorbid epilepsy. These symptoms underscore the consequences of genetic inheritance for brain function and behavior. The etiology of autism may involve an interaction between genetic susceptibility (mediated by multiple genes) and environmental factors influencing brain deve

Evolving prosocial and sustainable neighborhoods and communities.

In this review, we examine randomized controlled trials of community interventions to affect health. The evidence supports the efficacy of community interventions for preventing tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use; several recent trials have shown the benefits of community interventions for preventing multiple problems of young people, including antisocial behavior. However, the next generation of community intervention research needs to reflect more fully the fact that most psychological and behavioral problems of humans are interrelated and result from the same environmental conditions. The

Derivation of induced pluripotent stem cells (SDUKIi003-A) from a 20-year-old male patient diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

Autism spectrum disorder is a heterogenous neurodevelopmental disorder. The patients experience challenges in social interaction and communication skills as well as restricted and/or repetitive behaviors. To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying developmental brain disorders, patient-derived cellular models represent a useful tool. We have generated a human induced pluripotent stem cell line (SDUKIi003-A) from skin fibroblasts derived from a 20-year old male patient diagnosed with Asperger syndrome ("FYNEN-cohort" of Southern Denmark). The reprogramming of the fibroblasts was accompli

Ten years of using the APACS test: a multistudy cross-diagnostic analysis of pragmatic profiles and their relationship with Theory of Mind.

Pragmatic impairments are largely documented, yet rarely considered in clinical practice, also owing to a poor characterization of pragmatic profiles across conditions, as well as some overlap with theory of mind (ToM) in the conceptualization of pragmatics. Here, we present the outcome of a 10-year programme that started with creating a novel test, the Assessment of Pragmatic Abilities and Cognitive Substrates (APACS)-which we evolved by its application alongside ToM assessment in seven clinical groups (i.e. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, right-hemisphere stroke, Parkinson

Influence of social inclusion and institutional culture on students' interactions in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Decolonisation of the Speech-Language and Hearing (SLH) professions in South Africa to be Afrocentric is a current focus. These professions continue to hold white Eurocentric English and/or Afrikaans knowledges and practices, which are reflective of the minority. As diversity of students in higher education increases, the obvious incongruency between the language of learning and teaching (English) and institutional culture of the programmes and students who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) becomes heightened. OBJECTIVES: The study's aim was to explore the learning and s

Understanding the experience of initiating community-based physical activity and social support by people with serious mental illness: a systematic review using a meta-ethnographic approach.

BACKGROUND: People with long-term serious mental illness live with severe and debilitating symptoms that can negatively influence their health and quality of life, leading to outcomes such as premature mortality, morbidity and obesity. An interplay of social, behavioural, biological and psychological factors is likely to contribute to their poor physical health. Participating in regular physical activity could bring symptomatic improvements, weight loss benefits, enhanced wellbeing and when undertaken in a community-based group setting can yield additional, important social support benefits. Do blushing phobics overestimate the undesirable communicative effects of their blushing?

Previous research indicated that blushing has socially threatening revealing effects in ambiguous situations. To explain blushing phobics' fearful preoccupation with blushing, we tested the hypothesis that blushing fearful individuals overestimate its revealing effects. High (n = 20) and low (n = 20) blushing fearful individuals read vignettes describing prototypical mishaps and ambiguous social events. Participants were prompted in the perspective of the actor, and were asked to indicate their expectations of the observers' judgments (meta-perceptions). Blushing fearful individuals overestima

The reentry process of adolescents.

The authors have been able to follow up on a number of residents over the years. Most of them have frequently referred to the helpfulness of the seminars during their reentry phase. Some have sought out private counseling once they felt problems cropping up. While there is no abundance of jobs awaiting the adolescent graduate, they must be prepared to the best of their, and the TC's, ability to confront the world. TCs need to provide them with the ability and skills to cope with the many realities they will be called on to face. A serious review of the adolescent TC process is called for, with

Brief report: social and communication abilities and disabilities in higher functioning individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Individuals with higher functioning autism (HFA) fail to translate their cognitive potential into real-life adaptation, and the severity of their symptoms is considerable despite their intellectual ability. This paper reports on a subsample from a larger study (A. Klin et al., in press) analyzed here by autism spectrum subtypes. It focuses on the nature of ability and disability in HFA and Asperger syndrome (AS) in relation to age and IQ. Participants included 32 individuals with autism and 35 with AS. Individuals with AS had significantly higher Verbal IQ scores and less symptomatology than i

[My child stutters! Which speech disorders are to be treated by a specialist?].

The etiology of stuttering is multifactorial. Developmental disturbances in "speech flow" usually clear up within six months. However, inappropriate reactions on the part of the child's surroundings (parents, unqualified physicians), but also psychosocial problems, may consolidate the disorder. Chronic stuttering may, under certain circumstances have far-reaching consequences for communication and social behavior, and even impact negatively on the victim's subsequent occupational life. A qualified diagnostic work-up leading to appropriate early pedaudiological and logopedic therapeutic measure

[Psychological analysis and correction of early childhood autism of schizophrenic etiology].

A total of 63 patients were investigated in order to provide a psychological analysis of schizophrenia-related early childhood autism (ECA). Need and motivation were shown to play a major role in the disordered interpersonal communication characteristic of two types of mental dysontogenies in the pattern of ECA under this investigation. The dysontogeny type showed a relation to the nature and depth of communicative disorder. The ways of its psychological correction targeted at the ECA children's social rehabilitation were outlined.
