Daily marijuana use and suicidality: the unique impact of social anxiety.

Despite a clear relationship between marijuana use and suicidality, little is known about psychological vulnerability factors that may interact with marijuana use to increase suicidality among this high-risk group. The present study examined the moderational impact of social anxiety on the relationship between marijuana use status (current users vs abstainers) and suicidality among 343 community adults. We also examined whether social anxiety moderated the relation between more frequent use (daily vs less frequent) among the 134 current marijuana users. Although social anxiety did not moderate

Are there specialized circuits for social cognition and are they unique to humans?

Discussions of the neural underpinnings of social cognition frequently emphasize the distinctiveness of human social cognition. Here, however, we review the discovery of similar correlations between neural networks and social networks in humans and other primates. We suggest that component parts of these neural networks in dorsal frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and superior temporal sulcus (STS) are linked to basic social cognitive processes common to several primate species including monitoring the actions of others, assigning importance to others, and orienting behavior towa

Do Medicare Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patients' Self-care and Mobility Outcomes Vary by Dual Eligibility Status, Race and Ethnicity, Rural Residence, Socioeconomic Status, and Living Alone?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to examine whether inpatient rehabilitation facility patients' risk-adjusted functional outcomes varied with the following five social drivers of health: Medicare-Medicaid dual eligibility status, race and ethnicity, rural residence, socioeconomic status, and living alone. DESIGN: This cohort study examined unadjusted and adjusted mobility and self-care change scores during inpatient rehabilitation facility stays for 428,710 Medicare patients with and without social drivers of health. Regression models isolated the mean marginal effect of each of the five so

Peer Rejection and Group Autonomy in the Latency Stage: A Qualitative Analysis of Children's Voices in the Classroom Context.

Background/Objectives: Social rejection during the latency stage is a significant risk factor for children's emotional and social development. Whereas earlier research focused primarily on individual characteristics of rejected children, contemporary perspectives emphasize peer-group processes, including norm formation, hierarchies, and social status structures. Although autonomy has been widely examined as an individual developmental construct, less attention has been given to its possible collective expression within the classroom peer group. This study aimed to explore how children understa

Associated factors for cognitive impairment in the rural highly elderly.

BACKGROUND: Among the symptoms commonly faced by an increasingly aged population, dementia, preceded by cognitive impairment, most threatens their quality of life. Dementia is a well-recognized burden, not only for individuals who face the disease and for their families, but also for entire nation. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to identify associated factors for cognitive impairment in a very elderly population via a screening study design in Sokcho, a rural area in South Korea. METHODS: Trained nurses screened patients from 75-84 years of age for dementia using the Mini-Mental State E

Relationship between social capital and post-partum antiretroviral therapy adherence among women living with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for preventing vertical transmission of HIV and maternal deaths. While the literature is replete with studies on ART adherence, the role of social capital in adherence to ART is less studied. Drawing from the social cognitive theory, this study examines the relationship between social capital and post-partum adherence to ART. METHODS: We analysed data from 481 post-partum women with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Adherence to ART was measured using a validated scale, capturing self-reported medication-taking behaviours.

Social connections predict brain structure in a multidimensional free-ranging primate society.

Reproduction and survival in most primate species reflects management of both competitive and cooperative relationships. Here, we investigated the links between neuroanatomy and sociality in free-ranging rhesus macaques. In adults, the number of social partners predicted the volume of the mid-superior temporal sulcus and ventral-dysgranular insula, implicated in social decision-making and empathy, respectively. We found no link between brain structure and other key social variables such as social status or indirect connectedness in adults, nor between maternal social networks or status and dep

Review on vocational predictors: a systematic review of predictors of vocational outcomes among individuals with schizophrenia: an update since 1998.

OBJECTIVE: Predictors of employment outcomes of individuals with schizophrenia have continued to be studied over the past decade with implications for the development of vocational interventions to help the mentally ill get and keep jobs. METHODS: A total of 62 relevant studies since 1998 were systematically reviewed by means of meta-analysis and frequency counts. Frequency count allowed all 62 studies to be included, whereas the meta-analysis excluded studies with inadequate information but made it possible to estimate the magnitude of effects. RESULTS: Both methods resulted in similar find

Does the global activity limitation indicator measure participation restriction? Data from the European Health and Social Integration Survey in Spain.

PURPOSE: The global activity limitation indicator (GALI) is the only internationally agreed and harmonised participation restriction measure. We examine if GALI, as intended, is a reflective measure of the domains of participation; furthermore, we determine the relative importance of these domains. Also, we investigated the consistency of response to GALI by age and gender and compared the performance of GALI with that of self-rated health (SRH). METHODS: We used Spanish data from the European Health and Social Integration Survey and selected adults aged 18 and over (N = 13,568). Data analysi

Paranoia and Social Anxiety: Predicting Aggressive Behavior.

Aggression is a transdiagnostic behavior that is associated with poor clinical outcomes. As such, it is important to understand factors that contribute to various manifestations of aggressive behavior. Recent research has revealed a subtype of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) who tend to display relatively high amounts of aggression and experience more severe social anxiety and dysfunction compared to individuals in the prototypical SAD group. The current study used a status threat manipulation along with behavioral indices of aggression to examine the impact of paranoia and soci

Baseline Social Functioning Is Associated with Increased Likelihood of Remission from a Clinical High Risk for Psychosis Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Most individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) will not develop psychosis. Moreover, a proportion of individuals who meet the criteria for a CHR syndrome at one time point stop meeting the criteria at follow-up. It is unknown whether there are specific baseline resiliency factors associated with CHR-positive symptom remission. The literature suggests that among the possible resiliency factors premorbid social functioning may be particularly important. Here, we examine how social functioning at baseline is related to remission status among CHR participants

Social needs and social vulnerability are associated with outpatient orthopedic physical therapy outcomes: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health may contribute substantially to health outcomes, yet their relationship to outpatient orthopedic physical therapy outcomes remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether individual social needs, community-level social vulnerability, and self-rated health were independently associated with discharge functional status among adults receiving outpatient orthopedic physical therapy after adjustment for baseline function. Secondary exploratory analyses examined associations with baseline function and functional change. METHODS: A prospectiv

Comparing the Impact of COVID-19-Related Social Distancing on Mood and Psychiatric Indicators in Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) and Non-SGM Individuals.

Empirical evidence demonstrates mental health disparities between sexual and gender minority individuals (SGM) compared with cisgender heterosexual individuals. SGM individuals report elevated rates of emotional distress, symptoms related to mood and anxiety disorders, self-harm, and suicidal ideation and behavior. Social support is inversely related to psychiatric symptoms, regardless of SGM status. The COVID-19 pandemic-with its associated limited social interactions-represents an unprecedented period of acute distress with potential reductions in accessibility of social support, which might

Social anxiety disorder and shame cognitions in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is surprisingly prevalent among people with psychosis and exerts significant impact on social disability. The processes that underlie its development remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between shame cognitions arising from a stigmatizing psychosis illness and perceived loss of social status in co-morbid SAD in psychosis. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study. A sample of individuals with SAD (with or without psychosis) was compared with a sample with psychosis only and healthy controls on shame proneness, sham

Military-to-Civilian Transition Stressors Associated With Couples' Intimate Partner Violence.

OBJECTIVE: Higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) have been documented among veterans, compared to those who are currently serving. However, no known studies have examined associations between IPV and transition-related stressors among couples who have recently separated from military service. This study aimed to address this gap by examining associations between military status, transition-related stressors, and IPV. METHOD: Using survey data from the Millennium Cohort Family Study, we examined associations between U.S. service members' military status (currently serving: n = 1,581;

[Gynaecologic follow up, physicians involved and cervical smears: An accumulation of social disparities].

OBJECTIVES: This study analysed how social disparities are built in the health process leading to the achievement of cervical smears. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study included women over 40 years eligible for cervical cancer screening and recruited randomly in the patient base of 52 volunteer general practitioners (GP). Judgement criteria were (1) the existence of a gynaecological follow up, (2) provided by a GP (versus gynaecologist), and (3) the "up to date" status for the cervical smear. Occupational class, education, and perceived financial condition evaluated social positio

Social relationships and mortality risk: a meta-analytic review.

BACKGROUND: The quality and quantity of individuals' social relationships has been linked not only to mental health but also to both morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: This meta-analytic review was conducted to determine the extent to which social relationships influence risk for mortality, which aspects of social relationships are most highly predictive, and which factors may moderate the risk. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were extracted on several participant characteristics, including cause of mortality, initial health status, and pre-existing health conditions, as well as on study characteris

[Social competence in children with social adjustment disorders].

Teachers and parents of a sample of 1774 students at three grade levels (4th, 6th and 8th grades) were asked to judge the social competence of the children by means of the social competence questionnaire by Buhrmester et al. (1988). These ratings were correlated with the social status of the pupils, with peer statements on aggressive behavior and victimization and with the teachers' ratings of behavior in class and towards fellow pupils. Teachers proved to be more critical than parents, crediting boys with less social competence than girls, though this difference diminished in the higher grade

Poor Social Network, Not Living Alone, Is Associated With Incidence of Adverse Health Outcomes in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Although it has been suggested that living alone is a "social risk factor" for adverse health outcomes, poor social network may confound the association. This study aimed to examine whether the interactive effects of living alone and poor social network contribute to adverse health outcomes. DESIGN: A 4-year prospective observational study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Four hundred community-dwelling older adults living in Itabashi ward, an urban community in Tokyo. They participated in a health checkup (held in 2015 and 2017) and completed all the assessments. METHODS: Participants
