Beyond social tinkering: Toward a mechanistic and multilevel theory of cultural complexity.

Chater and Christiansen argue that cultural complexity arises through social "tinkering." While compelling, this framework remains mechanistically underspecified. Integrating recent empirical and theoretical advances, this commentary proposes that cultural complexity emerges from interactions among transmission dynamics, cognitive constraints, social network structure, and environmental pressures and calls for a formalized, testable multilevel theory.

Rethinking health in later life: A six-dimensional model based on the European SHARE survey.

The accelerating global aging population requires updated conceptualizations and measurements of health in later life. While traditionally framed around physical, mental, and social dimensions, recent research suggests that additional dimensions may form part of the broader health construct in older adults. However, empirical validation of such multidimensional health constructs using population-based data remains limited. We analyzed data from 46,317 participants aged 50-104 years (M = 71.33, SD = 9.34; 42.6 % men, 57.4 % women) from Wave 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Eu

The Moderating Effect of Social Capital on the Relationship Between Loneliness and Depression in Older Adults.

Loneliness contributes to depression in older adults, but research on effective intervention strategies remains limited. This study aims to examine the moderating effects of social capital on the relationship between loneliness and depression in older adults. Social capital was divided into structural and cognitive social categories. A self-report questionnaire was administered to 350 participants aged 65 or older, using the Korean version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Short-Form Geriatric Depression Scale, Structural Social Capital Scale, and Cognitive Social Capital Scale. Data from 334 pati

Polygenic risk for schizophrenia predicting social trajectories in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: We investigated (a) whether polygenic risk for schizophrenia predicts different trajectories of social development among those who have not developed psychoses and (b) whether possible associations are PRSSCZ-specific or evident also for any polygenic risk for mental disorders, e.g. for major depression. METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Young Finns Study (n = 2377). We calculated a polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (PRSSCZ) and for major depression (PRSDEP). Diagnoses of psychotic disorders were derived from the hospital care register. Social development f

The Hierarchical Structure and Predictive Validity of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in Chinese Nonclinical Adolescents.

To evaluate the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) in Chinese nonclinical adolescents, a total of 1,442 Chinese middle school youths (Mage = 14.85, girls = 52.4%) were recruited in the present study. All the participants completed the full-length 220-item PID-5. Some participants (n = 1,003) were administered adolescents' social adjustment as a criterion measure at the same time and 236 participants took part in longitudinal assessment of the PID-5 and adolescents' social adjustment 6 months later. First, exploratory structural equation m

Evaluating the personality structure of semi-captive Asian elephants living in their natural habitat.

Data on personality for long-lived, highly social wild mammals with high cognitive abilities are rare. We investigated the personality structure of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) by using a large sample of semi-captive timber elephants in Myanmar. Data were collected during 2014-2017 using questionnaires, for which elephant riders (mahouts) rated 28 behavioural adjectives of elephants. Repeated questionnaires were obtained for each elephant from several raters whenever possible, resulting in 690 ratings of 150 female and 107 male elephants. We started by performing a confirmatory factor ana

Medial prefrontal cortex and striatum mediate the influence of social comparison on the decision process.

We compared private and social decision making to investigate the neural underpinnings of the effect of social comparison on risky choices. We measured brain activity using functional MRI while participants chose between two lotteries: in the private condition, they observed the outcome of the unchosen lottery, and in the social condition, the outcome of the lottery chosen by another person. The striatum, a reward-related brain structure, showed higher activity when participants won more than their counterpart (social gains) compared with winning in isolation and lower activity when they won l

Eye-Tracking Evidence of a Maintenance Bias in Social Anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms and triggers of the attentional bias in social anxiety are not yet fully determined, and the modulating role of personality traits is being increasingly acknowledged. AIMS: Our main purpose was to test whether social anxiety is associated with mechanisms of hypervigilance, avoidance (static biases), vigilance-avoidance or the maintenance of attention (dynamic biases). Our secondary goal was to explore the role of personality structure in shaping the attention bias. METHOD: Participants with high vs low social anxiety and different personality structures viewed pair

Causal inference between neurodevelopmental disorders and brain structure among individuals with congenital heart disease: Insights from meta-analysis and Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: To systematically review and meta-analyze the evidence on neurodevelopmental outcomes from infancy to adolescence among patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and to explore the causal relationships among CHD, neurodevelopmental (ND) and brain structure. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant studies. Genetic variants from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) were used to elucidate the causal relationships between CHD, ND, and brain structure. RESULTS: A total of 5824 studies were initially retrieved; ultimately, 23 studies wer

Validation of French and German versions of a Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire among young Swiss males, and its relationship with substance use.

This study main purpose was the validation of both French and German versions of a Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire. The sample group comprised 5065 Swiss men from the "Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors." Multigroup Confirmatory factor analysis showed that a three-factor model fits the data well, which substantiates the generalizability of Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire factor structure, regardless of the language. The Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire demonstrated excellent homogeneity (α = 95) and split-half reliability (r

Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and School Anxiety Inventory: Psychometric properties in French adolescents.

School and social anxiety are common problems and have a significant impact on youths' development. Nevertheless, the questionnaires to assess these anxious symptoms in French adolescents have limitations. The aim of this study is to provide a French version of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI), analysing their psychometric properties by the factor structure, internal consistency, and convergent validity. The SAS-A and the SAI were collectively administered in a sample of 1011 French adolescents (48.5% boys) ranging in age from 11 to 18 yea

Resilience and vulnerability in long term outcome of attention deficit hyperactive disorder.

Follow-up studies of children with attention deficit hyperactive disorder show that they continue to have problems with restlessness, over-activity, impulsive behaviour and inattention, often resulting in serious academic, social and emotional problems in adolescence. Outcome in adulthood generally falls into three groups: fairly normal outcome, persistent attentional, social, emotional and impulse problems, and serious psychiatric and/or social pathology. Factors affecting outcome include characteristics related to the child (for example, health, temperament, IQ) and characteristics of the fa

Social Determinants of Cardiovascular Health in Asian Americans: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

To achieve cardiovascular health (CVH) equity in the United States, an understanding of the social and structural factors that contribute to differences and disparities in health is necessary. The Asian American population is the fastest-growing racial group in the United States but remains persistently underrepresented in health research. There is heterogeneity in how individual Asian American ethnic groups experience CVH and cardiovascular disease outcomes, with certain ethnic groups experiencing a higher burden of adverse social conditions, disproportionately high burden of suboptimal CVH,

Development and initial validation of The Sexual Orientation Beliefs Scale (SOBS).

The purpose of these studies was to develop and validate a measure of beliefs about sexual orientation (SO) that incorporates essentialist, social constructionist, and constructivist themes. The Sexual Orientation Beliefs Scale (SOBS) is offered as a multidimensional instrument with which to assess a broad range of beliefs about SO, which evidence suggests are highly correlated with positive and negative attitudes about sexual minorities. An initial exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted in the general population with a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender-identified (LGBT) sample

The Relationship Between Social Isolation and Mortality Among Adults Aged 50 and Older in a 12-year Follow-Up Analysis in Mexico.

Social relationships have a complex nature shaped mainly by two dimensions: structure and function. Previous research raised the importance of considering both features simultaneously given that they may operate differently. However, research on social relationships and mortality mainly refers to European and U.S. populations. This study examines structural and functional features of social relationships to understand social isolation among adults aged 50 and older in Mexico. In addition, we analyze that association with mortality, using panel data from a 12-year follow-up from the Mexican Hea

Redefining Peer Tutoring: Academic and Social Gains Through Twice-Exceptional Student Leadership.

This study explored the dual effects-both academic and social-of a peer tutoring framework where a twice-exceptional student with autism spectrum disorder (2e-ASD) served as a tutor for three students with learning disabilities (LDs). The goal was to assess whether peer-mediated instruction could improve tutees' reading accuracy while fostering tutors' social development. Using a multiple baseline design across participants, with a numerous probe structure, ensured rigorous methodology and intervention fidelity. Reading accuracy was systematically monitored across phases, and social validity f

Inequalities between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians seen through the lens of oral health: time to change focus.

Inequitable social environments can illustrate changes needed in the social structure to generate more equitable social relations and behaviour. In Australia, British colonization left an intergenerational legacy of racism against Aboriginal people, who are disadvantaged across various social indicators including oral health. Aboriginal Australian children have poorer health outcomes with twice the rate of dental caries as non-Aboriginal children. Our research suggests structural factors outside individual control, including access to and cost of dental services and discrimination from service…

Social support and risk of mortality in cirrhosis: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The function and structure of social relationships influence mortality in individuals within the general population. We compared aspects of social relationships in individuals with cirrhosis and a matched comparison cohort and studied their association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and mortality in cirrhosis. METHODS: Individuals with cirrhosis and comparators were identified among participants of the Danish National Health Surveys 2010-2017. The surveys included questions on functional (social support and loneliness) and structural (living alone/cohabitating
