Validation of hierarchical taxonomy in a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Quantitatively derived dimensional models of psychopathology enjoy overwhelming empirical support, and a large and active community of psychopathology researchers has been establishing an empirically based dimensional hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology (or HiTOP) as a strong candidate replacement for the current categorical classification system. The hierarchical nature of this taxonomy implies that different levels of resolution are likely to be optimal for different purposes. Our aim was to identify which level of detail is likely to provide optimal validity and explanatory

Development and validation of a patient-reported outcome instrument for skin involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument to assess the skin-related quality of life in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: Participants with SSc provided input on skin-related health effects through focus groups. We developed items for scleroderma skin PRO (SSPRO) to encompass these effects. Further consideration from cognitive interviews and an expert panel led to reduction and modification of items. A 22-item SSPRO was field tested. Psychometric analysis included test-retest reliability, internal consistency and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Con

Development of a sickle cell disease readiness for transition assessment.

BACKGROUND: Instrumentation with established reliability and validity is not yet routinely utilized to assess readiness for transition from pediatric to adult care for youth and young adults with chronic conditions, including sickle cell disease (SCD). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a SCD specific readiness for transition assessment tool. SUBJECTS: Fifty-seven youths with SCD, ages 15-21 years, completed the initial version of the Transition Intervention Program - Readiness for Transition (TIP-RFT) assessment; 113 youths/young adults with SCD, ages 14-26 years, at two distin

Atypical depression: useful concept, but it's time to revise the DSM-IV criteria.

Stewart et al (2009) have outlined the evidence in support of the validity of the DSM-IV definition of the 'With Atypical Features' episode specifier. Although recognizing the historical significance and clinical utility of the concept of atypical depression, this article takes issue with the DSM-IV criteria. It is concluded that mood reactivity, the A or obligative criterion, is neither significantly associated with the other symptomatic criteria nor useful to diagnose atypical depression, and thus should be eliminated. Problems with operationalization, specification, and reliability of ratin

The Impact of Chronic Skin Disease on Daily Life (ISDL): a generic and dermatology-specific health instrument.

BACKGROUND: In dermatological research and clinical practice, there is a need for comprehensive self-report instruments that assess a broad spectrum of health implications of chronic skin diseases, including generic and skin-specific aspects of disease-related quality of life. The advantages of dermatology-specific, multidimensional instruments over generic instruments or single-dimensional quality-of-life measures are in the detailed and specific information they provide about health areas that are affected by the skin condition and that may change through therapeutic intervention. OBJECTIVE

[Assessing common factors in psychotherapy: psychometric properties of a new time-economic instrument (WIFA-k)].

Research on common and differential factors in the therapeutic process is impeded by the lack of instruments suitable for assessing common change mechanisms. This study presents the psychometric properties of a newly developed time-economic instrument (WIFA-k), which was designed to assess common factors of psychotherapy as designed by Grawe. Within a multi-center study comparing the efficacy of cognitive therapy and psychodynamic therapy in the treatment of social phobia, 6 raters assessed 25 randomly selected, videotaped therapy sessions of each treatment approach, and evaluated common facto

Constructs assessed by the GARS-2: factor analysis of data from the standardization sample.

The GARS-2 (Gilliam 2006) is widely used for autism screening; however, the validity of its three conceptually-derived subscales has not been evaluated. In this study, exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses of data from matched subgroups of the standardization sample did not support the GARS-2 subscale structure. EFAs identified four factors in the model development subgroup (n = 496): stereotyped/repetitive behavior, stereotyped/idiosyncratic language, word use problems, and social impairment. CFAs supported this model in the replication subgroup (n = 494). Findings suggest

The placebo response in social phobia.

The placebo response forms a growing problem in randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in psychiatry. Research into the placebo response is on the increase, but remains very limited in relation to social phobia. Together with the dropout rate, the placebo effect is an important factor limiting the discriminative properties of any study. In this study, we reviewed 15 placebo-controlled studies in social phobia, focussing on patients and study characteristics. In social phobia, the placebo effect has turned out to be moderately large and has shown no increase over the past decade. Placeb

Development and validation of the Brazilian Version of Lay Persons' Social Judgements about Cleft-lip Scale (B-LSojCleft-S).

The aim of this study was to develop and analyze the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Version of Lay Person's Social Judgement about Cleft-lip Scale (B-LSojCleft-S). A standardized photograph of a 16-year-old girl was manipulated by using photo editing software, to simulate different cleft-lip situations. The cleft-free image was used as a control. The researchers structured an initial questionnaire that was evaluated by experts and a sample of the target population to evaluate the construct. After analysis by the researchers, a final version of the B-LSojCleft-S containing 14 items wa

Validity and Reliability of the Core Beliefs Questionnaire in a Sample of Individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Non-Clinical Samples.

BACKGROUND: Core beliefs are cognitive structures that shape one's fundamental assumptions about the self, the external environment, and the future. They play a pivotal role in the development of numerous mental pathologies. The Core Beliefs Questionnaire (CBQ) is one of the inventories developed to evaluate core beliefs. It is comprised of 3 versions: "Trait (CBQT)," "Contingent (CBQC)," and "Others (CBQO)." This study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the CBQ in a Turkish sample. METHODS: The study included 2 groups: a group of individuals diagnosed with generalized anxiety di

The Concise Health Risk Tracking-Self Report: Psychometrics within a placebo-controlled antidepressant trial among depressed outpatients.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: While substantial prior research has evaluated the psychometric properties of the 12-item Concise Health Risk Tracking-Self Report (CHRT-SR12), a measure of suicide propensity and suicidal thoughts, no prior research has investigated its factor structure, sensitivity to change over time, and other psychometric properties in a placebo-controlled trial of antidepressant medication, nor determined whether symptoms change throughout treatment. METHODS: Participants in the multi-site Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response in Clinical Care (EMBARC) stu

Validity of neurodevelopmental outcomes of children born very preterm assessed during routine clinical follow-up in England.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of assessing and recording the neurodevelopmental outcome of very preterm infants during routine clinical follow-up in England. DESIGN: Children born <30 weeks gestation, attending routine clinical follow-up at post-term ages 20-28 months, were recruited. Data on neurodevelopmental outcomes were recorded by the reviewing clinician in a standardised format in the child's electronic patient record, based on a set of key questions designed to be used without formal training or developmental testing. Using a predefined algorithm, each participant was classifie

Evaluating the Validity of a Two-stage Sample in a Birth Cohort Established from Administrative Databases.

BACKGROUND: When using administrative databases for epidemiologic research, a subsample of subjects can be interviewed, eliciting information on undocumented confounders. This article presents a thorough investigation of the validity of a two-stage sample encompassing an assessment of nonparticipation and quantification of the extent of bias. METHODS: Established through record linkage of administrative databases, the Québec Birth Cohort on Immunity and Health (n = 81,496) aims to study the association between Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination and asthma. Among 76,623 subjects classified i

Identification of high risk and early stage eating disorders: first validation of a digital screening tool.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are amongst the deadliest of all mental disorders, however detection and early intervention rates remain extremely low. Current standardised screening questionnaires can be arduous or confronting and are ill-validated for online use, despite a universal shift to digital healthcare. The present study describes the development and pilot validation of a novel digital screening tool (the InsideOut Institute-Screener) for high risk and early stage eating disorders to drive early intervention and reduced morbidity. METHODS: We utilised a mixed cross-sectional and repeat

Investigating the Association Between Social Support and Quality of Life in People With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by symptoms such as pain, inflammation of joints, fatigue, and impaired functionality. Depression and anxiety are common in this population of patients. Research suggests that social support, whether received or perceived, can improve the Quality of Life (QoL) of people with RA. This systematic review examined the relationship between social support and QoL in individuals with RA. METHODS: Five databases were searched with no restriction on dates. Studies were included if they used validated instruments or inte

A novel child-centred core palliative care outcome measure for use in clinical practice and research: findings from a multinational validation study.

BACKGROUND: Outcome measurement is pivotal to person-centred assessment, quality improvement and research. Children and young people with life-limiting and -threatening illness have high needs and service use, yet there is a lack of evidence for interventions and care models. Efforts to strengthen paediatric palliative care (PPC) services has been hampered by the lack of an appropriate outcome measure. OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity, reliability, measurement invariance, responsiveness, acceptability, and interpretability properties of the novel Children's Palliative care Outcome Scale (

Assessment of quality of life in people with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa: a comparison of generic and specific instruments.

BACKGROUND: Criticisms that generic measures of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are not sensitive to impairment in anorexia nervosa (AN) has spurred the development of disease-specific measures. This study aimed to compare the psychometric properties of a generic to a disease-specific measure of HRQoL. METHODS: 63 participants with AN completed measures of a generic HRQoL (SF-12), disease-specific HRQoL (Eating Disorders Quality of Life Questionnaire; EDQOL), functional impairment (days out of role; DOR; Work and Social Adjustment Scale; WSAS), and eating disorder severity (Eating Diso

Malaise with praise: A narrative review of 10 years of research on the concept of Fear of Positive Evaluation in social anxiety.

Social anxiety is characterized by a fear of being negatively evaluated by others (i.e., Fear of Negative Evaluation [FNE]). In 2008, Weeks, Heimberg, and Rodebaugh proposed Fear of Positive Evaluation (FPE) as a second cognitive component in social anxiety. The article presents an overview of FPE, its psycho-evolutionary theoretical foundation and assessment by the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale as well as relevant psychometric research on demographic characteristics. The relationship of FPE with a wide range of established dimensions from clinical, personality, and social psychology (i.e.

How and by whom are multiple language-related issues managed in transnational qualitative research using content analysis? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Multilingual, transnational qualitative research is increasingly common across the health and social sciences. However, it presents significant methodological challenges related to translation, validity and data interpretation, which remain insufficiently explored in the literature. Although some recommendations exist regarding research protocol translation, the role of interpreters and the timing of translation, no comprehensive approaches have been established to guide consistent language management across all phases of the research. OBJECTIVE: To map the strategies researchers
