Epidemic visceral leishmaniasis in Sudan: a randomized trial of aminosidine plus sodium stibogluconate versus sodium stibogluconate alone.

In a comparative trial of treatment in southern Sudan, visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed by the following symptoms: fever for > 1 month, splenomegaly, and antileishmanial direct agglutination test (DAT) titer of > or = 1:25,600. Patients (200) were randomized to receive sodium stibogluconate (Sbv) at 20 mg/kg/day for 30 days (groups S, n = 99) or Sbv at 20 mg/kg/day plus aminosidine at 15 mg/kg/day for 17 days (group AS, n = 101). Of 192 patients who had spleens or lymph nodes aspirated at entry, 134 (70%) were positive for parasites. During treatment, 7% in group S and 4% in group AS died.

Otospongiosis and sodium fluoride. A clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study on sodium fluoride treatment in otospongiosis.

The effect of sodium fluoride treatment in patients with otospongiosis has been evaluated in a prospective clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 95 patients. The results showed a statistically significant greater deterioration of hearing loss in the placebo group than in the group actively treated with 40 mg of sodium fluoride daily. These results support the view that sodium fluoride can change otospongiotic, active lesions to more dense, inactive otosclerotic lesions.

Effects of cyanide antidotes used with sodium nitroprusside infusions: sodium thiosulphate and hydroxocobalamin given prophylactically to dogs.

Cyanide antidotes were given to dogs before an infusion of sodium nitroprusside 1.5 mg kg-1 for 1 h. Dogs given thiosulphate 75 mg kg-1 had significantly lower plasma and red cell cyanide concentrations while plasma thiocyanate concentrations were significantly increased in comparison with control. These changes were associated with only minimal disturbance of tissue oxygenation. There was no effect on red cell cyanide or thiocyanate concentrations in dogs treated with hydroxocobalamin 1.5 mg kg-1, but plasma cyanide concentrations were significantly greater than in those receiving no antidote

Dose-response relation of CSF sodium and renal sodium excretion, and its absence in homozygous Brattleboro rats.

Constant intraventricular infusion (3.3--6.6 microliters/min) of artificial cerebrospinal fluid with sodium concentrations of 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 mM produced a linear dose-related change in renal sodium excretion in conscious, unrestrained Sprague-Dawley rats. The periventricular receptors stimulated were able to evoke substantial changes in body sodium balance; the 350 mM Na CSF produced an estimated 14% deficit in the content of Na in the extracellular fluid over a 5-hour infusion period. This is the first demonstration of such a dose-response relation over a wide range of CSF N

Comparison of the Effects of Sodium Orthovanadate and Sodium Metavanadate on the Growth and Survival of DU-145 Prostate Cancer Cells.

Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies in developed countries. Although new anticancer agents are being evaluated in models of this cancer, there is a scarcity of studies on the effects of sodium metavanadate (NaVO3). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium metavanadate on the growth, viability, and survival of prostate cancer cells and to compare these results with those for sodium orthovanadate (Na3VO4). The experiments were conducted on DU-145 cells incubated with either sodium metavanadate or sodium orthovanadate. The impact of these van

Sodium reduction is the key ingredient in dietary treatment of hypertension - a randomized controlled trial on sodium, potassium and nitrate.

Dietary interventions are recommended as part of hypertension (HTN) treatment. Sodium reduction has proven effective, however supplements of potassium and/or nitrate are likely also of importance. We aimed to test how these three dietary components affect blood pressure (BP) individually and in combination in patients with HTN. A double-blind randomized controlled trial of 90 participants with HTN was conducted. Participants were randomized to eight groups receiving a hand-out diet and different combinations of supplementation of sodium chloride (130 mmol/day), potassium chloride (40 mmol/day)

Urinary sodium/creatinine ratio is a predictor for fractional sodium excretion and related to age in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Electrolyte disturbances are common in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Current guidelines on monitoring sodium status are based on research in a small group of infants and require blood sampling. The aim of this study was to evaluate urinary salt parameters as a surrogate for sodium-status in different age-groups. Blood and urine samples for electrolytes were collected from 222 patients followed at the Ghent University Hospital CF-center. Fractional sodium excretion (FENa) and several urinary parameters were calculated. Clinical characteristics did not differ according to sodium status, de

Correction for the adverse influence of sodium-potassium cotransport on apparent sodium-lithium countertransport activity in human erythrocytes.

INTRODUCTION: Erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransporter (SLC) has traditionally been characterised as the sodium-stimulated lithium efflux from lithium-loaded erythrocytes. Concurrent activity of the sodium-potassium cotransporter (NKCC) can be expected to lead to imprecise estimates of the activity of the SLC. In the present study, we have characterised this methodological problem and have shown that it can be corrected with the inclusion of bumetanide in the physiological salt solution. METHODS: Lithium efflux was studied in lithium-loaded erythrocytes from 35 healthy, normotensive subj

Sodium excretion in relation to sodium intake and aldosterone excretion in newborn pre-term and full-term infants.

The importance of aldosterone for the control of salt balance has been examined in pre-term infants (gestational age 28--34 weeks) and in full-term infants. The post-natal age has varied from 2--21 days. Eight-hour urinary specimens have been analysed with regard to sodium, potassium and aldosterone. The daily sodium intake has been recorded following determination of milk intake and analyses of sodium in breast milk. Due to variations of sodium content of breast milk, the daily sodium intake in pre-term infants was lower than in full-term infants during the first 10 days of life. The sodium e

Research Note: Evaluation of dietary administration of sodium chlorate and sodium nitrate for Histomonas meleagridis prophylaxis in turkeys.

Histomoniasis is currently a re-emerging disease of major significance for many commercial turkey and broiler breeder production companies because of the unavailability of drugs or vaccines. The protozoa Histomonas meleagridis (HM) requires the presence of enteric microflora to promote the disease. The objectives of this research note were to evaluate the effect of dietary administration of sodium chlorate (SC) and sodium nitrate (SN) in vitro and in vivo for HM prophylaxis in poults. A total of 128 day-of-hatch female poults obtained from a commercial hatchery were wing-tagged and randomly as
