Simulation of finite deformation failure in soft biological tissues by a mixed local and nonlocal gradient damage approach.

This study introduces an anisotropic energy limiter-based gradient damage framework designed to predict the failure of soft biological tissues under finite deformations. Traditional damage models often struggle with these materials due to their complex, anisotropic microstructures and highly nonlinear behavior. The proposed framework addresses these challenges by incorporating an anisotropic energy limiter function to control local damage evolution and a gradient-enhanced formulation that ensures mesh-independent results through a rate-dependent damage evolution law that accounts for the loadi

Point of Care Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Necrotizing Fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe, life-threatening soft tissue infection requiring prompt diagnosis and immediate surgical debridement. Imaging, including a computed tomography (CT) scan, can often aid in the diagnosis, though it can prolong time to treatment and diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is often used in the ED to identify soft tissue infections. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of POCUS to identify NF in patients presenting to the emergency department. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients who presented to the emergency department

Orbital volume measurements in enophthalmos using three-dimensional CT imaging.

The purpose of this study was to investigate enophthalmos by measuring the volume of various orbital structures using off-line computer techniques on images generated by a CT scanner. Eleven patients with enophthalmos had CT scans of the orbits consisting of 30 to 40 adjacent 1.5-mm slices. The data from the scans were analyzed on a Nova 830 stand-alone computer system using software programs that allowed measurement of total bony orbital volume, total soft-tissue volume, globe volume, orbital fat volume, neuromuscular tissue volume, and apex-to-globe distance in the horizontal plane. These da

Paratesticular Liposarcoma Masquerading as an Inguinal Hernia.

A man with left scrotal swelling felt to represent inguinal hernia underwent computed tomography scan for reported bleeding after prostate biopsy. Computed tomography scan revealed a 15-cm extratesticular left scrotal mass containing both fat and soft tissue components, raising concern for dedifferentiated liposarcoma. At surgery and pathology, the mass was separate from the left testis, epididymis, and spermatic cord. Histopathologic findings were consistent with paratesticular dedifferentiated liposarcoma.

Large Osseous Choristoma of the Tongue Base: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Osseous choristoma is a rare benign lesion composed of mature bone in an ectopic soft-tissue site, most often the posterior tongue. We report a 9-year-old girl with a 1-year history of a slowly enlarging tongue-base lesion causing dysphagia and snoring during sleep. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a well-circumscribed, homogeneous bony-density lesion measuring 4.0 × 3.8 × 4.1 cm without enhancement or adjacent soft-tissue invasion. The lesion was completely excised through a dorsal tongue approach. Histopathological examination demonstrated mature osseous tissue with bony trabecul

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system. Part 8. The spine, section 2.

Magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionized the noninvasive evaluation of degenerative disc disease and its complications. Compared with computed tomography and computed tomographic myelography, magnetic resonance allows specific determination of the nature of disc protrusions and other degenerative related soft tissues about the spine. Magnetic resonance offers the most complete evaluation of specific degenerative disorders including degenerative facet disease, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, spontaneous lumbar epidural hematomas, and juvenile discogenic disease.

Preserving Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Health: A Case Report on Immediate Implant Placement Using the Socket Shield Technique.

Alveolar bone resorption is a natural occurrence following tooth extraction, complicating the process of prosthetic rehabilitation with implants. Techniques such as socket preservation, atraumatic extraction, and immediate implant placement are employed to reduce the dimensional changes associated with extraction. The socket shield technique (SST) is effective in preserving the alveolar ridge's contour, enhancing the aesthetic results of rehabilitation by maintaining the integrity of the bundle bone complex even when the buccal bone is less than 1mm.  This case report presents a 23-year-old fe

Facial soft tissue depths in French adults: variability, specificity and estimation.

Facial soft tissue depths (FSTD) are used in facial approximation to render the shape of the face, and are traditionally published specifically to population, corpulence, and sex amongst other factors. This paper investigates the variability of FSTD collected at 37 landmarks on 500 CT (computed tomography) scans of French living individuals. The specificity of the sample is evaluated by comparing values with six published datasets of various populations and recording techniques. Apart from a significant influence of the corpulence, FSTD show negligible variations with age and sex. The differen

Paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx CT and MRI.

Neoplastic disease of the nose, paranasal sinuses, the nasopharynx and the parapharyngeal space requires thorough assessment of location and extent in order to plan appropriate treatment. CT allows the deep soft tissue planes to be evaluated and provides a complement to the physical examination. It is especially helpful in regions involving thin bony structures (paranasal sinuses, orbita); here CT performs better than MRI. MRI possesses many advantages over other imaging modalities caused by its excellent tissue contrast. In evaluating regions involving predominantly soft tissue structures (ec

Computer modeling to predict effects of implant malpositioning during TKA.

Computer-assisted surgery has focused on alignment of implants and soft tissue balancing but the end results during surgery as they pertain to long-term function of the implants are not yet realized. One parameter that continues to be variable despite the use of computer navigation is the placement of the implants in the transverse plane. The objective of this study was to determine whether implant and anatomic registrations could be used in a computer model (LifeMOD/KneeSIM, LifeModeler, Inc., San Clemente, California) to show differences in the resulting contact patterns of the medial and la

Radiographic and computed tomographic characteristics of intraluminal tracheal adenoma in a cat.

A 13-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented with dyspnea and nasal discharge. Thoracic radiography revealed a dome-shaped soft-tissue opacity in the carina. Computed tomography confirmed a soft tissue-attenuating mass in the carina and the left and right proximal main bronchi that appeared to arise from the tracheal wall. Tracheoscopy revealed an intraluminal broad-based mass with multilobulated borders at the same location. Histopathological evaluation revealed a benign neoplastic process of the glandular epithelial lineage, which was considered an adenoma. Tracheal adenomas should be i

Improvement of a compressed inferior vena cava due to IgG4-related retroperitoneal fibrosis with steroid therapy.

A 79-year-old man had a 3.5-year history of edema of the lower extremities of unknown etiology. Abdominal computed tomography showed a soft tissue mass around the abdominal aorta, and the biopsy revealed dense fibrosis with abundant infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells. His serum IgG4 level was increased to 188 mg/dL. His lower extremity edema was induced by stenosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC) due to the mass. With a diagnosis of IgG4-related retroperitoneal fibrosis, he was treated with steroid, and the leg edema decreased with improvement of patency of the IVC and reduction of the

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa--oral rehabilitation using stereolithography and immediate endosseous implants.

Dental management of patients with epi-dermolysis bullosa (EB) is challenging because of the severe soft tissue lesions associated with this disease. A case history is presented where two immediate endosseous implants were placed in the mandible of a patient with recessive dystrophic EB using computer-aided technology to plan the surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation. After a 24-month follow-up, the prosthesis was stable with healthy asymptomatic soft tissue around the implants. The stereolithographic model provides a precise and noninvasive copy of the mandibular and maxillary arches of patie
