Elevated CO2 enhances Pb availability and desorption kinetics at the root-soil interface: Role of dissolved organic matter in soil solution.

Understanding the ecological forces driving lead (Pb) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in plant‒soil ecosystems under elevated CO2 (eCO2) is essential for optimizing phytoremediation strategies and predicting Pb cycling dynamics. This study systematically investigated Pb availability and desorption kinetics in a root-soil ecosystem with the metal-tolerant plant Trifolium repens L., using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGTs), fluorescence spectroscopy, and kinetic modelling. Our results show that eCO2 increased free Pb2+(aq) concentrations by 217.6-416.0 %, while concurrently r…

The effect of biochar-amended biogas digestate on soil nitrous oxide emissions of long-term reduced tillage under varying soil moisture.

The elevated emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) after fertilization with biogas digestate pose a challenge to sustainable nutrient recycling in agriculture. In recent years, the addition of biochar and reduced tillage were considered important methods for sustainable soil management and have been extensively studied. However, their effect on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is still being debated, and the mechanisms are not adequately understood. This study explores how two sustainable farming practices - reduced tillage (RT) legacy and biochar amendment - affect N2O emissions from digestate-fertil…

Addressing dye phytotoxicity and soil contamination: The dual action of chemically synthesized zinc nanoparticles in simultaneous adsorption and soil health improvement.

Dyes are synthetic organic compounds that induce the development of color in the substances. A large volume of dye effluent is released every year and hence, contaminates water and agricultural land. Nanoparticles are efficient adsorbents of pollutants, however, their potential for remediation of dyes in water and soil is not well studied. Therefore, this study evaluates the efficacy of seed dressing with chemically synthesized zinc nanoparticles for simultaneously reaching dye adsorption and alleviation of dye-induced phytotoxicity in mung bean plants, cultivated in dye-contaminated soil. Zin…

Key soil physicochemical properties affecting the dechlorination activity of sulfurized zero-valent iron: Different roles of soil particles and soluble components.

Sulfurized zero-valent iron (SZVI) is a promising material for controlling soil/groundwater halogenated hydrocarbon pollution. However, systematic studies on how various physicochemical properties of soil affect SZVI dechlorination activity are still lacking. To explore the influence of solid and soluble components on SZVI activity, this study compared the dechlorination performance of SZVI on trichloroethylene (TCE) in three different soils across five systems: SZVIwater (aqueous solution system), SZVIsoil (soil system), SZVIpre-soil (pre-adsorbed TCE soil system), SZVIex (soil extract system…

Recycling of Industrial Waste as Soil Binding Additives-Effects on Soil Mechanical and Hydraulic Properties during Its Stabilisation before Road Construction.

To improve the in situ soil stabilization, different chemical additives are used (ion exchange compounds, additives based on H2SO4 or vinyl polymers, and organic additives using lignosulfonates). One interesting alternative is the production of additives from various waste materials. The extensive testing of waste-based blends with soil was performed; the mechanical (unconfined compressive strength (UCS)) and hydraulic (capillary rise, water absorption, and frost resistance (FR)) soil properties were measured. The optimization process led to obtaining additive compositions ensuring high streng…

Exploring the potential of Canavalia ensiformis for phytoremediation of B10 biodiesel-contaminated soil: insights on aromatic compound degradation and soil fertility.

The widespread use of petroleum-based fuels poses a significant environmental problem due to the risks associated with accidental spills. Among the treatments available, phytoremediation is increasingly accepted as an effective and low-cost solution. This study aimed to evaluate the degradation of the aromatic fraction of biodiesel B10 and the soil fertility analysis in artificially contaminated soils treated with phytoremediation. The experimental design consisted of a 3x3 factorial, with three types of soil treatment: control, autoclaved, and planted with C. ensiformis L, and three levels of…

Soil Humic Acid Stimulates Potentially Active Dissimilatory Arsenate-Reducing Bacteria in Flooded Paddy Soil as Revealed by Metagenomic Stable Isotope Probing.

Dissimilatory arsenate reduction contributes a large proportion of arsenic flux from flooded paddy soil, which is closely linked to soil organic carbon input and efflux. Humic acid (HA) represents a natural ingredient in soil and is shown to enhance microbial arsenate respiration to promote arsenic mobility. However, the community and function profiles of metabolically active arsenate-respiring bacteria and their interactions with HA in paddy soil remain unclear. To probe this linkage, we performed a genome-centric comparison of potentially active arsenate-respiring bacteria in anaerobic micro…

Soil Microbial Legacy Overrides the Responses of a Dominant Grass and Nitrogen-Cycling Functional Microbes in Grassland Soil to Nitrogen Addition.

Both atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and soil microbial legacy (SML) can affect plant performance, the activity of soil N-cycling functional microbes and the relative abundance of N-cycling functional genes (NCFGs). In the grassland vegetation successional process, how the interaction of SML and N deposition affects the performance of dominant grass and NCFGs remains unclear. Therefore, we planted Leymus chinensis, a dominant grass in the Songnen grassland, in the soil taken from the early, medium, late, and stable successional stages. We subjected the plants to soil sterilization and N ad…

Long-Term Organic Fertilization Drives Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation in Black Soil Through Microbial Necromass Carbon and CAZyme-Mediated Carbon Turnover.

Long-term organic inputs increase soil organic carbon (SOC) in black soil; however, it remains uncertain if straw and manure enhance SOC via separate microbial necromass carbon (MNC) routes. Therefore, a 12-year field experiment was conducted to explore this mechanism. Treatments included inorganic fertilizer, partial substitution of inorganic fertilizer with straw, and partial substitution of inorganic fertilizer with manure, along with a no-fertilizer control. According to the results, compared with inorganic fertilizer alone, treatments involving both organic manure and straw returned marke…

Remediation of heavy metal-polluted alkaline vegetable soil using mercapto-grafted palygorskite: effects of field-scale application and soil environmental quality.

Remediation materials are the most critical factors for in situ immobilization of soil contaminated by heavy metals. In this study, in order to improve the performance of palygorskite (Pal), a new remediation material, mercapto-grafted palygorskite (MPal) was synthesized by grafting mercapto groups onto the surface of Pal. The results of field application in northern China showed that at a dosage of 0.12-0.23 kg m-2, MPal significantly reduced the available concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Cr in the soil by 52.2%, 29.9%, and 46.2%, respectively. Concurrently, Cd, Pb, and Cr concentrations in the …
