The Somatosensory Mismatch Negativity.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a well-established neural signature of automatic change detection in the auditory modality. Growing evidence suggests that analogous responses exist in other sensory domains, including somatosensation. This review provides an initial overview of the somatosensory MMN (sMMN), summarizing findings from both human and animal research concerning its underlying neural mechanisms and functional significance as a predictive error signal. We discuss electrophysiological and neuroimaging evidence identifying primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (S1 and S2) as key ge

Real-time monitoring and regulating auditory cortex alpha activity in patients with chronic tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Low levels of alpha activity (8-13Hz) mirror a state of enhanced responsiveness, whereas high levels of alpha are a state of reduced responsiveness. Tinnitus is accompanied by reduction of alpha activity in the perisylvian regions compared to normal hearing controls. This reduction might be a key mechanism in the chain of reactions leading to tinnitus. We devised a novel spatial filter as an on-line source monitoring method, which can be used to control alpha activity in the primary auditory cortex. In addition, we designed an innovative experimental procedure to enable suppression

Sexually selected size differences and conserved sexual monomorphism of genital cortex.

The mammalian somatosensory cortex shows marked species-specific differences. How evolution in general and sexual selection in particular shape the somatosensory cortical body representation has not been delineated, however. Here we address this issue by a comparative analysis of genital cortex. Genitals are unique body parts in that they show sexual dimorphism, major changes in puberty and typically more pronounced species differences than other body parts (Hosken & Stockley, 2004). To study the evolution of genital cortex we flattened cortical hemispheres and assembled 104 complete body maps…

The Nature of the Sensory Input to the Neonatal Rat Barrel Cortex.

UNLABELLED: Sensory input plays critical roles in the development of the somatosensory cortex during the neonatal period. This early sensory input may involve: (1) stimulation arising from passive interactions with the mother and littermates and (2) sensory feedback arising from spontaneous infant movements. The relative contributions of these mechanisms under natural conditions remain largely unknown, however. Here, we show that, in the whisker-related barrel cortex of neonatal rats, spontaneous whisker movements and passive stimulation by the littermates cooperate, with comparable efficiency…

Cortical activity emerges in region-specific patterns during early brain development.

The development of precise neural circuits in the brain requires spontaneous patterns of neural activity prior to functional maturation. In the rodent cerebral cortex, patchwork and wave patterns of activity develop in somatosensory and visual regions, respectively, and are present at birth. However, whether such activity patterns occur in noneutherian mammals, as well as when and how they arise during development, remain open questions relevant for understanding brain formation in health and disease. Since the onset of patterned cortical activity is challenging to study prenatally in eutheria

A morphological analysis of thalamocortical axon fibers of rat posterior thalamic nuclei: a single neuron tracing study with viral vectors.

The rostral sector of the posterior thalamic nuclei (POm) is, together with the ventral posterior nuclei (VP), involved in somatosensory information processing in rodents. The POm receives inputs from the spinal cord and trigeminal nuclei and projects to the primary somatosensory (S1) cortex and other cortical areas. Although thalamocortical axons of single VP neurons are well known to innervate layer (L) 4 of the S1 cortex with distinct columnar organization, those of POm neurons have not been elucidated yet. In the present study, we investigated complete axonal and dendritic arborizations of

Maintenance of a somatotopic cortical map in the face of diminishing thalamocortical inputs.

This study addresses the extent of divergence in the ascending somatosensory pathways of primates. Divergence of inputs from a particular body part at each successive synaptic step in these pathways results in a potential magnification of the representation of that body part in the somatosensory cortex, so that the representation can be expanded when peripheral input from other parts is lost, as in nerve lesions or amputations. Lesions of increasing size were placed in the representation of a finger in the ventral posterior thalamic nucleus (VPL) of macaque monkeys. After a survival period of …

[A case of cortical reflex myoclonus manifesting tremor].

A 58-year-old woman developed slowly progressive tremulous myoclonus provoked mainly by action and posture. She had neither seizure nor dementia. No one in her family had similar symptoms. The presence of giant somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) with enhanced long loop reflex and premovement cortical spikes demonstrated by the jerk-locked averaging method suggest that the involuntary movement is cortical reflex myoclonus. Magnetoencephalogram revealed that the generator sources of giant SEPs were the post-central somatosensory cortex and probably also the pre-central motor cortex. Symptoms …

The emergence of somatotopic maps of the body in S1 in rats: the correspondence between functional and anatomical organization.

Most of what we know about cortical map development and plasticity comes from studies in mice and rats, and for the somatosensory cortex, almost exclusively from the whisker-dominated posteromedial barrel fields. Whiskers are the main effector organs of mice and rats, and their representation in cortex and subcortical pathways is a highly derived feature of murine rodents. This specialized anatomical organization may therefore not be representative of somatosensory cortex in general, especially for species that utilize other body parts as their main effector organs, like the hands of primates.…

Intra-somatosensory cortical circuits mediating pain-induced analgesia.

Pain in one part of the body profoundly diminishes the sensation of pain in other parts of the body in humans. Here, we found that pain-related behaviors in hindpaw are inhibited by noxious stimuli from diverse body regions in mice. Using activity-dependent cell labeling in male FosTRAP2 mice, we captured a neuronal ensemble in the layers 2-4 of secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) that was activated during pain at diverse body regions induced analgesia. Single-cell projection analysis showed that these S2 neurons receive projections from the contralateral S2 and specifically innervate the laye…

Neurophysiology of movement disorders.

The relation of the cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia and their participation in movement disorders is presented. Studies have shown that lesions to the cortex will produce contralateral paralysis while damage to the basal ganglia or cerebellum will result in movement abnormalities. These data provide support for the view that subcortical but not cortical structures initiate the control movement activity. It would appear that the basal ganglia and cerebellum receive signals from the auditory, visual, and somatosensory cortex integrate this information, and relay signals back to the motor c…

Intracortical connections are altered after long-standing deprivation of dorsal column inputs in the hand region of area 3b in squirrel monkeys.

A complete unilateral lesion of the dorsal column somatosensory pathway in the upper cervical spinal cord deactivates neurons in the hand region in contralateral somatosensory cortex (areas 3b and 1). Over weeks to months of recovery, parts of the hand region become reactivated by touch on the hand or face. To determine whether changes in cortical connections potentially contribute to this reactivation, we injected tracers into electrophysiologically identified locations in cortex of area 3b representing the reactivated hand and normally activated face in adult squirrel monkeys. Our results in…

Temporal analysis of the flow from V1 to the extrastriate cortex in humans.

We previously examined the cortical processing in response to somatosensory, auditory and noxious stimuli, using magnetoencephalography in humans. Here, we performed a similar analysis of the processing in the human visual cortex for comparative purposes. After flash stimuli applied to the right eye, activations were found in eight cortical areas: the left medial occipital area around the calcarine fissure (primary visual cortex, V1), the left dorsomedial area around the parietooccipital sulcus (DM), the ventral (MOv) and dorsal (MOd) parts of the middle occipital area of bilateral hemispheres

Auditory resting-state functional connectivity in tinnitus and modulation with transcranial direct current stimulation.

CONCLUSIONS: The functional connectivity (FC) between the right and left auditory cortex is weak in tinnitus patients. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the auditory cortex has potential as a tool to modulate auditory-based FC. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of applying tDCS in tinnitus patients, and searched for modulation of brain networks in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) through an analysis of FC with the stimulated brain region. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Nine male patients with chronic tinnitus and 10 male volunteers with norm

Differential grey matter changes in sensorimotor cortex related to exceptional fine motor skills.

Does dendritic growth underly recovery from neonatal occipital lesions in rats.

Rats were given lesions of visual cortex on postnatal day 4 or 10, or in adulthood. Ninety days later they were trained on a horizontal-vertical stripes discrimination task and a visual-spatial navigation task. None of the operated rats acquired the tasks. The brains were processed for Golgi-Cox staining and dendritic arborization was quantified in the layer III pyramidal cells in somatosensory cortex. Relative to normal control brains, the neurons of the day 4 and adult operates showed a reduction in dendritic branching, whereas the neurons of the day 10 operates had a significant increase in…

Somatosensory Event-related Potentials from Orofacial Skin Stretch Stimulation.

Cortical processing associated with orofacial somatosensory function in speech has received limited experimental attention due to the difficulty of providing precise and controlled stimulation. This article introduces a technique for recording somatosensory event-related potentials (ERP) that uses a novel mechanical stimulation method involving skin deformation using a robotic device. Controlled deformation of the facial skin is used to modulate kinesthetic inputs through excitation of cutaneous mechanoreceptors. By combining somatosensory stimulation with electroencephalographic recording, so
