Several deaths were reported when total parenteral nutrition came into use in the early seventies. These deaths resulted from overzealous total parenteral nutrition leading to what was termed the refeeding syndrome. Actually, this syndrome had been reported years earlier, especially at the end of the second world war. The refeeding syndrome includes hypophosphatemia, water and electrolyte overload, hypertonic states, vitamin deficiencies and neurological disorders. Malnourished patients on enteral and/or parenteral nutrition are exposed to specific complications linked to artificial nutrition.

We describe an 8 year-old girl with established diabetes insipidus who developed cyclophosphamide-associated antidiuresis. The patient had received cyclophosphamide as part of a high-dose chemotherapy regimen for recurrent suprasellar dysgerminoma prior to autologous bone marrow transplantation. Infective complications are analysed in 100 transplanted patients all receiving corticosteroid and azathioprine. 170 infective episodes were noted, only 13 patients never had infection during the period of observation. Two complications were dominated by their gravity : pneumopathies (n equals 29) fatal in 20.6% of cases, and septicemia (n equals 21) fatal in 28.5% of cases.
