Two hundred and twenty-five hair samples (150 Chinese, 44 Malays and 31 Indians) from healthy residents not occupationally exposed to mercury were analyzed by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine their total, inorganic and organic mercury levels. Four cases of scalp paraffinoma were seen in our clinics within the past year. This unusual condition results from intradermal injection of substances containing paraffin. The LiNbO3 crystals doped with Cr3+ ion (Cr:LN) and co-doped with Cr3+ and Zn ions (Zn:Cr:LN) were grown by the Bridgman method. The absorption coefficient and concentration of Cr3+ in crystals were measured by UV/Visible spectra and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry, respectively. The effective distribution coefficients (k) of Cr3+ in the crystals were calculated. Glucose oxidase was entrapped in small unilamellar vesicles composed of phosphatidylcholine, dicetyl phosphate and cholesterol. Prediction of the enzyme content of liposomes by calculations based on input concentrations of lipid and protein, dimensions of the lipids and the liposomes yielded one protein per vesicle. The nanodrop spectrophotometric (NDS) determination of iron (III) in water samples has been established. The proposed method is simple, selective and highly sensitive. The extraction of Fe (III)-thiocyanate complex was done by novel organic reagents such as N-phenylacetamide, N-alkylacetamide, (alkyl=butyl, hexyl and octyl group) in chloroform. The Fe (III) extract was examined in the strong acidic (HCl+H2SO4) solution. The effect of solvent polarizability and multipole effects on the amide I vibrational spectra of a peptide unit is investigated. Four molecular dynamics force fields of increasing complexity for the solvent are used to model both the linear absorption and two-dimensional infrared spectra.
