Medial olivocochlear function in children with poor speech-in-noise performance and language disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Contralateral masking of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions is a phenomenon that suggests an inhibitory effect of the olivocochlear efferent auditory pathway. Many studies have been inconclusive in demonstrating a clear connection between this system and a behavioral speech-in-noise listening skill. The purpose of this study was to investigate the activation of a medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent in children with poor speech-in-noise (PSIN) performance and children with language impairment and PSIN (SLI + PSIN). METHODS: Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) with a

Gender typicality in children's speech: A comparison of boys with and without gender identity disorder.

This study examined whether boys with gender identity disorder (GID) produced less prototypically male speech than control boys without GID, a possibility that has been suggested by clinical observations. Two groups of listeners participated in tasks where they rated the gender typicality of single words (group 1) or sentences (group 2) produced by 15 5-13 year old boys with GID and 15 age-matched boys without GID. Detailed acoustic analyses of the stimuli were also conducted. Boys with GID were rated as less boy-like than boys without GID. In the experiment using sentence stimuli, these group

The relationship of bottle feeding and other sucking behaviors with speech disorder in Patagonian preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that children's nonnutritive sucking habits may lead to delayed development of their oral anatomy and functioning. However, these findings were inconsistent. We investigated associations between use of bottles, pacifiers, and other sucking behaviors with speech disorders in children attending three preschools in Punta Arenas (Patagonia), Chile. METHODS: Information on infant feeding and sucking behaviors, age starting and stopping breast- and bottle-feeding, pacifier use, and other sucking behaviors, was collected from self-administered questionnaires c…

Evaluation of neuromotor deficits in children with autism and children with a specific speech and language disorder.

Several studies have described problems in motor functions in children with autism and children with a specific speech and language disorder. The purpose of this study was to identify neuromotor deficits in these neurodevelopmentally impaired children. A standardised neurological examination was performed in 11 children with childhood autism, 11 children with an expressive language disorder, 11 children with a receptive language disorder and 11 control children. The children were matched for age and non-verbal IQ, not for gender. All children had a non-verbal IQ above 85. The neurological exam

Stimulability considerations in the phonological treatment of a child with a persistent disorder of speech-sound production.

The term "persistent sound system disorder" has been used to describe the speech problems of a relatively small group of children that does not respond readily to treatment. This group includes children who have been given diagnoses such as development apraxia of speech. In this article, a rationale is developed for one approach to the treatment of persistent sound system disorder. This approach, which involves broadening of the phonetic inventory early in the treatment process, is contrasted with more traditional motor-programming treatments that emphasize stabilization of a restricted set of

Comparing vowel intelligibility across interactive and non-interactive tasks in disordered speech.

The current study examines vowel intelligibility across interactive and non-interactive situations for individuals with dysarthria secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PALS). The vowel space of these speakers is often characterized by centralization and lowering, negatively affecting intelligibility. In two experiments, listeners identified vowels produced by PALS in habitual speech (non-interactive), clear speech (non-interactive), and interactive matching. Clear speech and interactive matching elicited more intelligible vowels than habitual speech. Interactive matching productions wer

[Features of post-stroke speech disorders and the prospects of mirror therapy in the recovery of patients].

The review describes the features of post-stroke speech disorders, including epidemiological data on their prevalence, spectrum, and characteristics of their various types. The prospects of using mirror therapy for stroke patients as an affordable, simple, safe, inexpensive method are discussed, which is a relatively new direction in the treatment of aphasia. Also, the literature review focuses on various mechanisms underlying a positive therapeutic effect, including the activation of mirror neurons during the performance of specific actions or the observation of hand and facial movements, and…

Audiovisual speech perception deficits in unaffected siblings of children with developmental language disorder.

Siblings of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often have weaker language skills compared to peers with typical development (TD). However, whether their language-relevant audiovisual skills are also atypical is unknown. Study 1 examined whether siblings use information about a talker's mouth shape during phonemic processing as children with TD do. Study 2 examined siblings' ability to match auditory words with observed word articulations. Only children with TD showed a significant MMN to audiovisual phonemic violations, suggesting that, just like in children with DLD, lip shap

Singing Without Speaking: A Unique Case of Psychogenic Speech and Voice Disorder in an Adolescent.

Psychogenic voice disorder, often a manifestation of conversion disorder, is characterized by a sudden impairment of voice following a stressful event or other psychological cause. This case report presents a patient with a psychogenic voice disorder featuring the atypical ability to sing despite losing conversational voice. Few case reports exist on psychogenic speech and voice disorders, and no cases in the current literature examine the loss of conversational voice with preservation of singing voice. In this case, the patient experienced sudden onset stuttering which progressed to complete

Remote Microphones Support Speech Recognition in Noise and Reverberation for Children With a Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with typical hearing and various language and cognitive challenges can struggle with processing speech in background noise. Thus, children with a language disorder (LD) are at risk for difficulty with speech recognition in poorer acoustic environments. METHOD: The current study compared the effects of background speech-shaped noise (SSN) with and without reverberation on sentence recognition for children with LD (n = 9) and typical language development (TLD; n = 9). We also investigated whether the use of a remote microphone (RM) improved speech recognition for children with

Parental attitudes and experiences in pursuing genetic testing for their child's motor speech disorder.

Rare and typically severe motor speech disorders such as childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and dysarthria affect about 1 in 1000 children. The genetic basis of these speech disorders is well-documented, with approximately 30% of children who undergo genomic testing receiving an explanatory genetic diagnosis. As more children with speech disorders are offered genetic testing, understanding parental views and experiences around genetic testing for their child is critical in providing effective pre- and post-test genetic counselling. This research explored parental attitudes, experiences, and per…

Preliminary Study on Speech in Noise Training in Children with Sensory Processing Disorder and Hyperacusis.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an image guided percutaneous procedure using thermal energy that is used to treat malignant lesions in various organs including liver, breast and lungs. It has also been used bronchoscopically to treat endobronchial tumors. Current passing through tissue from the active electrode leads to ion agitation, which is converted by means of friction into heat leading to irreparable cellular damage and coagulation necrosis. The potential benefits include decreased cost and morbidity, treating patients who are not surgical candidates due to age, co-morbidity or extent o

Utilization of speech-language, occupational and physical therapy by diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although Medicaid coverage of treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is expanding, we know little about when children receive speech-language, occupational and/or physical therapy. The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between predisposing, enabling and need characteristics and utilization of speech-language, occupational and physical therapy by diagnosis of ASD. METHODS: We integrated administrative, Medicaid and Census data using a large sample of children with ASD who enrolled in a 1915(c) Home and Community Based Medicaid waiver in a

Auditory brainstem response to speech in children with high functional autism spectrum disorder.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) provides useful information about the auditory brainstem pathway. However, there is little known about the subcortical speech processing in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the subcortical speech processing in children with high functioning ASD. Twenty-eight children with ASD, with a mean age of 14.36 ± 1.86, and 28 typically developing (TD) children, with a mean age of 14.99 ± 1.92, were selected from Rofeydeh Rehabilitation Hospital (Tehran, Iran), and speech ABR (sABR) with a 40 ms synthetic /d

Speech perception in autism spectrum disorder: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often characterized by atypical language profiles and auditory and speech processing. These can contribute to aberrant language and social communication skills in ASD. The study of the neural basis of speech perception in ASD can serve as a potential neurobiological marker of ASD early on, but mixed results across studies renders it difficult to find a reliable neural characterization of speech processing in ASD. To this aim, the present study examined the functional neural basis of speech perception in ASD versus typical development (TD) using an activation l
