Personalized, performance-specific speech intervention in children with a cleft palate: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: The provision of speech intervention in children requires personalized, child-tailored approaches. Different speech-intervention approaches exist to eliminate cleft-related speech errors in children with a cleft palate. However, it is unclear what approach works best for the subtypes of cleft-related speech errors. AIMS: To describe a protocol for a systematic review that provides speech-language pathologists with the current literature concerning more individualized speech intervention in children with a cleft palate. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A systematic literature review was perf

Audiovisual materials are effective for enhancing the correction of articulation disorders in children with cleft palate.

INTRODUCTION: Children with cleft palate frequently show speech disorders known as compensatory articulation. Compensatory articulation requires a prolonged period of speech intervention that should include reinforcement at home. However, frequently relatives do not know how to work with their children at home. OBJECTIVE: To study whether the use of audiovisual materials especially designed for complementing speech pathology treatment in children with compensatory articulation can be effective for stimulating articulation practice at home and consequently enhancing speech normalization in chi

Oral electromyography activation patterns for speech are similar in preschoolers who do and do not stutter.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors determined whether basic patterns of muscle activation for speech were similar in preschool children who stutter and in their fluent peers. METHOD: Right and left lower lip muscle activity were recorded during conversational speech and sentence repetition in 64 preschool children diagnosed as stuttering (CWS) and in 40 children who do not stutter (CWNS). Measures of electromyography (EMG) amplitude, right-left asymmetry, and bilateral coordination were computed for fluent speech. The potential presence of tremor-like oscillations during disfluencies of CWS

G. Paul Moore Lecture: Unifying the disciplines of our voice smorgasbord.

A look at the many disciplines working with voice over the past 50 years is provided from the perspective of a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Some of the earliest collaborations between medicine and speech-language pathology were seen in the management of cleft palate and velopharyngeal inadequacy problems and observed, also, in laryngectomee rehabilitation. The earlier concern of the SLP for the emotional and psychological aspects of patients with voice disorders appeared replaced with the rise of symptomatic therapy. Dramatic improvement in instrumentation assisted by computer analyses i…

[Cerebellum and language: speech therapy intervention to treat their disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Advances in neuroimaging techniques have sparked a growing interest in the study of the cerebellum and its role in the cognitive processes. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a relationship between this organ and linguistic production, and between pathologies of the cerebellum and some language disorders, such as cerebellar dysarthria. AIMS: To review the contribution made by the cerebellum to the linguistic functions, to analyse the language disorders that derive from cerebellar diseases and to propose the use of speech therapy intervention in conditions of this ki

What Is in a Label? The Importance of Clinical Specificity and Challenges of Diagnostic Evolution in Progressive Speech-Language Disorders.

PURPOSE: This viewpoint addresses the complexity of the nomenclature of progressive speech-language disorders, which often exists at the intersection of descriptive symptoms, clinical syndromes, and underlying neuropathology. Using primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) as an example, we explore how overlapping diagnostic frameworks employed by speech-language pathologists, neurologists, and other clinicians and researchers can lead to different diagnostic labels that may evolve throughout disease progression. These discrepancies and changes can complicate patient understanding, clinica

Cerebral dominance for speech and handwriting of patients with cortical vascular malformations.

Lateralization of speech dominance was established using amobarbital for 22 patients with vascular malformations lateralized to the left cerebral hemisphere. Patients' histories were negative for clinically evident neurological events (e.g., seizures or hemorrhage) prior to adulthood. The vascular lesions were categorized as high flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) (n = 4), low flow AVMs (n = 6), cavernous hemangiomas (n = 10), or venous angiomas (n = 2) by reviewing angiographic findings and surgical pathology for those patients whose lesions were excised. Three of the malformations encro

Pathophysiological effects of Möbius syndrome on speech and hearing.

The effects of Möbius syndrome (MoS) on the functioning of the peripheral speech and hearing mechanisms has not hithertofore been described, to my knowledge. Speech and hearing function of an 8-year-old MoS speaker was studied. Data were obtained from several sources. These included: electromyography of the facial muscles, physical examination of the peripheral speech mechanism, speech and language test batteries, audiological evaluation, and acoustic analyses of the speech signal. A pathologic condition was found to exist in a number of cranial nerves and in structures in the oral cavity. Thi
