We report the synthesis and characterization of a homoleptic Ga4 radical anion ([Li+]•[1•-]), prepared via a salt-metathesis reaction between Cp*Ga (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) and [Li2(L)] (L = Me2Si(DipN)2). Combined structural and computational analyses reveal a nearly planar geometry at the central gallium atom, with only minimal distortion toward a trigonal pyramidal geometry, and the unpaired spin density localized in its 4p orbital. Phenyl N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) is commonly employed in spin-trapping studies. We report here evidence that PBN in aqueous solutions is decomposed by two pathways leading to the generation of nitric oxide (.NO). Finger nails are composed largely of alpha-keratin, a protein in which three right-handed alpha-helical peptide chains are twisted into a left-handed coil strengthened by disulphide cross links. We have found that the act of cutting nails generates trapped radicals, giving intense electron spin resonance (ESR) signals characteristic of sulphur centred radicals. The nature of the primary radical and the possible modes of generation are discussed. These radical reactions should be considered when using human nail parings to estimate accidental exposure to ionizing radiation.
