Thirty-four women using the stainless steel ring (SS), 43 women using the Copper T220 (TCu), and 19 women using levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices (LNG) were admitted to the study. Stapedectomy in Otosclerosis in using polyethylene struts or stainless-steel wire protheses results in permanent correction of the postoperative gap. The use of stainless-steel wire protheses however is successful with 94% of the patients regarding the postoperative gap, compared to 89% of the patients in using the polyethylene struts. The postoperative decrement of bone conduction is statistically significantly lower in the stainless-steel wire protheses than in polyethylene struts.

PURPOSE: We report our experience of resecting sternal tumors, followed by reconstruction of the skeletal and soft-tissue defects, and discuss the usefulness of sandwiched Marlex and stainless-steel mesh.
METHODS: Fifteen patients underwent resection of a sternal tumor and chest wall reconstruction with autologous bone grafts, sandwiched Marlex and stainless-steel mesh or a titanium plate, and musculocutaneous flaps. The sternal tumors were from locally recurrent breast carcinoma in ten patients, metastasis from other organs in three, and primary chondrosarcoma in two.

Titanium plates and screws have become widely used for the fixation of fractures and osteotomies. We began using them in 1992; however, several early hardware failure prompted a retrospective review of the occurrence of this complication. A 2-year time period was reviewed at two institutions with comparison of hardware failure rates using titanium and stainless steel implants.
