Phenotypic Detection of Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in Microorganisms Isolated From the Primary Molars of Pediatric Dental Patients Undergoing Pulp Therapy.

Background Pulp necrosis is a prevalent complication following dental caries in primary dentition. Certain bacteria exhibit increased adaptability to adverse conditions and possess virulence factors that enable more effective colonization of dental tissues. The invasion of the root canal system (RCS) by pathogenic microorganisms, compounded by the rising concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), emphasizes the necessity for a culture-driven and evidence-based approach to antibiotic selection in pediatric endodontics, wherein the therapeutic efficacy of root canal treatment is inherently depen

Failure on all fronts: general dental practitioners' views on promoting oral health in high caries risk children--a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite overall improvements in oral health, a large number of children in United Kingdom (UK) are affected by dental caries; and the implementation of oral health promotion in some families remains a challenge. As such, children from those families suffer high caries rates, and are frequently referred for tooth extraction under General Anaesthesia (GA), one of the commonest reasons for paediatric hospital admissions. The aim of this investigation is to explore referring primary care General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) views and experiences in trying to promote better oral health

A survey on orthodontic-restorative dental services in a NHS hospital.

The provision of a joint orthodontic-restorative hospital service is important in providing a quality service for some dental malocclusions. A prospective survey was carried out of the joint orthodontic-restorative clinic at Mayday University Hospital, during the months of January to August 2005. Data was collected using a data collection form. In total 61 patient's attended 4 joint clinics. Fifty per cent of referrals were by general dental practitioners. The commonest referral reasons were spacing and dental trauma. Over one third of patients were seen within 12 weeks of their referral, whil

Programmed cell death ligand 1(PD-L1) association in metastatic and non-metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma: clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is considered a highly immunosuppressive malignancy largely mediated by the Programmed Cell Death 1/Programmed Cell Death Ligand 1(PD-1/PD-L1) axis. The interaction between PD-L1 expressed on tumor cells and PD-1 receptors on T-cells results in T-cell dysfunction, exhaustion, and immune evasion within the tumor microenvironment. This study aimed to evaluate PD-L1 expression in primary non-metastatic OSCC, primary metastatic OSCC, and nodal metastatic OSCC, as well as to investigate its association with different available clinicopathological parameters. Immu

Periodontitis presenting among betel quid users: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Betel leaf chewing habit has been studied extensively, as it has been an ancient practice in many Asian countries. Although betel leaf has been reported to have potential beneficial properties, it has also been shown to have a strong association with oral diseases, including periodontitis. This case series addresses the presentation of periodontitis among betel quid users, to help clinicians identify and manage such patients when they are encountered in settings outside the countries and territories where betel quid use is common. METHODS: Four patients of Asian ethnicity were ref

Vasopressor administration during liver transplant surgery and its effect on endotracheal reintubation rate in the postoperative period: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: End-stage liver disease (ESLD) is associated with a low systemic vascular resistance due to peripheral vasodilatation. This phenomenon is aggravated by general anesthesia (GA) administered during liver transplantation, resulting in precipitous decreases in blood pressure. The excessive amounts (>3 mL/1 mL blood loss) of IV fluid administered to maintain hemodynamic stability during surgery promotes a fluid shift in the lung, which may lead to hypoxia in the immediate postoperative period. This pathophysiologic state may necessitate endotracheal reintubation and mechanical ventilati

Roles of dentistry in identifying and supporting individuals who have experienced gender-based violence: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant public health concern affecting one in three women globally. GBV is deeply rooted in gender inequality and societal constructs of gender roles, which significantly contribute to its prevalence and impact on women. Injury to the head, face, and neck, including broken teeth and jaws, is common in GBV, as is dental neglect, indicating a role for dental care. However, the impact of maxillofacial injuries or poor oral health and the role dental professionals may play in supporting individuals experiencing GBV are often overlooked. This review

Ultrastructural evaluation of adverse effects on dentine formation from systemic fluoride application in an experimental mouse model.

AIM: Fluoride is widely used in dentistry for its caries prevention. To reduce dental caries, the optimal fluoride concentration of public water supplies in the United States is 0.7 ppm. However, excessive systemic fluoride consumption can lead to dental/enamel fluorosis. Numerous studies have explored the effects of fluoride on enamel and enamel-forming cells. However, research on systemic fluoride's impact on dentine is limited, particularly the effect of fluoride on the structure of the dentine-pulp complex. Therefore, this study aimed to identify how excessive fluoride affects dentine micr

Diversity and critical forces in dental education.

Critical issues that affect dental education and the connection between science and practice include the community, managed patient care, public skepticism and fiscal support, and shifting demography in patterns of oral disease as well as the background of students entering the dental profession. During the past several decades, there have been major shifts in the patterns of oral disease, most recently described in results of the NHANES III dental survey. The diversity and background of students entering the dental profession have changed dramatically as well, and present estimates of change

Willingness of Adults in the United States to Receive HIV Testing in Dental Care Settings: Cross-Sectional Web-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV and 1 in 8 are estimated to be unaware of their serostatus. Little is known about whether individuals would consider being tested for HIV in nontraditional health care settings such as a dentist's office. Studies in selected US cities have indicated high acceptability of receiving an HIV test among people attending dental clinics. However, we are not aware of studies that have assessed willingness to receive HIV testing in dental care settings at a national leve

Exploratory investigation of patterns of forensic odontology interest.

BACKGROUND: Forensic Odontology (FO) plays a critical role in human identification and legal investigations, yet global public interest and popularity in the field vary significantly across countries. Socioeconomic conditions, educational infrastructure, and linguistic accessibility shape engagement with FO, which can be measured through online search behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess global trends in public interest in FO by analyzing multilingual Google Trends (GT) data from 54 countries over a 20-year period, integrating both English and official-language search terms to impr

Mobile Imaging-Based Machine Learning for Dental Caries, Sealants, and Fluorosis: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Model Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing dental caries, sealants, and fluorosis is essential for public health surveillance, providing critical data to evaluate national prevention programs. Standard methods performed by dental professionals are often limited by affordability, accessibility, and scalability for both population-level and individualized assessments. Mobile health (mHealth) approaches to concurrently detect caries, sealants, and fluorosis have remained largely unexplored, especially at the population level. OBJECTIVE: This study leverages mHealth technologies that integrate computer vision using m

Comparative Assessment of Compomers and Ormocers as Pit and Fissure Sealants in Permanent Molars among Children Aged 7-9 Years.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the dental profession's focus has shifted from the therapeutic to the preventive aspect of dental caries. Pit and fissure sealants, optimal fluoridation, healthy dietary habits, and good oral hygiene have been recommended for caries prevention. Many sealant materials are available on the market. Compomers are hybrid dental materials that are modified composite resins with polyacids. The esthetic properties of traditional composite systems are combined with the fluoride-releasing and adhesive properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC). Organically modified ceramic (

Antibiotics and oral contraceptives.

With the exception of rifampin-like drugs, there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting the ability of commonly prescribed antibiotics, including all those routinely employed in outpatient dentistry, to either reduce blood levels and/or the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. To date, all clinical trials studying the effects of concomitant antibiotic therapy (with the exception of rifampin and rifabutin) have failed to demonstrate an interaction. Like all drugs, oral contraceptives are not 100% effective with the failure rate in the typical United States population reported to be as hig
