The laparoscopic management of the intrathoracic stomach is still controversial. Laparoscopic semifundoplication in gastroesophageal reflux disease results in effective long-term reflux control and is, as compared with 360 degrees Nissen fundoplication, associated with less frequent side effects such as dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome. The aim of our study was to evaluate the results of laparoscopic anterior semifundoplication in patients with intrathoracic stomach. Enrolled in this study are 19 patients (67.1 years of age; range, 37.5-83.7 years) with intrathoracic stomach undergoing laparos

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: One of the most performed bariatric procedures, Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) can be utilized not only as a primary bariatric procedure to achieve weight loss but also as a staged procedure, as it attains durable weight loss on long term follow up with remission of obesity-related comorbidities. There are several complications associated with LSG in the short and long terms, including hemorrhage, gastric leakage, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), yet gastric volvulus after sleeve gastrectomy is a rare entity.

Gastric necrosis is a rare entity mainly due to the rich collateral blood flow the stomach is supplied by. Acute gastric dilation is one of the described underlying causes, and although not fully understood, many potential alterations, such as vascular compression, herniation, volvulus, acute necrotizing gastritis, complications after abdominal surgery, anorexia, bulimia nervosa, trauma, exposure to caustic materials, diabetes, medications, infections, debilitating chronic illness, gastric outlet obstruction, aerophagia and acute pancreatitis have been described. In this report, we present a c

Bochdalek's hernia typically manifests early in childhood, but it is uncommon in adults. We report the case of a 77-year-old woman who suffered sudden acute cardiorespiratory distress during an upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy, caused by a massive gastrothorax, confirmed by a chest radiograph and thoracic computed tomography. Laparotomy revealed a posterolateral diaphragmatic defect and an acutely distended stomach occupying the left hemithorax, caused by an incomplete organoaxial volvulus of the organ. The stomach was reduced and secured inside the abdominal cavity by a Nissen fundoplication

Gastric volvulus is a distinct and uncommon pathology that usually presents with vomiting secondary to gastric outlet obstruction and gastrointestinal bleeding with an association with hiatal hernia. We present a case of a 71-year-old female who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a three-day history of coffee ground emesis. Of note, the patient was recently in the hospital under medical observation two weeks prior, with similar complaints of hematemesis. Chest X-ray revealed a left basilar opacity representing bowel gas suggestive of a hiatal hernia. Intravenous proton pump inhibi

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity that occurs as a consequence of a rotation of the stomach of more than 180°, with gastric outlet obstruction and vascular compromise. It occurs secondary to diaphragmatic defects in most cases and is mainly reported in elderly patients who are fragile and present severe associated comorbidities. Here we present a nonsurgical treatment with the use of a single percutaneous endoscopic tube to perform gastropexy in patients with a high risk for surgery or inoperable patients. We present two cases that show that this therapeutic option is viable, with acceptable r

BACKGROUND: Cameron ulcers are linear erosions or ulcerations in the setting of large hiatal hernias with potential to lead to life-threatening complications. We report a rare complication of a Cameron ulcer in the setting of an incarcerated paraesophageal hernia with gastric volvulus.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 84 year old female presented in shock from gastric perforation. Imaging demonstrated significant pneumoperitoneum, free fluid, and a large incarcerated paraesophageal hiatal hernia with gastric volvulus. The patient underwent diagnostic laparoscopy revealing a perforated Cameron ulcer with

BACKGROUND The upper stomach can be involved in 1 type of esophageal hiatal hernia in which the degree of stomach insertion is considerable and accompanied by a twist in the shaft of the stomach. The diagnostic accuracy of upper endoscopy or barium meal examination decreases in patients with upside-down stomach, thus making diagnosis of stomach lesions very difficult. No previous reports have described scirrhous gastric cancer in a patient with upside-down stomach. CASE REPORT An 85-year-old woman presented with loss of appetite and vomiting after eating oxalic acid-containing food 2 months pr

Seven adult cows developed abomasal volvulus immediately following correction of left displacement by casting and rolling. Three cows were rolled to provide temporary relief from left displaced abomasum because of concurrent disease and 4 were rolled as the principal therapy for left displacement. In each animal surgical correction of abomasal volvulus was accomplished via right paralumbar fossa celiotomy and inclusion of an omentopexy during abdominal closure. Surgery was performed within 24 hours of casting and rolling. All 7 cows recovered after surgery and were reported to have satisfactor

Two very rare conditions, ileosigmoid knot and intra-abdominal mucormycosis, occurred sequentially in a middle-aged HIV positive male.At laparotomy for peritonitis, a gangrenous sigmoid volvulus with ileosigmoid knot was resected; 2 days later, colo-rectal continuity was restored, the distal ileum stapled and an end jejunostomy fashioned. At re-laparotomy on day 15, necrotic stomach and spleen required a total gastrectomy and splenectomy. At reoperation 2 days later, a bile leak at the oesophago-jejunostomy site was repaired. Despite this intervention he continued to deteriorate and died of mul

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous esophageal rupture, or Boerhaave syndrome, and upside-down stomach are rare pathologies associated with grave sequelae. Boerhaave syndrome can have a mortality rate as high as 44%. Upside-down stomach accounts for less than 5% of hiatal hernias and can lead to incarceration and volvulus.
CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with sudden onset, severe epigastric pain. Physical examination revealed normal vital signs with mild epigastric tenderness. Imaging obtained revealed a large hiatal hernia and findings concerning for esophageal

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel percutaneous radiologic gastropexy (PRG) technique in a canine model and to biomechanically compare this technique to open incisional gastropexy (OIG) and laparoscopic-assisted incisional gastropexy (LAG).
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized ex vivo biomechanical study.
ANIMALS: Canine cadavers.
METHODS: Fifteen cadavers were randomized to 1 of 3 surgical interventions: OIG, LAG, and PRG. For the PRG procedure, the stomach was distended with air, and a preloaded T-fastener device was utilized to attach the stomach to the body wall with fluoroscopic-guidance. The procedur

INTRODUCTION: The primary study objective was to characterize the pattern of in-hospital mortality in dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), with a focus on preoperative nonsurvival.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from a 10-year period was undertaken at a university teaching hospital. Data collected included signalment, physical examination parameters at hospital presentation, blood lactate concentration, and outcome.
RESULTS: A total of 498 dogs were included. Overall, 319 (64.1%) survived to discharge and 179 (35.9%) were nonsurvivors. Of the non

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCCIóN: Gastric volvulus is characterized by a rotation, in its long or short axis, generating various degrees of obstruction, which can occur acutely or chronically.
CASE: A 45-year-old female. Refers to the performance of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication 4 years ago. In December 2018, she presented a recurrence of the symptoms associated with reflux, for which a new laparoscopic fundoplication was performed (outside our medical unit) without eventualities or apparent complications. Six months later, he was admitted to our medical unit due to intolerance to the oral route

A massive incarcerated hiatal hernia is a frequent finding in elderly people. The aim of this report has been to review from 1987 to 1992 the clinical aspects, therapeutic options and results of surgical treatment in a series of twenty-eight patients (23 females and 5 males) with a large incarcerated hiatal hernia. Age averaged 66 +/- 10 years; thirteen patients (46.5%) had a sliding type of hernia, 8 (28.5%) a mixed one, and 7 (25%) a paraesophageal hernia. In 9 patients (32%) there was a chronic volvulus of the incarcerated stomach. Twenty-seven patients underwent elective repair; one patien
