Posttraumatic stress disorder in patients with traumatic brain injury and amnesia for the event?

Frequency of DSM-III-R posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was studied in 47 active-duty service members (46 male, 1 female; mean age 27 = 7) with moderate traumatic brain injury and neurogenic amnesia for the event. Patients had attained "oriented and cooperative" recovery level. When evaluated with a modified Present State Examination and other questions at various points from study entry to 24-month follow-up, no patients met full criteria for PTSD or met criterion B (reexperience); 6 (13%) met both C (avoidance) and D (arousal) criteria. Five of these 6 also had organic mood disorder, dep

Exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. Four case studies.

Four cases of PTSD, and their treatment, are described. Symptoms responded differently to two behavioural approaches. In-vivo exposure was effective for phobic anxiety while imaginal exposure improved dysphoria and some phobic symptoms. Audio-taped imaginal exposure may be important as part of treatment.

Traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder in an urban population of young adults.

To ascertain the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and risk factors associated with it, we studied a random sample of 1007 young adults from a large health maintenance organization in the Detroit, Mich, area. The lifetime prevalence of exposure to traumatic events was 39.1%. The rate of PTSD in those who were exposed was 23.6%, yielding a lifetime prevalence in the sample of 9.2%. Persons with PTSD were at increased risk for other psychiatric disorders; PTSD had stronger associations with anxiety and affective disorders than with substance abuse or dependence. Risk factors for

Invited review: post-traumatic stress disorder; a new clinical entity?

Recently a spate of large scale disasters has caught public attention. Survivors of unexpected catastrophes find their lives radically changed. They may develop a characteristic pattern of symptoms in response to their exposure to overwhelming stress. Ten years ago, American psychiatrists introduced a new diagnostic category, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), referring to the range of psychological symptoms survivors demonstrate after extreme trauma (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, APA, Washington D.C.). Although the validity of this syndrome remains debatable, the

A non-randomized pilot trial of the use of prazosin in the prevention of transition from acute stress disorder to post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Following a traumatic event, 40-80% of the patients with acute stress disorder (ASD) will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 67% at 6 months. Alpha1-blockers are effective in treating some symptoms of PTSD but their usefulness in acute stress situations remains unclear. We hypothesized that reducing noradrenergic hyperactivity with an alpha1-blocker during the acute phase after a traumatic event could prevent the transition to PTSD in patients with ASD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a 1-month course of alpha1-blocker (prazosin) to prevent the tra

Is the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) Effective for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? A Meta-Analysis.

Following collective traumas, the need for mental health services to become accessible to a large number of people in a short time not only requires the effectiveness of psychological interventions but also their accessibility. Collective experiences such as natural disasters, wars, forced migration, epidemics and incidents of social violence pose a significant risk to public mental health because they affect multiple individuals simultaneously. Therefore, along with individual therapy, group therapy is becoming increasingly important in making mental health services accessible to more people

Verbal Memory in Traumatic Brain Injury: Associations With Age, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Antidepressant Use.

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory is one of the cognitive domains most affected after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and memory decline is a hallmark of both normal aging and Alzheimer disease (AD). Although TBI is reported to accelerate age-related cognitive decline and brain atrophy, it is unclear how this trajectory is shaped by frequent co-occurring factors such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychotropic medication use. This study tested whether age-related decline in delayed verbal memory is more pronounced among adults with a history of TBI than those without TBI. Analyses also

Efficacy of imagery rehearsal therapy in the treatment of traumatic nightmares in youth with complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic nightmares are a core feature in adolescents with complex PTSD (CPTSD) exposed to early and repeated trauma, maintaining hyperactivity and dysregulation. Despite their prevalence and functional impact, targeted treatments for youth remain scarce. Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) is a brief cognitive-behavioral intervention effective in adults, but evidence in adolescents with CPTSD is limited. METHODS: This study assessed the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of four sessions of IRT adapted for young participants (14-25 years) with CPTSD. Thirty-nine participants

Post-traumatic stress disorder in autistic and non-autistic adults: The impact of appraisals on reactions to traumatic events.

Research suggests autistic people experience greater post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity than non-autistic people following traumatic events. Post-trauma appraisals are fundamental in cognitive models of post-traumatic stress disorder, but have not been explored in autistic people. We aimed to explore whether we could replicate effects of heightened trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity in autistic adults, and examine how post-traumatic appraisals affect the association between autism and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity. Two hundred for

Traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder are not associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology measured with biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies report an association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined the association between TBI/PTSD and biomarker-defined AD. METHODS: We identified 289 non-demented veterans with TBI and/or PTSD and controls who underwent clinical evaluation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau positron emission tomography, and apolipoprotein E testing. Participants were followed for up to 5.2 years. RESULTS: Expo

Post-traumatic stress disorder and self-reported outcomes after traumatic brain injury in victims of assault.

INTRODUCTION: Assault is the third most common cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI), after falls and road traffic collisions. TBI can lead to multiple long-term physical, cognitive and emotional sequelae, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intentional violence may further compound the psychological trauma of the event, in a way that conventional outcome measures, like the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), fail to capture. This study aims to examine the influence of assault on self-reported outcomes, including quality of life and symptoms of PTSD. METHODS: Questionnaire were complete

Post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic events in China: a nationally representative cross-sectional epidemiological study.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most severe sequelae of trauma. But a nationally representative epidemiological data for PTSD and trauma events (TEs) was unavailable in China. This article firstly demonstrated detailed epidemiological information on PTSD, TEs, and related comorbidities in the national-wide community-based mental health survey in China. A total of 9,378 participants completed the PTSD-related interview of the CIDI 3.0. Lifetime prevalence and 12-month prevalence of PTSD in total respondents were 0.3% and 0.2%. while the conditional lifetime and 12-month prev

A Qualitative Exploration of the Use of Service Dogs in Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative research was conducted to add to the body of knowledge that supports the benefits of service dogs (SDs), as a tertiary treatment modality, to veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: This grounded theory research design utilized open-ended, semi-structured interviews with veterans (n = 10) who were using SDs as a treatment modality for PTSD and/or TBI. Transcripts were analyzed using NVivo qualitative software until data saturation was achieved. RESULTS: Results from the data analysis identified 4 major them

Prospective Associations of Lifetime Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Birth-Related Traumatization With Maternal and Infant Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Many women experience traumatic events already prior to or during pregnancy, and delivery of a child may also be perceived as a traumatic event, especially in women with prior post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Birth-related PTSD might be unique in several ways, and it seems important to distinguish between lifetime PTSD and birth-related traumatization in order to examine specific consequences for mother and child. This post-hoc analysis aims to prospectively examine the relation of both, lifetime PTSD (with/without interpersonal trauma) and birth-related traumatization (with/w

Media Exposure and the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Mass traumatic Event: An In-silico Experiment.

Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida that experienced the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. We parametr

Structural Connectome Disruptions in Military Personnel with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in military populations and share numerous symptoms. Functional graph theory studies demonstrate altered small-world brain networks in mTBI and PTSD, but little is known about structural covariance networks or the potentially distinct topology of mTBI-PTSD comorbidity. The purpose of this study was to compare brain structural covariance networks in healthy active duty military service members (CON) to those with PTSD, mTBI, and mTBI-PTSD. Seventy-six service members (31 CON, 14 PTSD, 12 mTBI, 19 mTBI-PTSD)
