University Students Who Report Exchanging Sex for Money or Other Compensation: Findings from a Public University Sample.

Whether and how university students exchange sex for financial compensation in the USA is critically understudied. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine whether undergraduate and graduate students at a large public university report exchanging sex for financial or other compensation, and identify factors (e.g., demographics, childhood adversity, mental health) associated with exchanging sex. Participants were 600 college students (Mage = 21.3 years [SD = 3.8]); 72% cisgender women; 43.4% racial/ethnic minority) from a large public university in the Northeastern USA who comple

An Evaluation of MINDFIT-A Student Therapeutic Running Group as a Multi-Layered Intervention in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an ever-increasing concern for UK Universities and is underreported. Creative and dynamic approaches to tackle student wellbeing are important. In 2018, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) Student Wellbeing Service initiated a pilot study of a therapeutic running programme 'MINDFIT' that combined physical activity, led by a counsellor, alongside a psychoeducation approach to support student mental health. METHODS: Mixed methods were used which included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), evaluating low mood and depression, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Sc

Support for Offering Sexual Health Services Through School-Based Health Clinics.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies document support for sexuality education in the schools. However, there is a dearth of research assessing support for sexual health services offered through school-based health clinics (SBHCs). The purpose of this study was to assess voter support for offering 3 sexual health services (STI/HIV testing, STI/HIV treatment, condom distribution) through SBHCs. METHODS: The survey was developed after review of existing surveys on support for sexuality education and sexual health services. The university's Public Opinion Research Laboratory used random-digit-dialing to

Exploring the influence of COVID-19 stress on mental health among international undergraduate and graduate students: A mixed-methods approach.

International college students in the United States are at increased risk of developing mental health disorders and are less likely to seek mental health services. However, little is known about the effects of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of international undergraduate students compared to their graduate counterparts studying in the US. This study examined the associations between COVID-19 stress, anxiety, and depression and whether education level moderates these associations in international undergraduate and graduate students. A cross-sectional online survey cont

Facilitators and barriers to contraceptive uptake and use: Perspectives of female students in South Africa and lessons for quality provision of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Young women in South Africa face a dual risk of unplanned pregnancies and HIV infections. The country's high contraceptive prevalence rate masks underlying challenges affecting the initiation and maintenance of contraceptive use. Options are freely available at public health clinics and most women in the country use long-acting injectable contraceptives. Young women's experiences of contraceptive services provide a unique opportunity to learn lessons for long-acting HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The paper aims to explore facilitators and barriers to using contraceptives among young fema

Diaphragm method contraceptors: implications for service organization and delivery.

Despite dissemination of modern contraceptive techniques among college women, unplanned pregnancy and pregnancy termination rates remain a major health issue. An investigation of 495 college women who use the diaphragm method of contraception was conducted in order to estimate pregnancy occurrence, to better understand factors related to successful use, and to profile service utilization patterns. Data were collected by medical record audit and client survey. Fifteen percent of the diaphragm clients reported a diaphragm-related pregnancy; clinical effectiveness was estimated to be 88% with a r

Mental Health in College Students: From Epidemiological Findings to Sustainable Policies.

Higher education has seen rising enrollment, mobility, and diversity; there are approximately 254 million students globally, a figure that has doubled since the early 2000s. The college years (roughly the age range between 18 and 30) coincide with key developmental phases marked by personal, social, and academic stressors like leaving home and adjusting to new environments. This period is high-risk for mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, which negatively affect academic success and future quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged students' mental health due to isolatio

School-Based Interventions That Address Students' Unmet Material Needs: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Unmet material needs disrupt student learning and behavior. Some school-based programs address these needs, but we know less about their impact. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of studies published between 2013 and 2023 in the United States that evaluated school-based strategies to address unmet material needs. FINDINGS: We included 55 studies and identified four intervention types: providing food, delivering healthcare, connecting families to resources, and offering transportation. Researchers have evaluated these interventions for school performance, participation, and s

Unpacking School-Based Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Programs: A Realist Review.

Background: Existing efforts to understand school-based child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs mainly focus on the effectiveness of these programs in increasing participants' CSA knowledge and self-protective skills. There are currently no reviews addressing the underpinning pathways leading to these outcomes. In order to increase our understanding about the underpinning causal and contextual factors and inform the further development of school-based CSA prevention programs, a realist review was conducted to synthesize existing evidence from a broad range of data. Methods: An iterative s

The mechanisms by which a whole-school intervention might improve sexual health: qualitative realist research nested in a trial in English secondary schools.

Whole-school interventions go beyond classroom education, promoting health by modifying school environments. These can be effective in delaying sexual debut and increasing contraception use but mechanisms are poorly understood. Qualitative research within realist evaluation can explore mechanisms via building 'context-mechanism-outcome configurations', describing how interventions trigger mechanisms that interact with context to generate outcomes. We explored these for the Positive Choices whole-school sexual health intervention within the intervention arm of a randomised trial conducted 2021-
