The use of clinical measures in the Lidcombe Programme for children who stutter.

This paper aims to demonstrate how the speech measures which are collected to inform the therapy process also have the potential to evaluate clinical change and effectiveness. Certain methodological issues pertinent to evaluating therapy for early stuttering are raised and the clinical measures that are a part of the Lidcombe Programme (Onslow 1993) are discussed in relation to these. Reference to a single case study is made to demonstrate how the measures contribute to clinical decision-making. Some initial results of the authors' use of the Lidocombe Programme in the UK is outlined.

[A management for severe acquired stuttering in a case of pure akinesia syndrome].

We reported a 73-year-old man with pure akinesia syndrome who showed severe acquired stuttering and paradoxical kinesia on speech. He was evaluated in another hospital for bradykinesia and frozen gait at age of 67 when his cranial MRI disclosed ischemic changes in bilateral basal ganglia and periventricular deep white matter. The treatment with L-dopa and L-threo DOPS was not effective. His symptoms were slowly progressive and got worse gradually. At age of 72, he began to have difficulty in speech due to severe acquired stuttering, and one year later, he visited our hospital. The diagnosis of…

Long-term follow-up of a behavioral treatment for stuttering in children.

We report 3.5-year follow-up data from children who participated in a study that evaluated a behavioral treatment for stuttering. Six of 7 subjects continued to be at or below the criterion of 3% stuttered words. Stuttering increased for 1 subject, but remained far below his baseline level. Social validity data are also reported.

The contribution of the excitatory source to the perception of neutral vowels in stuttered speech.

The vowel in part-word repetitions in stuttered speech often sounds neutralized. In the present article, measurements of the excitatory source made during such episodes of dysfluency are reported. These measurements show that, compared with fluent utterances, the glottal volume velocities are lower in amplitude and shorter in duration and that the energy occurs more towards the low-frequency end of the spectrum. In a first perceptual experiment, the effects of varying the amplitude and duration of the glottal source were assessed. The glottal volume velocity recordings of the /ae/ vowels used

Evaluation of regulated-breathing method and awareness training in the treatment of stuttering.

Twelve subjects participated in this study. One group was treated by means of the regulated-breathing technique (Azrin & Nunn, 1974). Three other groups were treated similarly after receiving additional types of awareness training. Measures of stuttering were obtained obtrusively and unobtrusively during telephone and laboratory interviews before, during, at termination, and two months after the end of treatment. It was hypothesized that increasing a subject's awareness of his stuttering before treatment would lead to better maintenance of therapeutic gains. Results partially support this hypo…

Temperament Profiles and Their Association With Stuttering-Related Outcomes in a Clinical Cohort.

PURPOSE: Previous research on temperament in developmental stuttering has primarily treated emotional reactivity and self-regulation as separate constructs. Examining their interaction is likely to yield more comprehensive insights into their joint influence on stuttering-related outcomes. Therefore, this study examined how the interplay between emotional reactivity and self-regulation is reflected in differences in stuttering severity, speech attitude, levels of anxiety and depression, and the impact of stuttering. METHOD: A total of 322 younger (ages 3-8 years) and 468 older children (ages …

An investigation of the effectiveness of bihemispheric tDCS on speech fluency in individuals with stuttering.

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes frequent disruptions in speech flow and affects individuals' lives in many aspects. Recent research on the effectiveness of neuromodulation interventions in stuttering suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can potentially reduce stuttering symptoms, although it is not clear what the optimal stimulation parameters are, and which specific outcomes benefit from tDCS. 36 individuals with stuttering (32 males, 4 females) completed a randomized, double-blind, sham controlled study. Nineteen participants received 1 mA stim…

Pragmatic Language Skills of Turkish-Speaking Children Who Stutter.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between pragmatic language skills of children who stutter (CWS) and the frequency of stuttering, with a focus on the development of these skills through peer interaction in the school years. It is well-known that CWS may face social disadvantages at school due to their limited peer interaction, which may pose a risk to the development of their pragmatic language skills. METHOD: The study involved 64 CWS aged between 60 and 106 months. Stuttering frequency was determined by analyzing children's spontaneous speech recordings during p…

Exploring the needs and preferences of Saudi Arabian adolescents who stutter.

PURPOSE: During adolescence, individuals experience rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. This transition may raise additional challenges for an adolescent who stutters. Although previous research has examined the experiences of adolescents who stutter, their preferences remain unstudied, particularly in non-Western countries. This qualitative study explored how Saudi Arabian adolescents who stutter perceive their stuttering and its management, and their preferences for support. METHOD: To gain preliminary insight into this unstudied area of research, eight participants, aged 1…

A narrative review on sleep-related painful erections - is this stuttering priapism?

Sleep-related painful erections (SRPE) and stuttering priapism (SP) are two rare disorders of penile erection. The aim of this article is to highlight the key similarities and differences between each condition and their management. We performed a literature review on the PubMed and Medline databases with a particular focus on the pathophysiology, risk factors, investigations and management of SRPE and SP. The main presenting feature in both SRPE and SP is sleep disruption due to brief episodes of painful erections that are typically self-limiting. SP is considered a subtype of ischaemic priap…

Risk of sleep problems in a clinical sample of children who stutter.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown increased prevalence of sleep problems among people who stutter. However, there is a lack of knowledge about what these sleep problems may specifically be. METHOD: Fifty children who stutter (CWS) from 6;0 to 12;9 years of age and 50 age- and gender-matched controls participated in this study. Parents did not report coexisting conditions, excepting stuttering and/or sleep problems. Sleep problems were investigated using a standardized questionnaire answered by parents. The questionnaire shows cut-off scores to identify the risk of sleep problems as a whole…

The experience of Polish individuals who stutter based on the OASES outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that stuttering is a complex and individualized condition. The Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES; Yaruss & Quesal, 2016) is a well-researched tool that measures the impact of stuttering on an individual's life. This study has used the Polish version of the OASES to examine the experience of stuttering among Polish people who stutter. METHOD: The original, English version of the OASES was translated into Polish. Reliability and validity for the Polish version were evaluated. Comparisons were made between samples from Poland…

Speech Therapy and Earnings: Economic Benefits for Individuals Who Stutter.

Stuttering is a complex communication disorder with effects that extend beyond difficulty with communication. Negative thoughts and feelings by the person who stutters (PWS), about the disorder or themselves, may potentially lead to detrimental avoidance behaviors which may ultimately alter life choices and participation in life events. One such area is the labor market. Studies have revealed an association between stuttering and reduced earnings. What is not understood is whether provision of speech therapy for PWS can help mitigate the negative labor market impacts of this condition. This ar…

Atypical development of Broca's area in a large family with inherited stuttering.

Developmental stuttering is a condition of speech dysfluency, characterized by pauses, blocks, prolongations and sound or syllable repetitions. It affects around 1% of the population, with potential detrimental effects on mental health and long-term employment. Accumulating evidence points to a genetic aetiology, yet gene-brain associations remain poorly understood due to a lack of MRI studies in affected families. Here we report the first neuroimaging study of developmental stuttering in a family with autosomal dominant inheritance of persistent stuttering. We studied a four-generation family…

Working with young children who stutter: raising our game.

Several therapy programs have been demonstrated to be effective in supporting the development of fluency in preschool children who stutter. However, there is increasing evidence in allied fields suggesting that a positive therapy outcome cannot be entirely attributed to the therapy program itself, but also depends on what the therapist brings to the therapeutic context. This article seeks to discuss the therapist's skills and attributes that play a part in the development of the therapeutic alliance, which underpins therapy involving parents of young children who stutter. Using a model of clin
