Exploring the Psychological Mechanisms of Self-Aggression in Male Individuals with Substance Use Disorders: A Study Combining Interpretability Automated Machine Learning and Conditional Process Model.

Background: Individuals with substance use disorders often exhibit self-aggressive behaviors, which are linked to childhood trauma, the psychological mechanisms underlying self-aggression in substance use disorders remain unclear. This study utilizes key features extracted based on feature importance from explainable machine learning to establish a conditional process model, exploring significant psychological processes related to self-aggression in males with substance use disorders. Methods: Data were collected from 479 male individuals with substance use disorders in a compulsory detoxifica

Gambling disorder comorbidity a narrative review.

Introduction: Problematic and pathological gambling (PG) lead to major adverse consequences for individuals, their families, and society and is highly comorbid with numerous other mental health disorders. Methods: This narrative review summarized population-based, cross-sectional, treatment and prospective studies on gambling disorder and comorbidity over the past 14 years. Results: These studies show a high rate of comorbidity of PG and substance and alcohol use disorders, mood and anxiety disorders. Prospective studies indicate that, in some cases, gambling precedes the onset of the comorbid

Comorbidity of binge eating disorder and other psychiatric disorders: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating disorder (BED), although relatively recently recognized as a distinct clinical syndrome, is the most common eating disorder. BED can occur as a separate phenomenon or in combination with other mental disorders, adding to the overall burden of the illness. Due to the relatively short history of recognizing BED as a distinct disorder, this review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the co-occurrence of BED with other psychiatric disorders. METHOD: This review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Multiple databases, such as MEDLINE, MEDLINE Complete, and Academic Sea

Characteristics of Non-Opioid Substance Misusers Among Patients Enrolling in Opioid Treatment Programs: A Latent Class Analysis.

Using latent class analysis, this study examined the pattern of non-opioid substance misuse among 19,101 enrollees into 85 opioid treatment programs. The most frequent non-opioid drugs were cannabis, anti-anxiety medications, and cocaine. Four non-opioid drug use latent classes were identified: low-use (73%), prescription drug use (16%), marijuana and cocaine use (8.5%), and poly-drug use (2.5%). Compared to the low-use class, participants in the other classes were more likely to be female, Caucasian, use tobacco, have chronic pain, and use prescription opioids either with or without heroin. Management of the pregnant substance abusing woman.

Operation PAR has been involved in prevention and treatment service development for drug-dependent women for nearly 40 years. Management starts with prevention programs. For opiate-addicted pregnant women, methadone is the treatment of choice and should be maintained throughout pregnancy, despite the manageable problem of neonatal opiate withdrawal. Women are actively engaged in innovative educational and therapeutic activities to help moms build skills to enhance their personal health and develop recovery orientation and drug refusal skills. Specific parenting skills are modeled and taught bo

Links between eating disorder symptom severity and psychiatric comorbidity.

Patients with eating disorders (ED) frequently exhibit additional psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to examine whether psychiatric com … quency of binge-eating and frequency of purging both were associated with Axis I anxiety disorders, substance-related disorders, and Cluster B personality disorders. Frequency of dieting was related to anxiety disorders on both axes. Multivariate analyses revealed that Axis I anxiety disorders were more closely linked with severity of ED symptoms than affective or substance- …

Association Between Substance Use Diagnoses and Psychiatric Disorders in an Adolescent and Young Adult Clinic-Based Population.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with substance use disorders are more likely to have a current psychiatric disorder. However, when compared with the adult literature, there is relatively limited information regarding the specific co-occurrence of certain mental health diagnoses and substance use disorders in adolescents. The objectives of this study were to build on the previous literature regarding mental health diagnoses and different types of substance use disorders in adolescents, as well as explore the differences, if any, between groupings of mental health diagnosis and type of substance used. Vaccines as Immunotherapies for Substance Use Disorders.

Substance use disorders (SUD) present a worldwide challenge with few effective therapies except for the relative efficacy of opioid pharmacotherapies, despite limited treatment access. However, the proliferation of illicit fentanyl use initiated a dramatic and cascading epidemic of lethal overdoses. This rise in fentanyl overdoses regenerated an interest in vaccine immunotherapy, which, despite an optimistic start in animal models over the past 50 years, yielded disappointing results in human clinical trials of vaccines against nicotine, stimulants (cocaine and methamphetamine), and opioids. From Bumps to Binges: Overview of Deaths Associated with Cocaine in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (2000-2019).

The UK, as the "cocaine capital of Europe," currently accounts for ∼75% of all cocaine-related hospital admissions in Europe. This study aims to analyze the trends in cocaine-related deaths in England, Wales and Northern Ireland over 20 years (2000-2019). Cases reported to the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths (NPSAD) occurring between 2000 and 2019 where cocaine was detected at post-mortem (PM) were extracted for analysis. A total of 5,339 cases were retrieved, with an increase in the rate of reporting over time. Cocaine was deemed a cause of death and quantified in PM blood sample

Substance Use Disorders and Medication-Assisted Therapies: Current Practices and Implications for Nursing.

In the United States, the opioid epidemic and COVID-19-related substance use have exacerbated the overall incidence of substance use disorders (SUDs). Medication-assisted therapy (MAT), or cognitive and behavioral therapy that combines medications that reduce substance use or acute withdrawal symptoms, has dramatically improved outcomes for SUD patients, including preventing mortality. With recent US Congressional funding for MAT, patients presenting for acute care on MAT-related medications will continue to increase. Nurses should be aware of these medications' mechanism of action, typical si

A network-based analysis detects cocaine-induced changes in social interactions in Drosophila melanogaster.

Addiction is a multifactorial biological and behavioral disorder that is studied using animal models, based on simple behavioral responses in isolated individuals. A couple of decades ago it was shown that Drosophila melanogaster can serve as a model organism for behaviors related to alcohol, nicotine and cocaine (COC) addiction. Scoring of COC-induced behaviors in a large group of flies has been technologically challenging, so we have applied a local, middle and global level of network-based analyses to study social interaction networks (SINs) among a group of 30 untreated males compared to t

Cocaine abstinence during the "critical period" of a contingency management trial predicts future abstinence in people with cocaine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Contingency Management (CM) is being piloted as a treatment for stimulant use disorder in several US states, highlighting the need for treatment optimization. One important goal of optimization is decreasing drug use during the early stages of treatment, which has predicted success in other interventions. However, this "critical period" has not been reported in CM trials. The purpose of this analysis was to determine if, after accounting for baseline abstinence and incentive condition, abstinence in a CM trial for people with Cocaine Use Disorder (CUD) could be predicted by cocaine

Longitudinal changes in network engagement during cognitive control in cocaine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is characterized by poor cognitive control and has limited empirically supported treatment options. Furthermore, an understanding of brain mechanisms underlying CUD is at a relatively early stage. Thus, this study aimed to investigate longitudinal alterations in functional neural networks associated with cognitive control in cocaine use disorder (CUD). METHODS: Secondary analysis was performed on data from 44 individuals who participated in three randomized clinical trials for CUD and completed an fMRI Stroop task both at baseline and post-treatment. Comorbid mental disorders in substance users from a single catchment area--a clinical study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) requires an awareness of their comorbid mental disorders and vice versa. The prevalence of comorbidity in first-time-admitted SUD patients has been insufficiently studied. Diagnosing comorbidity in substance users is complicated by symptom overlap, symptom fluctuations, and the limitations of the assessment methods. The aim of this study was to diagnose all mental disorders in substance users living in a single catchment area, without any history of treatment for addiction or psychiatric disorders, admitted conse

Outreach Models for Substance Use Disorder in Homeless Populations: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The relative effectiveness of outreach models used to address substance use disorder among homeless populations remains unclear. This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy of various outreach interventions in improving substance use outcomes among homeless populations. METHODS: A systematic search of studies (published January 1990-January 2024) in the PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted. A network meta-analysis was executed to compare outcomes of substance use frequency (self-reported days of substance use acro

Living with sibling' drug use. Bereaved siblings' family stories.

Family members' problematic drug use is challenging for siblings affecting their well-being and their relationships within the family. Research about siblings living with brothers or sisters' problematic drug use and research on bereaved siblings' experiences indicates that life situations and support needs for both minor siblings and adult siblings can easily be overlooked, both in practice and in research. This article contributes to this knowledge gap by examining how siblings provide meaning to their sibling's drug use problem and how they position themselves and other family members accor

Substance Use in Adolescents with ADHD and Bipolar Spectrum Disorders: The Transdiagnostic Role of Emotional Dysregulation, Impulsivity and Hypersensitivity Traits.

Background/Objectives: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar spectrum disorders are at increased risk of substance use; categorical diagnoses may not fully explain individual variability in substance-related outcomes. This study examined substance use severity in clinically complex adolescents, focusing on the role of primary diagnosis and transdiagnostic dimensions (emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, cyclothymic-hypersensitive traits). Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 47 adolescents (aged 14-17) with DSM-5 diagnoses of ADHD or bip

Rumination and problematic substance use among individuals with a long-term history of illicit drug use.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a cognitive process that is implicated in the development and maintenance of various forms of psychopathology, including problematic substance use. Most studies on the role of rumination in substance use have been conducted among community samples or individuals with alcohol use disorders and have predominately focused on overall rumination rather than differentiating between its subtypes, ruminative brooding and ruminative reflection. The current study therefore aimed to investigate i) whether rumination subtypes are associated with problematic substance use among pe

Substance-use disorders and poverty as prospective predictors of first-time homelessness in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether substance-use disorders and poverty predicted first-time homelessness over 3 years. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from waves 1 (2001-2002) and 2 (2004-2005) of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions to determine the main and interactive effects of wave 1 substance use disorders and poverty on first-time homelessness by wave 2, among those who were never homeless at wave 1 (n = 30,558). First-time homelessness was defined as having no regular place to live or having to live with others for 1 month or more as a result of havi
