Differentiation between benign and malignant disease of the breast using digital subtraction angiography of the breast.

The authors have investigated digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for the differential diagnosis of breast lesions detected initially by mammography. Eighteen patients scheduled for biopsy first underwent digital subtraction angiography of the breast (DSAB). Criteria for malignancy included the presence of abnormal vessels and a "blush" in the area of the lesion. A total of 17 lesions are currently available for histopathologic correlation. Although this is a small series, the initial results of DSAB suggest its potential utility for differentiating between benign and malignant lesions.

Results of intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IVDSA) as a screening method for renovascular hypertension.

Since January 1982 we have combined urography in hypertensive patients with intravenous angiography of the renal arteries. In more than 80% of 163 patients the examination was of good diagnostic quality and both renal arteries were well visualised. IVDSA has a lower morbidity and cost than conventional angiography. It is more accurate than urography and therefore offers better screening of a selected group of hypertensive patients.

Intracranial Vessel Wall MRI in Cryptogenic Stroke and Intracranial Vasculitis.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial vasculopathies easily elude classic stroke work-up. We aim in this work to show that vessel wall-MRI could prove an efficient alternative to digital subtraction angiography for the diagnosis of intracranial vasculopathies by identifying intracranial arterial vessel walls anomalies and contrast enhancement, suggestive of angiitis of the central nervous system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical and imaging characteristics of stroke patients diagnosed with primary angiitis of the central nervous system based on vessel wall-MRI were retrospectively reviewed and the clinic

MR dynamic enhancement of breast lesions: high temporal resolution during the first-minute versus eight-minute study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the value of the early phase of MR enhancement of breast lesions. METHOD: To study 63 breast lesions (size 5-45 mm in diameter) in 56 patients, whole-breast and lesion-targeted precontrast T1 -weighted gradient-echo 2D sequences were acquired. After intravenous injection of Gd-DTPA (0.1 mmol/Kg), four targeted scans, each every 15 seconds during the first minute (1-m), and seven whole-breast scans, each every minute up to 8 minutes (8-m), were performed. The subtraction technique was used, and percent enhancement curves were obtained. The final diagnosis was obtained b

Improved visualization of diffusion-prepared MR neurography (SHINKEI) in the lumbosacral plexus combining high-intensity reduction (HIRE) technique.

PURPOSE: This study attempted to improve visualization of the pelvic nervous system using the high-intensity reduction (HIRE)-nerve-SHeath signal increased with INKed rest-tissue RARE Imaging (SHINKEI) technique that involves subtracting signals of 3D heavily T2W images from SHINKEI images. We identified the optimum TE value for 3D heavily T2W images and assessed the usefulness of the HIRE-SHINKEI technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Coronal lumbosacral plexus images were acquired from six healthy volunteers at 3 T. We optimized the TE of the 3D heavily T2-weighted (T2W) images in HIRE-SHINKEI a

CSF-Venous Fistulas: Anatomy and Diagnostic Imaging.

CSF-venous fistulas (CVFs), first described in 2014, are an important cause of spontaneous intracranial hypotension. CVFs can be challenging to detect on conventional anatomic imaging because, unlike other types of spinal CSF leak, they do not typically result in pooling of fluid in the epidural space, and imaging signs of CVF may be subtle. Specialized myelographic techniques have been developed to help with CVF identification, but these techniques are not yet widely disseminated. This article reviews the current understanding of CVFs, emphasizing correlations between venous anatomy and imagi

Postoperative assessment of extracranial-intracranial bypass by time-resolved 3D contrast-enhanced MR angiography using parallel imaging.

PURPOSE: Our goals were to assess image quality of time-resolved contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CE MRA), by using 3D data acquisition along with a parallel imaging technique that can improve temporal resolution and to compare this technique with 3D-time-of-flight (TOF) MRA in the postoperative assessment of extracranial (EC)-intracranial (IC) bypass surgery. METHODS: On a 1.5T imaging system, we performed CE MRA by using a 3D fast field-echo sequence in combination with a parallel imaging technique, to obtain images in the coronal plane centered at the postoperative site. Our patient group

Intraoperative DSA-guided minimal approach for craniocervical junction DAVFs obliteration.

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are a group of diseases involving problematic shunts between dural arteries and venous structures such as sinuses, meningeal veins, or even cortical veins. To focus on craniocervical junction dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs), we introduce a minimally invasive technique with midline incision combined with intraoperative digital subtraction angiography (DSA). This hybrid technique can minimize the incision wound to an average of 6 cm which leads to less destruction and lower risk of adverse events. METHOD: Using this minimally invasive approa

Iatrogenic retinal central artery occlusion after a cerebral digital subtraction angiography.

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a technique used in interventional radiology for the diagnosis of vascular cerebral conditions. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a complication of endovascular procedures that involve atherosclerotic plaque removal with subsequent embolisation. The case is presented on a patient who noticed a sudden vision loss during a DSA. Funduscopy showed retinal pallor and a cherry red spot. The angiography showed a structure suggesting the presence of an embolus in the central retinal artery. The patient was diagnosed with a CRAO, and unsuccessfully trea

Sagittal plane deformity in the adult patient.

Recent studies have demonstrated that sagittal balance is the most important and reliable radiographic predictor of clinical health status in the adult with a spinal deformity. Affected persons typically present with intractable pain, early fatigue, and a perception of being off-balance. Nonsurgical management with nonsteroidal and analgesic medications as well as physical therapy plays a limited role. Surgical correction is the primary method of alleviating symptoms. The surgical approach depends largely on the amount of correction required to restore overall balance. Options include posterio

Simple partial status epilepticus localized by single-photon emission computed tomography subtraction in chronic cerebral paragonimiasis.

A patient with chronic cerebral paragonimiasis began to have new motor seizures of the right face manifested by clonic contractions that occurred several hundred times a day, consistent with simple partial status epilepticus. Ictal electroencephalogram discharges started from the left frontal region and then spread to the left hemisphere with left frontal maximum. But clinical seizures were limited to the right face. The frequent partial seizures were controlled by the intravenous infusion of phenytoin. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple conglomerated round nodules with encephalo

[Diagnosis of a post-thrombophlebitic dural fistula using MR angiography].

We report a case in which MRA made it possible to diagnose a dural arteriovenous fistula and thrombophlebitis in a 23-year old woman. 2D TOF MRA is the usual technique in the diagnosis of thrombophlebitis. Our experience shows the limits of 2D TOF since the increased signal intensity in the sinus could simulate a normal flow, and we describe the advantages of MR subtraction angiography. In our study, 3D TOF MRA showed the dural arteriovenous fistula, its location near the right transverse sinus and some of the feeding vessels: tentorial branch of the internal carotid artery and meningeal branc

[Phlebography of the upper extremity. I. The technic and findings in 230 studies].

We report on 230 phlebographic examinations in the shoulder arm region which were performed by conventional X-ray technique and/or digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The detailed method of examination as well as anatomical variants of the vessels are explained. The group of patients was analysed concerning its composition and was subdivided with regard to clinically relevant diagnoses. Contrary to statements in the literature, the number of pathological findings in men or women were equal. The main age was between 40 and 50 years. The brachial vein was found to be doubled so often that thi

Intravenous digital subtraction angiography in the assessment of patients for carotid endarterectomy.

Preoperative intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IV DSA) was compared with the operative findings in 54 patients who underwent a total of 57 carotid endarterectomies, to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative IV DSA in predicting the lesion found at surgery. Four studies early in the series were technically unsatisfactory, leaving 50 patients with 53 procedures for evaluation. Severe carotid artery stenosis was accurately predicted in all cases. Deep ulceration in the absence of severe carotid stenosis was reliably shown by IV DSA, although it was not reliably demonstrated by either IV

Scanned projection radiography of the chest versus standard film radiography: a comparison of 250 cases.

Two hundred fifty patients who had 240 pathological changes of the lungs or mediastinum were examined using both scanned projection radiography (SPR) and standard film radiography, and the diagnostic accuracy of the procedures was compared. The use of standard film radiography led to diagnostic findings in 90.1% of the cases, while 94% of the images obtained at SPR provided diagnostic findings. The equivalent performance and, in part, the slight superiority obtained with the digital technique is a result of the better contrast resolution for objects with diameters greater than 2 mm. Experimental analysis of femoral head intraosseous vascular anastomosis in the treatment of porcine subcapital femoral neck fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures are challenging injuries associated with a compromised blood supply to the femoral head, leading to a high risk of avascular necrosis and poor clinical outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of femoral head intraosseous vascular anastomosis in the treatment of porcine sub-capital femoral neck fractures. METHODS: Ten Landrace pigs were used as experimental animal models. The femoral head was completely removed after femoral neck sub-cephalic fracture. It was fixed on the medial side of the knee joint, and the blood supply to the femoral head

Place specificity of the click-evoked auditory brainstem response in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Cochlear place specificity of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was investigated in five bottlenose dolphins by measuring ABRs to broadband clicks presented simultaneously with masking noise having various high-pass cutoff frequencies. Click and noise stimuli were digitally compensated to account for the transmitting response of the piezoelectric transducers and any multipath propagation effects to achieve "white" or "pink" spectral characteristics. Narrowband evoked responses were derived by sequentially subtracting responses obtained with noise at lower high-pass cutoff frequencies from

Vascular imaging of the mesenteric vasculature.

Imaging of the mesenteric vasculature is crucial in diagnosing vascular disease of the gastro-intestinal tract such as acute or chronic mesenteric ischemia caused by arterial stenosis, embolism or thrombosis, mesenteric vein thrombosis and mesenteric aneurysm or dissection. The reference standard for imaging of the mesenteric vasculature is digital subtraction angiography. However, modalities as duplex ultrasonography, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography are developing rapidly and may provide accurate imaging non-invasively. This review provides an up-to-date ove

[Gadolinium digital cavography with ultrasound guidance in renal failure: report of 2 cases].

Iodine-induced renal failure is a major concern when considering angiography in patients with renal insufficiency. Previous studies have shown that gadolinium can perform well as a radiographic contrast agent and is not nephrotoxic at doses < or = 0.4 mmol/kg. We report high-quality images of the inferior vena cava, obtained by digital subtracted venography using power-injected gadodiamide through the common femoral vein. This technique, in combination with ultrasound, appears as a good alternative for insertion of vena cava filters in patients with renal failure or those with prior episodes o

Partial splenic embolization guided by blood flow measurements.

The author used blood flow measurements to guide partial splenic embolization procedures in five patients. The measurements were obtained by time density analysis of contrast medium injections in the splenic artery using digital subtraction angiographic techniques and modified software. The blood flow measurements demonstrated blood flow changes occurring as a result of the embolization. The embolization procedures continued until the blood flow in the splenic artery had been reduced to 50% of its original value. The blood flow measurements appear to predict the amount of parenchymal reduction
