Saxitoxin-producing Raphidiopsis raciborskii (cyanobacteria) inhibits swimming and physiological parameters in Daphnia similis.

In this study we tested the effects of a neurotoxic strain of the cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii (CYRF-01) on the swimming activity and physiological parameters of Daphnia similis such as movements of the antennae, thoracic limbs, post-abdominal claw and heart rate. An acute assay was performed to test the effect on swimming activity, exposing newborns (<24 h) to different concentrations of live cells and observing the number of immobilized animals over a period of 48 h. For testing the effects on physiological parameters adult females (10-15 days) were exposed in a flow-through syste…

Acute changes in serum immune markers due to swimming in a chlorinated pool.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to disinfectants and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) due to swimming in chlorinated water has been associated with allergic and respiratory health effects, including asthma. OBJECTIVES: Biological mechanisms contributing to these associations are largely unknown. We hypothesized a potential pathway involving modulation of the immune system. METHODS: We assessed levels of immune markers (CCL11, CCL22, CXCL10, CRP, EGF, GCSF, IL-8, IL-17, IL-1RA, MPO, VEGF, Periostin) in serum collected from 30 women and 29 men before and after 40min of swimming in a chlorinated pool. Expos…

The swimming test is effective for evaluating spasticity after contusive spinal cord injury.

Spasticity is a frequent chronic complication in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the severity of spasticity varies in patients with SCI. Therefore, an evaluation method is needed to determine the severity of spasticity. We used a contusive SCI model that is suitable for clinical translation. In this study, we examined the feasibility of the swimming test and an EMG for evaluating spasticity in a contusive SCI rat model. Sprague-Dawley rats received an injury at the 8th thoracic vertebra. Swimming tests were performed 3 to 6 weeks after SCI induction. We placed the SCI rats …

Detection and quantification of human adenovirus genomes in Acanthamoeba isolated from swimming pools.

Acanthamoeba is the most common free-living environmental amoeba, it may serve as an important vehicle for various microorganisms living in the same environment, such as viruses, being pathogenic to humans. This study aimed to detect and quantify human adenoviruses (HAdV) in Acanthamoebas isolated from water samples collected from swimming pools in the city of Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil. Free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba were isolated from water samples, and isolates (n=16) were used to investigate the occurrence of HAdVs. HAdV detection was performed by quantitative real-time p…

Antidepressant-like effects of Perilla frutescens seed oil during a forced swimming test.

Unipolar depressive disorder may become one of the major leading causes of disease burden by 2030 according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Thus, the discovery of antidepressive foods is attractive and could have considerable impacts worldwide. We investigated the antidepressant-like effects of Perilla frutescens seed oil on adult male rats subjected to a forced swimming test (FST). Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were housed and fed various diets, including soybean oil-rich, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-rich, and P. frutescens seed oil-rich diets for 6 weeks. After the dietary intervention, …

Built for rowing: frog muscle is tuned to limb morphology to power swimming.

Rowing is demanding, in part, because drag on the oars increases as the square of their speed. Hence, as muscles shorten faster, their force capacity falls, whereas drag rises. How do frogs resolve this dilemma to swim rapidly? We predicted that shortening velocity cannot exceed a terminal velocity where muscle and fluid torques balance. This terminal velocity, which is below Vmax, depends on gear ratio (GR = outlever/inlever) and webbed foot area. Perhaps such properties of swimmers are 'tuned', enabling shortening speeds of approximately 0.3Vmax for maximal power. Predictions were tested usi

Characterization of a virulent Leptospira interrogans strain isolated from an abandoned swimming pool.

Pathogenic Leptospira spp. are the etiological agents of leptospirosis, an important disease of both humans and animals. In urban settings, L. interrogans serovars are the predominant cause of disease in humans. The purpose of this study was to characterize a novel Leptospira isolate recovered from an abandoned swimming pool. Molecular characterization through sequencing of the rpoB gene revealed 100% identity with L. interrogans and variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis resulted in a banding pattern identical to L. interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae, serovar Copenhageni or Icte…

Swimming pool contact dermatitis caused by 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethyl hydantoin.

BACKGROUND: Bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH) is a chemical used as a disinfectant for recreational water. BCDMH was described as being responsible for an epidemic of irritant contact dermatitis in the UK (1983), and its sensitizing capacity was also discussed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether BCDMH used to disinfect swimming pools and spas can cause allergic contact dermatitis among its users. METHODS: Ten patients suffering from dermatitis associated with using swimming pools disinfected with BCDMH and 40 controls were studied. Several dilutions of BCDMH, …

Antidepressant effect of GABA-rich monascus-fermented product on forced swimming rat model.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) has several well-known physiological functions including antihypertension and antidepression. In this research, we focus on the antidepressant effects of oral administration of GABA-rich Monascus-fermented product in depression animal model (forced swimming test, FST) by Sprague-Dawley rats, and try to find its possible mechanism in the brain monoamine system. GABA and the Monascus-fermented product (MFP) significantly decreased the duration of immobility time in a short-term test. In a long-term test, the antidepressant-like effect of MFP was better than that of GAB…

Pharmacological mechanisms of antidepressant-like effect of tipepidine in the forced swimming test.

We previously reported that the centrally acting non-narcotic antitussive, tipepidine, produces a novel antidepressant-like effect in the forced swimming test in rats, but the mechanism of the antidepressant-like effect of tipepidine is not clear. We investigated the pharmacological mechanism of the antidepressant-like effect of tipepidine in the forced swimming test in rats. A catecholamine-depleting agent, alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (AMPT; 300 mg/kg, s.c.), was given 6h before the first injection and with the last injection of tipepidine (40 mg/kg, i.p.). A serotonin (5-HT)-depleting agent, p-c…

Sperm swimming velocity predicts competitive fertilization success in the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri.

Sperm competition is expected to favour the evolution of traits that influence the performance of sperm when they compete to fertilize a fem … g fish. We use artificial insemination as a method of controlled sperm delivery and show that sperm swimming velocity is the primary determinant of fertilization success when ejaculates from two males compete to fertilize a female's eggs. By contrast, we found no evidence that sperm length had any effect on siring success. We also found no evidence that pr …

Aeromonas hydrophila folliculitis associated with an inflatable swimming pool: mimicking Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

Aeromonas species are ubiquitous, facultative, anaerobic, gram-negative flagellated rods, mainly found in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Skin and soft-tissue infections, including cellulitis and wound infections, are the second most frequent location of isolations of Aeromonas spp. in clinical samples, after the gastrointestinal tract. All three major Aeromonas species (A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veroni biotype sobria) have been associated with wound infections, but A. hydrophila predominates. Typically, infection occurs after trauma and subsequent exposure to contaminated fresh water or

Aggression and 5HTT polymorphism in females: study of synchronized swimming and control groups.

Aggression is a heterogeneous heritable psychological trait, also influenced by environmental factors. Previous studies, mostly conducted on male population, have found some associations of the aggression with the polymorphisms of genes, regulating the activity of serotonin (5-HT) in the brain. However, psychological as well as biochemical manifestations of the aggression are different in males and females. Our study aimed to investigate the association of 5-HTT gene polymorphism with different facets of aggression (BDHI) in females. Two groups: the synchronized swimming and non-athlete contro…

Potentially human pathogenic Acanthamoeba isolated from a heated indoor swimming pool in Switzerland.

Some free-living amoebae, including some species of the genus Acanthamoeba, can cause infections in humans and animals. These organisms are known to cause granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE) in predominantly immune-deficient persons. In the present study, we isolated a potentially human pathogenic Acanthamoeba isolate originating from a public heated indoor swimming pool in Switzerland. The amoebae, thermophilically preselected by culture at 37 degrees C, subsequently displayed a high thermotolerance, being able to grow at 42 degrees C, and a marked cytotoxicity, based on a co-culture syst…

Dynamic changes in body form during swimming in the water snake Nerodia sipedon.

Video records of swimming water snakes show that during moderate to rapid swimming, the rear half to two-thirds of the trunk is compressed laterally, approaching the body form of some sea snakes. Body form of swimming snakes differed significantly from their shape when resting on a flat surface or when anesthetized and suspended in water. The extent of lateral flattening is positively correlated with swimming speed, a relationship generally supported by tests of trunk models in a flow tank. In Nerodia, the ability to temporarily flatten the trunk depends on kinetic costovertebral joints, a lar…

Hypergravity susceptibility of ventral root activity during fictive swimming in tadpoles (Xenopus laevis).

1. Fictive swimming is an experimental model to study early motor development. As vestibular activity also affects the development of spinal motor projections, the present study focused on the question whether in Xenopus laevis tadpoles, the rhythmic activity of spinal ventral roots (VR) during fictive swimming revealed age-dependent modifications after hypergravity exposure. In addition, developmental characteristics for various features of fictive swimming between stages 37/38 and 47 were determined. Parameters of interest were duration of fictive swimming episodes, burst duration, burst fre…
