The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems constitute the autonomic nervous system which controls the entropy of the body and maintain the equilibrium. The sympathetic chain forms a definitive anatomic entity which is quite variable with respect to its position and the number of ganglia. The sympathetic nervous system causes vasoconstriction and thus forms the basis of Lumbar sympathetic surgeries being performed in patients with peripheral vascular diseases. The anatomic variations in this region hence gains immense importance for the operating surgeons and consulting radiologists. I…

The immune system response and inflammation play a key role in brain injury during and after a stroke. The acute immune response is responsible for secondary brain tissue damage immediately after the stroke, followed by immunosuppression due to sympathetic nervous system activation. The latter increases risk of infection complications, such as pneumonia. The pneumonia-related inflammatory state can release a bystander autoimmune response against central nervous system antigens, thereby initiating a vicious circle. The aim of this review is to summarize the relationship between ischemic stroke,…

Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is involved in the mechanisms of blood pressure elevation, organ fibrosis, and inflammation. MR antagonists have been used in patients with hypertension, heart failure, or chronic kidney disease. Esaxerenone, a recently approved MR blocker with a nonsteroidal structure, has demonstrated a strong blood pressure-lowering effect. However, blood pressure reduction may lead to sympathetic activation through the baroreflex. The effect of esaxerenone on the sympathetic nervous system remains unclear. We investigated the effect of esaxerenone on organ damage and the sym…

Based on the relevance of the renin-angiotensin system and the ongoing controversy regarding the role of the sympathetic nervous system in thyroid hormone-induced cardiac hypertrophy, the aim of the present study was to establish whether the putative difference in the degree of cardiac hypertrophy exhibited by males and females might be related to differences in the sympathetic-vagal balance and/or in the cardiac renin-angiotensin system in mice of different genders. Male and female mice (n = 117) were given 0.1 mg kg(-1) of triiodothyronine or normal saline each day for 10 days consecutively.…

As much as one third of patients with arterial hypertension are treatment refractory as they do not reach sufficient blood pressure control despite antihypertensive combination therapy of significant duration. In patients with therapy-resistant hypertension, the kidneys play a central role as activator of the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous activation via efferent nerve fibers lying in the adventitia of the renal arteries leads to increased Na(+) reabsorption, increased renin secretion and reduction of renal plasma flow. Via afferent sympathetic fibers in the dorsal root of the…

The sympathetic nervous system is known to play a pivotal role in the short- and long-term regulation of different cardiovascular functions. In recent decades, increasing evidence has demonstrated that sympathetic neural influences are involved not only in the vasomotor modulation of small resistance arteries but also in the control of large arteries. Sympathetic activity and vascular function, which are key factors in the pathophysiology and prognosis of cardiovascular disease, are linked by a close relationship. Evidence from experimental studies indicates that the sympathetic nervous system…

Serotonin (5-HT) is an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system where it modulates circuits involved in mood, cognition, movement, arousal, and autonomic function. The 5-HT transporter (SERT; SLC6A4) is a key regulator of 5-HT signaling, and genetic variations in SERT are associated with various disorders including depression, anxiety, and autism. This review focuses on the role of SERT in the sympathetic nervous system. Autonomic/sympathetic dysfunction is evident in patients with depression, anxiety, and other diseases linked to serotonergic signaling. Experimentally, loss of…

Longlasting overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system can be considered as one of the causes of the hypermetabolism developing in patients with head injury or tetanus. In tetanus elevated plasma levels of catecholamines can be demonstrated as long as disturbances of the motor nervous system are present. In patients with head injury the plasma catecholamines, mainly noradrenaline, start to increase with the onset of the transition stage from midbrain syndrome to the apallic syndrome. The activity of the sympathetic nervous system remains elevated also in the full stage of the apallic syndr…

The autonomic nervous system (ANS), comprised of two primary branches, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, plays an essential role in the regulation of vascular wall contractility and tension. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves work together to balance the functions of autonomic effector organs. The neurotransmitters released from the varicosities in the ANS can regulate the vascular tone. Norepinephrine (NE), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and Neuropeptide Y (NPY) function as vasoconstrictors, whereas acetylcholine (Ach) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) can mediate…

The mammary gland is a dynamic organ that undergoes significant changes at multiple stages of postnatal development. Although the roles of systemic hormones and microenvironmental cues in mammary homeostasis have been extensively studied, the influence of neural signals, particularly those from the sympathetic nervous system, remains poorly understood. Here, using a mouse mammary gland model, we delved into the regulatory role of sympathetic nervous signaling in the context of mammary stem cells and mammary development. Our findings revealed that depletion of sympathetic nerve signals results …

c-ret encodes a tyrosine kinase receptor that is necessary for normal development of the mammalian enteric nervous system. Germline mutations in c-ret lead to congenital megacolon in humans, while a loss-of-function allele (ret.k-) causes intestinal aganglionosis in mice. Here we examine in detail the function of c-ret during neurogenesis, as well as the lineage relationships among cell populations in the enteric nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system that are dependent on c-ret function. We report that, while the intestine of newborn ret.k- mice is devoid of enteric ganglia, the es…

UNLABELLED: Sympathetic nervous system activity is increased after cardiopulmonary arrest, resulting in vasoconstrictor release from the perivascular sympathetic nerves of cerebral arteries. However, the pathophysiological function of the perivascular sympathetic nerves in the ischemic brain remains unclear. A rat model of global cerebral ischemia (asphyxial cardiac arrest, ACA) was used to investigate perivascular sympathetic nerves of cerebral arteries via bilateral decentralization (preganglionic lesion) of the superior cervical ganglion (SCG). Decentralization of the SCG 5 days before ACA …

Growing evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in cancer progression. Adrenergic innervation regulates salivary gland secretion, circadian rhythm, macular degeneration, immune function, and cardiac physiology. Murine surgical sympathectomy is a method for studying the effects of adrenergic innervation by allowing for complete, unilateral adrenergic ablation while avoiding the need for repeated pharmacologic intervention and the associated side effects. However, surgical sympathectomy in mice is technically challenging because of the small size of the supe…

Resistant hypertension, defined as the failure to achieve target blood pressure despite concurrent use of 3 antihypertensive agents of different classes, is estimated to affect 20-30% of hypertensive patients. These patients are vulnerable to cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and renal complications. There is ample evidence that sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity contributes to the initiation, maintenance and progression of hypertension. The renal sympathetic nervous system, in particular, has been identified as a major culprit for the development and progression of hypertension, heart fai…

Many concepts about acute and chronic effects of stress depend on alterations in sympathetic nerves supplying the heart. Physiologic, pharmacologic, and neurochemical approaches have been used to evaluate cardiac sympathetic function. This article describes a fourth approach that is based on nuclear scanning to visualize cardiac sympathetic innervation and function and relationships between the neuroimaging findings and those from other approaches. Multiple-system atrophy with orthostatic hypotension (formerly the Shy-Drager syndrome) features normal cardiac sympathetic innervation and normal

This review summarizes recent progress in the knowledge of catecholamines in cirrhosis. Compensated patients have normal plasma concentration of noradrenaline. Highly elevated plasma noradrenaline concentration in decompensated patients indicates that the sympathetic nervous system is enhanced in this condition. This may especially apply to the sympathetic tone in the kidney, as evaluated by regional measurements of noradrenaline overflow. Hepatic elimination of catecholamines is only slightly reduced. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system seems to play an important role in the avid sod…

Sympathetic nervous system plays a pivotal role in essential hypertension and in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy. Moreover, cardiac sympathetic dys-regulation has been demonstrated as a key con-causal factor in the genesis and progression of pathologic conditions such as congestive heart failure and ischemic heart disease to which hypertension predisposes as a risk factor. However, despite its fundamental role in cardiac pathophysiology, the evaluation of cardiac sympathetic nervous system has never gained a wide clinical application, remaining mostly a research tool. In this c…

Involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is relatively common in some neurodegenerative proteinopathies of the brain and may be pathogenetically and diagnostically important. In Parkinson's disease, neuronal alpha-synuclein aggregates are distributed throughout the nervous system, including the central nervous system (CNS), sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system, cardiac and pelvic plexuses, submandibular gland, adrenal medulla and skin. The pathological process may target the PNS and CNS at the same time. In multiple system atrophy, numerous glial cytoplasmic inclusions compose

The most common complication of herpes zoster in immunocompetent patients is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Sympathetic blocks have been traditionally used for patients with herpes zoster and PHN with three different therapeutic goals: pain relief during acute herpes zoster, pain relief during PHN, and prevention of PHN by treating patients with acute zoster. The role of sympathetic blocks in herpes zoster and PHN remains controversial due to methodologic shortcomings in published studies and the limited current understanding of the role of the sympathetic nervous system in mediating pain. Curr…
