Neurocognitive characterizations of Russian heroin addicts without a significant history of other drug use.

Research on the neurocognitive characteristics of heroin addiction is sparse and studies that do exist include polydrug abusers; thus, they are unable to distinguish neurocognitive effects of heroin from those of other drugs. To identify neurocognitive correlates specific to heroin addiction, the present study was conducted in St. Petersburg, Russia where individuals typically abuse and/or become addicted to only one substance, generally alcohol or heroin. Heroin addicts were recruited from an inpatient treatment facility in St. Petersburg. Three comparison groups included alcoholics, addicts

Breaking Down the Coercive Cycle: How Parent and Child Risk Factors Influence Real-Time Variability in Parental Responses to Child Misbehavior.

OBJECTIVE: Parent-child coercive cycles have been associated with both rigidity and inconsistency in parenting behavior. To explain these mixed findings, we examined real-time variability in maternal responses to children's off-task behavior to determine whether this common trigger of the coercive cycle (responding to child misbehavior) is associated with rigidity or inconsistency in parenting. We also examined the effects of risk factors for coercion (maternal hostility, maternal depressive symptoms, child externalizing problems, and dyadic negativity) on patterns of parenting. DESIGN: Mothe

Addition lens alleviates reading-induced ocular stress.

BACKGROUND: Near tasks have been associated with binocular stress to induce myopia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of accommodation on reading-induced near heterophoria. METHODS: We measured the near heterophoria of 22 young adults before and after 30 minutes of reading. The reading task comprised a column of local English newsletter studied monocularly at 33 cm. One of three addition lenses (that is, 0.00 D, +1.50 D and +3.00 D) was randomly incorporated into the optical prescription. The difference in near heterophoria between the pre- and post-reading task was recorded

Cognitive Inflexibility in OCD and Related Disorders.

Cognitive inflexibility is suggested by the hallmark symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), namely the occurrence of repetitive thoughts and/or behaviours that persist despite being functionally impairing and egodystonic to the individual. As well as being implied by the top-level symptoms, cognitive inflexibility in OCD, and some related conditions, has also been objectively quantified in case-control studies using computerised cognitive tasks. This chapter begins by considering the objective measurement of different aspects of cognitive flexibility using neuropsychological paradigm

Mobility-Related Gaze Training in Individuals With Glaucoma: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

PURPOSE: Older adults with glaucoma show inappropriate gaze strategies during routine mobility tasks. Furthermore, glaucoma is a risk factor for falling and colliding with objects when walking. However, effective interventions to rectify these strategies and prevent these adverse events are scarce. We designed a gaze training program with the goal of providing proof-of-concept that we could modify mobility-related gaze behavior in this population. METHODS: A total of 13 individuals with moderate glaucoma participated in this study. We taught participants general and task-specific gaze strateg

From gains to losses: Age-related differences in decisions under risk in a non-monetary gambling task.

Lifespan theory suggests a shift from a primary orientation towards attaining gains in young adulthood to preventing losses in older adulthood. The current research tested if this motivational shift is reflected in behavioural and emotional responses to risks in non-monetary gains and losses. Study 1 established in a sample of N = 168 younger (18-30 years) and older adults (65-79 years) that a non-monetary gambling task was experienced similarly by the age groups with respect to arousal and valence of the task, and the willingness to continue playing. In Study 2 (N = 83), differences between y

Explosive Quadriceps Strength Symmetry and Landing Mechanics Limb Symmetry After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Females.

CONTEXT: Emerging evidence suggests that a lower quadriceps rate of torque development (RTD) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) may be associated with altered landing mechanics. However, the influence of quadriceps RTD magnitude and limb symmetry on landing mechanics limb symmetry remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of quadriceps RTD magnitude and limb symmetry on limb symmetry in sagittal-plane landing mechanics during functional landing tasks in females with or without ACLR. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PA

Impairment in the behavioral control of body sway, gaze shift, and mental workload in Parkinson's disease.

We tested Parkinson's disease (PD)-related impairments in the relationship between gaze shifts, body sway and mental workload while performing visual tasks in the standing position. Nineteen on-drug PD patients (Hoehn and Yahr I-II; MDS-UPDRS score part III: 23.37 ± 2.79) and twenty age-matched controls explored large images (visual angle: 100°) and performed a search task (location of targets within images) as well as a free-viewing (control) task. To collect kinematic data, all participants wore body markers (lower back, upper back and head) and an eye tracker. PD patients showed a higher am

Rightward shift in spatial awareness with declining alertness.

Although transient neglect of contralesional space occurs following damage to either hemisphere, persistent forms are overwhelmingly associated with right hemisphere lesions. This has led to the suggestion that impairments in other right hemisphere systems--in particular those that mediate alertness--may undermine recovery. Reductions in neglect severity with stimulation, exacerbation with sedatives and the poor performance of chronic neglect patients on sustained attention tasks are consistent with this view. However, the question of whether changes in alertness exert a specific influence ove

Evidence for the efficacy of theta-burst stimulation above the angular gyrus for reducing mind wandering propensity: A successful pre-registered study.

Mind wandering (MW) is a common mental phenomenon where attention shifts spontaneously from an external task to internal trains of thought. Recent studies propose that non-invasive brain stimulation methods hold potential for influencing attentional shifts between on-task and MW states. Exploratory analysis from a recent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) study reported that targeting the left angular gyrus (AG) with continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) reduced MW compared to sham stimulation, without affecting executive performance (Drevland et al., 2025). The present st

MEG imaging of recurrent gliomas reveals functional plasticity of hemispheric language specialization.

In patients with gliomas, changes in hemispheric specialization for language determined by magnetoencephalography (MEG) were analyzed to elucidate the impact of treatment and tumor recurrence on language networks. Demonstration of reorganization of language networks in these patients has significant implications on the prevention of postoperative functional loss and recovery. Whole-brain activity during an auditory verb generation task was estimated from MEG recordings in a group of 73 patients with recurrent gliomas. Hemisphere of language dominance was estimated using the language laterality

Tissue pressure management in the vocational setting.

A significant problem that confronts a spinal cord injured person who returns to work is how to design the work station and tasks so that pressure sores do not develop and compromise the worker's productivity. In this study, reach was investigated as a mechanism to cause weight shift during task execution. It is shown that by using an extended reach motion, it is possible to cause effective weight redistribution. By incorporating this type of motion in task design for mobility impaired workers, it should be possible to reduce their risk of developing pressure sores with a minimal effect on job

Why one task is not enough: functional MRI for atypical language organization in two children.

Functional MRI is increasingly used to determine the hemispheric dominance for language. This is especially relevant in children who may not be able to comply with the high demands of a Wada test. We here report on two children in which the full extent of language reorganization was only determined when two fMRI tasks were analyzed; in the first case, the results from the second task corroborated the shifted hemispheric dominance seen in the first task. In the second case, the second task showed an opposite hemispheric dominance, suggesting a hemispheric dissociation of language functions. The

Work Tasks as Determinants of Respirable and Inhalable Indium Exposure among Workers at an Indium-Tin Oxide Production and Reclamation Facility.

Increased global demand for touch screens, photovoltaics, and optoelectronics has resulted in an increase in the production of indium-tin oxide (ITO). Occupational exposure to indium compounds is associated with the development of indium lung disease. Although many previous epidemiologic investigations highlight an excess of lung abnormalities in workplaces where ITO is produced, few assessments of occupational exposure to respirable and inhalable indium are reported to date. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of respirable and inhalable indium at an ITO production fa

A type II hybrid implementation-effectiveness study of the BECOME intervention: integrating Behavioral Community-Based Approaches for Mental Health and Non-Communicable Diseases delivered by community health workers-study protocol for a stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Common mental health conditions (CMHCs) such as depression and anxiety often co-occur with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like hypertension and diabetes, compounding disability and mortality particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with under-resourced health systems. This comorbidity is driven by shared behavioral risk factors including stress, isolation, tobacco use, inactivity, poor diet, and nonadherence to treatment. The World Health Organization recommends evidence-based stress reduction (EBSR), behavioral activation (BA), and motivational interviewing (MI)

The role of the anterior temporal cortex in action: evidence from fMRI multivariate searchlight analysis during real object grasping.

Intelligent manipulation of handheld tools marks a major discontinuity between humans and our closest ancestors. Here we identified neural representations about how tools are typically manipulated within left anterior temporal cortex, by shifting a searchlight classifier through whole-brain real action fMRI data when participants grasped 3D-printed tools in ways considered typical for use (i.e., by their handle). These neural representations were automatically evocated as task performance did not require semantic processing. In fact, findings from a behavioural motion-capture experiment confir

Reduced parietal to frontal functional connectivity for dynamic balance in late middle-to-older adults.

In this study, we investigated the changes in functional connectivity between cortical regions for balance control during a challenging balance task with advancing age. Fourteen young and fourteen late middle-to-older adults performed a challenging balance task that manipulated somatosensory information while their brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography. Both groups showed common activation regions within the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and premotor cortex (PMC) during the balance task. The late middle-to-older group showed significantly weaker PCC to PMC functional conn

Extended Work Shifts and Neurobehavioral Performance in Resident-Physicians.

OBJECTIVES: Extended-duration work rosters (EDWRs) with shifts of 24+ hours impair performance compared with rapid cycling work rosters (RCWRs) that limit shifts to 16 hours in postgraduate year (PGY) 1 resident-physicians. We examined the impact of a RCWR on PGY 2 and PGY 3 resident-physicians. METHODS: Data from 294 resident-physicians were analyzed from a multicenter clinical trial of 6 US PICUs. Resident-physicians worked 4-week EDWRs with shifts of 24+ hours every third or fourth shift, or an RCWR in which most shifts were ≤16 consecutive hours. Participants completed a daily sleep and w

Loss of Cognitive Flexibility Practice Effects in Female Rats Exposed to Simulated Space Radiation.

During the planned missions to Mars, astronauts will be faced with many potential health hazards including prolonged exposure to space radiation. Ground-based studies have shown that exposure to space radiation impairs the performance of male rats in cognitive flexibility tasks which involve processes that are essential to rapidly and efficiently adapting to different situations. However, there is presently a paucity of information on the effects of space radiation on cognitive flexibility in female rodents. This study has determined the impact that exposure to a low (10 cGy) dose of ions from

Executive functioning in adolescents with internalizing disorders: a systematic review.

Internalizing disorders (INTs), including anxiety (AD) and depressive disorders (DD), frequently emerge during adolescence. Studies suggest that certain core domains of executive functioning (EF), i.e. inhibition, shifting and working memory (WM) may show selectively lower performance in certain INTs. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the evidence of associations between INTs and EF in adolescents. A systematic search was conducted in Medline, Psych-INFO, Scopus, and Web of Science in May 2023. Inclusion focused on adolescents (12-17) with AD (including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OC
