This study aimed to test the efficacy of cupping therapy to improve symptoms and quality of life in patients diagnosed with the fibromyalgia syndrome. Participants were randomly assigned to cupping therapy, sham or usual care. Cupping was administered five times at twice weekly intervals on the upper and lower back. The primary outcome measure was pain intensity at day 18. Secondary outcomes included functional disability, quality of life, fatigue and sleep quality as well as pressure pain sensitivity, satisfaction and safety at day 18 and 6 months. Altogether 141 patients were included in thi

The authors have found that for best results, a wearing time of 1 hour 3 to 4 times a day is desired. Similar to many splints designed to increase range of motion, there is some functional loss during wearing time. Application of the splint should be scheduled appropriately around functional activities. Based on clinical experience, the authors have found this splint is easy to fabricate, cost-effective, and relatively comfortable.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare tumors arising from the connective tissues. STS can arise at any anatomic site, can demonstrate varied behavior and prognosis, and therefore present a formidable challenge in management. The local treatment of STS demands technical complexity in the application of diagnostic tools, including pathology and imaging, as well as treatment approaches, including surgical ablation and reconstruction, radiotherapy, and, in defined cases, chemotherapy. The understanding of the management of these lesions is profoundly dependent on the multidisciplinary setting, where

Soft palate stiffening operations--often with CO2 or contact Nd:YAG lasers--have been used recently to treat patients with pronounced snoring. Differences in soft palate scars formed after CO2 and contact Nd:YAG laser incisions were studied in an animal model to determine which of these lasers produces a more rigid scar and consequently might be more effective for a soft palate stiffening operation. Six mongrel dogs were placed in each laser group, after which either the CO2 or Nd:YAG laser was used to make a 1.5-cm-long soft palate incision. The scars produced were then excised and studied hi

BACKGROUND: Implantology is becoming increasingly digital, opening up new therapy options to achieve preferably predictable and complication-free results. One key parameter for success seems to be stable and fixed soft tissue around the implant as well as the prosthodontic supply. The concept presented in this article aims for an anatoform and stable emergence profile around implants in a digital workflow applying individual polyetheretherketone (PEEK) healing abutments.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old female patient presented to the Department of Prosthodontics at the Center for Dentistry a

Corticosteroid injection into the first dorsal compartment for acute de Quervain's tenosynovitis is an accepted form of therapy. Potential side effects include soft-tissue atrophy, tendon attrition, postinjection neuritis of the superficial radial nerve, systemic reactions, and infection. We present a patient with a Mycobacterium chelonei infection localized to the soft tissue overlying the first dorsal compartment, occurring 3 years after a triamcinolone injection into this area. Histological examination with the polarizing microscope revealed persistent steroid granules in the involved tissu

Since the original description of spondyloarthritis 50 years ago, results have demonstrated similarities and differences between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and axial psoriatic arthritis (PsA). HLA-B27 gene carriage in axial inflammation is linked to peri-fibrocartilaginous sacroiliac joint osteitis, as well as to spinal peri-entheseal osteitis, which is often extensive and which provides a crucial anatomical and immunological differentiation between the AS and PsA phenotypes. Specifically, HLA-B27-related diffuse bone marrow oedema (histologically an osteitis) and bone marrow fatty corners de

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the efficiency of a preconditioning programme composed of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in the protection against muscle damage induced by a subsequent bout of NMES.
METHODS: Sixteen male volunteers were split up into a control group (CG; n = 8) and a preconditioned group (PCG; n = 8). Both groups attended two NMES bouts (test 1 and test 2) spaced 5 weeks apart. Each one consisted in 100 quadriceps contractions and 100 hamstrings contractions. PCG attended five additional progressive NMES sessions between test 1 and test 2. The outco

The goal of periodontal plastic surgery is to correct the soft-tissue deformities associated with the loss of attached and keratinized tissue. A variety of flap manipulations related to the use of subepithelial connective tissue grafts are described with great success in the literature but are linked with morbidity and harvesting-quality issues, inclining clinicians and researchers to find alternatives to such techniques. Advanced platelet-rich fibrin, which is widely used in medicine and oral therapy, represents a newer generation of blood-derived growth factors. This article discusses a simp

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a kind of rapidly destructive soft tissue infection with an unfavorable prognosis. It is usually caused by highly virulent bacteria. Recently, the incidence of NF caused by atypical opportunistic pathogens has been increasing. Aeromonas dhakensis is increasingly emerging as a new, highly virulent, biofilm-producing, and multidrug resistant cause of soft tissue infection. The current strains of A. dhakensis are causing increasingly severe disease, with delayed diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of NF caused by A. dhakensi

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac metastasis is a highly life-threatening condition because it leads to cardiac failure. However, it is difficult to diagnose because its precise clinical features are unknown. Here, we report 11 cases of cardiac metastasis from soft-tissue sarcoma, and discuss its diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: Of 641 patients with soft-tissue sarcoma treated in our institute between 1996 and 2009, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 11 patients whose cardiac metastases were diagnosed while they were alive.
RESULTS: The most common primary tumor was leiomyosarcoma (n= 5),

PURPOSE: Localized adult high-grade soft tissue sarcomas (STS) usually require multimodality treatment including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hyperthermia. If maximal preoperative tumor-shrinkage is envisaged, neoadjuvant chemotherapy + radiation (CRT) is often applied, however at the expense of relatively high toxicities and increased postoperative complication rates. This study aims to compare preoperative CRT with neoadjuvant chemotherapy + regional hyperthermia (HCT) regarding histopathological response, toxicity and outcome.
METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, 61 consecut

Acute pancreatitis can be complicated with necrosis of the pancreatic or peripancreatic tissue. This necrosis can become liquified and form a well-defined wall (walled-off necrosis or WON) and can become infected and form abscesses. Necrotizing soft tissue infections are rare infections of the deep tissue and subcutaneous fat and are mostly caused by trauma or perforated visceral organs. They can, however, rarely be caused by infected retroperitoneal collections. To date only 3 case reports have been published of a necrotizing soft tissue infection complicating a necrotizing pancreatitis. Both

Candida parapsilosis is an emerging pathogen worldwide. It commonly causes soft tissue infection; however, to our knowledge there has been no previous report of monomicrobial necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) secondary to C. parapsilosis. We report the first case of NSTI caused by C. parapsilosis in an immunocompromised renal transplant patient, with the diagnosis proven both histologically and microbiologically. Our patient required aggressive surgical intervention and antifungal therapy, with postoperative survival at 90 days.

Soft tissue gas gangrene with myonecrosis is a severe complication of traumatic and non-traumatic conditions with a potentially lethal outcome. Emphysematous cholecystitis is a complication of acute cholecystitis, which is characterized by air accumulation in the gallbladder wall and is reported in the literature as a rare causative factor of soft tissue gas gangrene. Here we report 4 patients who developed soft tissue gas gangrene as a complication of emphysematous cholecystitis. Two patients were female octogenarians (one with a history of diabetes mellitus), and underwent percutaneous trans

BACKGROUND: Findings from previous experiments have revealed that inflammatory cell infiltrates may remain in the gingiva following clinically successful non-surgical periodontal therapy.
PURPOSE: To investigate the presence of inflammatory lesions in the gingiva following a periodontal treatment procedure that included either soft-tissue resection [gingivectomy (GV)] or non-resective open-flap debridement (OFD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with advanced generalized chronic periodontitis were recruited. Following oral hygiene instruction and supragingival debridement, one tooth si

Coverage of soft tissue defects in the upper extremity caused by infection and debridement of infected tissue is a challenging problem. Treatment starts with prompt identification and eradication of infection, including antibiotics and extensive debridement. Optimizing the patient's medical and nutritional status can facilitate eradication of infection and wound healing. Coverage of soft tissue defects caused by infection and debridement demands consideration of many factors. Options include healing by primary or secondary intention, skin grafts, local flaps, and distant flaps. Negative pressu
