Novel homozygous PANK2 mutation identified in a consanguineous Chinese pedigree with pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration.

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder resulting from pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2) gene mutations. It is clinically characterized by early onset of extrapyramidal symptoms, with or without pigmentary retinopathy, optic atrophy and acanthocytosis. The specific radiographic appearance of PKAN is the eye-of-the-tiger sign. However, there are few studies regarding PKAN patients of Chinese Han ancestry. In the present study, a Chinese 20-year-old female with an 8-year history of unsteady walking and involuntary movements is

Occurrence of de novo hepatocellular carcinoma after successful direct-acting antiviral therapy in patients without cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli is an important intestinal flora, of which pathogenic E. coli is capable of causing many enteric and extra-intestinal diseases. Antibiotics are essential for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by pathogenic E. coli; however, with the widespread use of antibiotics, drug resistance in E. coli has become particularly serious, posing a global threat to human, animal, and environmental health. While the drug resistance and pathogenicity of E. coli carried by tigers and leopards in captivity have been studied intensively in recent years, there is an extreme lac…

Observations on blood coagulation after snakebite in dogs and cats.

Blood samples from 13 cases of snakebite, 6 in dogs and 7 in cats, were tested for activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP). Four cases were tested for fibrinogen concentration. Based on the results of a commercially available ELISA test, 9 cases were caused by tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus) and 1 case by a brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis). Three other cases had clinical signs and increased creatine phosphokinase values which suggested tiger snake envenomation. Although the period post-envenomation varied, results i

Novel Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaherpesviruses in Neotropical Carnivores of Brazil.

The knowledge regarding infectious agents affecting wildlife is crucial for species' conservation. We hypothesized that herpesviruses are present in wild Neotropical carnivores. Herein, we used DNA polymerase and glycoprotein B broad-spectrum PCRs to molecularly survey the presence of herpesviruses in spleen and/or lung samples of 53 wild Neotropical carnivores of Brazil, comprising the families Canidae, Felidae, Mustelidae, and Procyonidae. The percentage of PCR-positives was 28.3% (15/53). An alphaherpesvirus was found in a Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis, 1/1), a betaherpesvirus

A study on the role of lepidopterism in seasonal fever outbreaks.

UNLABELLED: Fever is one of the most common reasons for visit in primary care practice. Outbreaks of fever that occur at certain areas in a seasonal manner are usually recognized early by diligent general practitioners in primary care settings. At the community level, in order to tackle seasonal fever outbreaks, prevention and control strategies are widely implemented, targeting the locally prevalent endemic infectious diseases. However, what about seasonal outbreaks of diseases because of non-infectious endemic causes? How well are we aware of this and how prepared are we? In 2006, there was

Adult-onset case of undiagnosed neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation with psychotic symptoms.

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a collective term to indicate a group of neurodegenerative diseases presenting accumulation of iron in the basal ganglia. These disorders can result in progressive dystonia, spasticity, parkinsonism, neuropsychiatric abnormalities, and optic atrophy or retinal degeneration. Onset age ranges from infancy to late adulthood and the rate of progression is very variable. So far, the genetic bases of nine types of NBIA have been identified, pantothenate-kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) being the most frequent type. The brain MRI "eye

[New and reemerging viral fever carriers--a threat of epidemic complications in southern Europe and Russia].

Issues of emergence and spread of viral fever and malaria carriers in non-endemic areas are discussed. The role of asian tiger mosquito global spread--a dangerous arbovirus carrier--is noted. Epidemic consequences of emergence of West Nile fever virus in the New World that is presumably connected with Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes are discussed. Rigorous monitoring and prophylaxis measures are suggested.

[Bacterial infections in felines in zoological gardens].

The significance of selected bacterial infections of felines in zoological gardens is discussed. Anthrax and malleus are in Germany of historical interest only, tuberculosis went down very strongly. Isolated cases of pseudotuberculosis must be expected in future. Infections with bacteria of the genera Chlamydia, Pasteurella and of the family Enterobacteriaceae are also considered. The significance of Clostridium perfringens in the so called tiger disease is discussed.

Immunohistochemical characterization of mesothelioma in 6 large felids.

Mesothelioma has been reported frequently in large felids. These neoplasms present a diagnostic challenge given their highly variable morphology that mimics carcinomas or sarcomas at different locations. Our goal was to characterize mesotheliomas morphologically and immunohistochemically to determine if a panel of antibodies could be used to more accurately support the diagnosis of these neoplasms in large felids. Mesotheliomas from 6 large felids, including 4 clouded leopards, 1 Bengal tiger, and 1 cheetah, were immunohistochemically labeled for vimentin, E-cadherin, pancytokeratin, Wilms tum

Ten years of snake bites at Fremantle Hospital.

Seventy-six patients (30% children) were admitted to Fremantle Hospital over 10 years with suspected snake bite. Twenty-nine patients were definitely bitten, with 26 bites being witnessed. Of the 13 patients definitely envenomated, 11 had a coagulopathy although seven were asymptomatic; four other patients may have been envenomated. The dugite (Pseudonaja affinis) was probably responsible for most envenomations. Eleven of the 13 envenomated patients received antivenom (six brown snake, four polyvalent and one tiger snake antivenom). The patient envenomated by the tiger snake (Notechis ater occ

A Challenging Case of Patent Ductus Arteriosus Device Closure in an Adult with Unconventional Views and Catheters.

Abnormally oriented patent ductus arteriosus is expected in adults, which can lead to difficulties while attempting a device closure. Alternate angiographic views like the "right anterior oblique view," "retrograde approach" and in rare cases, as elicited in the following case scenario, special catheters like the "Tiger® catheter" can aid in crossing the lesion and completion of the procedure successfully.
