Alopecia and pet: a case report.

Dermatophytoses are fungal infections affecting the skin and cutaneous annexes. This clinical case report describes a 7-year-old girl with Kerion celsi, a severe manifestation of Tinea capitis. The patient presented with painful edematous crusty scalp lesions and alopecia, which required surgical debridement and long-term antifungal treatment. Culture of samples collected from scalp and arm skin lesions (patient and patient's mother respectively) were positive for Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The family owned a pet guinea pig. This particular dermatophytosis is easily transmitted from guinea p…

First report of tinea corporis caused by Arthroderma benhamiae in Brazil.

Arthroderma benhamiae is a zoophilic dermathophyte that can cause highly inflammatory tinea corporis and tinea capitis in humans. This is the first report of a patient with dermatophytosis caused by A. benhamiae in Brazil. The lesion was an erythematous, annular plaque on the lumbar region that appeared few weeks after playing with a street cat in a 19-month-old girl. Initial presumed diagnosis was tinea corporis caused by Microsporum canis. Topical treatments were ineffective and the patient required systemic treatment with griseofulvin. Mycological diagnosis was inconclusive: morphological d…

Superficial and cutaneous fungal infections: diagnosis and treatment.

Fungal infections usually have characteristics that make them easily identifiable. In most cases, clinical diagnosis can be readily confirmed by examining the lesions under Wood's light or by placing infected material in potassium hydroxide solution and examining the preparation microscopically. Dermatophytes can be rapidly detected by culturing material on the recently developed Dermatophyte Test Medium. The development of topical antifungal agents with broad spectrums of activity has considerably simplified treatment. In most cases, culture on Sabouraud's agar to determine exact genus and sp

Whole-genome resequencing of Trichophyton rubrum provides insights into population differentiation and drug resistance.

Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) is anthropophilic fungus and thus a very common cause of dermatophyte infections around the world. Infection of T. rubrum could result in conditions such as tinea capitis, tinea corporis, tinea inguinalis, tinea manus, tinea unguium, or tinea pedis. Because of this, the resistance of T. rubrum to antifungal therapies has drawn extensive research interest. However, the pathogenic characteristics of T. rubrum, such as site of infections, geographic location and host groups, have yet to be explored. In this study, the whole genome of 48 strains from different regio…

A novel congenital ichthyosiform syndrome with associated panhypopituitarism, corneal opacities and mental retardation.

A 15-year-old male presented with ichthyosis since infancy with panhypopituitarism, short stature and knock-knees, delayed puberty, high scrotal retractile testes, mental retardation and corneal opacities. He developed recurrent tinea capitis and tinea corporis. The clinical symptomatology indicates that this case cannot be considered as a subtype of inherited ichthyosis group, but suggests a new syndrome as a separate nosologic entity. Two previously reported cases with possibly the same syndrome also had ichthyosis associated with variable endocrinopathy. Thorough endocrinological evaluation…

Efficacy and safety of itraconazole use in children.

Current dosing regimens for itraconazole are effective, safe, and versatile for use in superficial fungal infections in children, particularly tinea capitis. Good efficacy rates have been noted in both Trichophyton and Microsporum tinea capitis infections. Itraconazole has a high affinity for keratin, and accumulates to high levels at the site of superficial fungal infections. A pulse regimen may be chosen over continuous dosing, because the accumulation persists after dosing of itraconazole has been stopped. An oral solution of itraconazole is available, and may be more convenient for childre…

Distribution and species composition of causative agents of dermatophytoses in Lithuania.

The aim of the investigation was to determine diversity of the causative agents of dermatophytoses and characterize the epidemiological situ … .8% of all isolates. Tinea unguium (75.5%) was the most common type of dermatophytosis, followed by tinea capitis (11.7%), tinea corporis (9.2%) and tinea pedis (1.2%). In 2001-2010, dermatophytes showed a decreasing tendency, whereas the incidence of Candida yeasts and other causative agents of dermatomycosis greatly increased.

[The present state of Trichophyton tonsurans infection in Japan and measures to combat it].

More than 10 years have passed since Trichophyton tonsurans infection first began to increase in Japan. Initially the infection was confined to high school and university students participating in combat sports clubs, but it has now spread among the athletes' family members and friends. In a recent survey, 10% of Judo athletes tested positive for Trichophyton tonsurans; most were asymptomatic carriers. T.tonsurans infection usually causes tinea corporis or tinea capitis, but lesions can occur on other sites, causing tinea unguim, tinea manus, etc . The course of infection is usually only mildl…

Dermatophytosis in children and adolescents in Gdansk, Poland.

During a 3-year period (1999-2001) a total of 94 cases of dermatophytosis were seen in patients from 0 to 18 years of age attending the Department of Dermatology, Venerology and Allergology of Gdańsk Medical University. Mycoses were diagnosed on the basis of clinical picture and direct microscopy and were confirmed by positive cultures. The most frequent pathogens were Microsporum canis (62%) and Trichophyton rubrum (12%). The most often forms of dermatophytosis in children were tinea cutis glabrae (42%) and tinea capitis (30%). Microsporum canis predominated in both locations. Glabrous skin l…

The aim of this study was to analyse the e … ropophilic dermatophytes were the main causative agents of tinea faciei. As previously described to tinea capitis, this result is probably due to changes in the epidemiology of dermatophytes worldwide.
