Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, making a single tooth replacement by an implant very difficult. When infections have been present and previous surgery at the apex of the root has taken place, bone destruction is substantial, increasing the resorption defect and aesthetic and prosthetic problems. The learning objective of this article is to describe the steps necessary for implant surgery and prosthetics. It includes bone regeneration procedures, implant placement, second stage surgery, reconstruction of interdental papillae,

A total of 45 mandibular fracture patients with 54 teeth in the fracture line were evaluated retrospectively. One tooth in the fracture line was lost in the accident, 6 were extracted later and 47 could be saved (87%). At the follow-up examination 38% of the teeth were diagnosed to have pulp necrosis, which was found more frequently in the older patients and in cases in which the time elapsing between the injury and the follow-up was longer. Pulp necrosis was also more frequent in cases in which the fracture line ran through the apex or dislocation of the fracture parts existed after the injur

INTRODUCTION: The most common cause of failure of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-apexified teeth is root fracture. This study aimed to identify the appropriate reinforcement materials following MTA apexification in immature teeth under simulated oral conditions.
METHODS: Part 1: To investigate the effect of dentine thickness: twenty-four teeth (n = 8) were assigned to 3 groups; intact, simulated immature teeth with 2.0 mm, and 1.5 mm dentin thicknesses. Roots were prepared using Peeso reamers until the predetermined thickness was achieved. Part 2: To evaluate the effect of reinforcement mat

Despite the fact that external cervical resorption (ECR) is a well-known and rather frequently met condition, the driving force of this phenomenon still remains unclear. Recently, hypoxia has been linked to ECR. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the existence of hypoxia in ECR and hypothesize on its role at the time of extraction. This work is a case study of a tooth with ECR. ECR diagnosis was based on clinical and radiographic examination with cone-beam computed tomographic imaging. The extracted tooth was further analyzed by using nanofocus computed tomographic imaging and immun

The purpose of the study was to analyse the mobility of teeth with severe orthodontically induced root resorption, at follow-up several years after active treatment, and to evaluate mobility in relation to root length and alveolar bone support. Seventy-three maxillary incisors were examined in 20 patients, 10-15 years after active treatment in 13 patients (age 24-32 years) and 5-10 years after active treatment in seven patients (age 20-25 years). All had worn fixed or removable retainers; seven still had bonded twistflex retainers. Total root length and intra-alveolar root length were measured

A patient's medical history and related dental manifestations can significantly contribute to confounding signs and symptoms leading to a diagnostic challenge. An 18-year-old female patient presented with persistent radiographic radiolucency associated with the apex of a previously treated tooth (tooth 9); asymptomatic apical periodontitis and endodontic failure were suspected. This report presents how a patient's condition of cleidocranial dysplasia had a profound effect on her dental history, which included the presence of multiple supernumerary teeth. Extensive surgical intervention during

BACKGROUND: Severe damage to the tooth, periodontal ligament, and pulpal tissue often occurs with intrusive luxation, and outcomes are quite unpredictable because of the variable ways in which the injury may occur, which influences both the choice of treatment and prognosis.
CASE REPORT: This case presents a novel method for the management of an intruded permanent maxillary central incisor with an immature apex. At first, watchful waiting for spontaneous re-eruption was the chosen treatment option. A palatal gingivectomy was performed and endodontic access was established, following which, an

Infectious dental complications are quite frequent given the high incidence of tooth decay. Other pathologies not related to dental decay can cause mouth infectious such as periodontal infections, alveolitis, peri-coronitis of impacted wisdom tooth and secondary infection of dental fragments. Dental infection can be localised to apex (top of the root) or progress to soft and bony tissues surrounding the teeth. The most frequent germs involved in these infections are generally the same as saprophyte buccal flora but are often associated to other anaerobic germs. The following complications will

BACKGROUND: Internal resorption is a pathological process initiated within the pulp space with the loss of dentin. It often is described as an oval shaped enlargement of the root canal space and usually is asymptomatic and detectable by routine radiographs. Treatment of internal resorption has included several materials--gutta-percha, zinc oxide eugenol and amalgam alloy. These materials do not provide strength to the tooth structure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old woman was referred to a dental clinic for treatment of a large internal resorptive defect in the coronal and middle one-third of

INTRODUCTION: A major challenge in dentistry is the replacement of teeth lost prematurely due to trauma, caries, or malformations; especially in growing patients. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of CAD-CAM surgically guided tooth autotransplantation in cryopreserved cadaver mandibles using guided templates and custom-designed osteotomes.
METHODS: Cryopreserved human cadaver heads were digitized and scanned using an intraoral optical scanner and a large-volume cone beam computed tomography device. First, virtual surgical planning was performed to create a 3D tooth replica, 2 s

Apexification is a process of forming a mineralized apical barrier and had been performed by using calcium hydroxide paste, due to its biological and healing performances in cases of existent trauma. This clinical report aims to report the results of a 16-year follow-up study of an apexification treatment applied to nonvital tooth 22 of a healthy 8-year-old male after a trauma. Clinical inspection of the tooth showed fractures of the incisal edge and mesial angle, absence of coronal mobility, and negative pulp vitality under cold testing. Radiographic analysis of the root revealed incomplete a

Although pressure resorption of second molars is associated with impacted and/or erupting third molars, the relationship between pressure resorption and age is unclear. In order to investigate this relationship, 3883 dental radiographs were studied in 3174 individuals of various ages. The incidence of superimposition of the second molar on the third molar was not elevated in any subgroup except that of women of 16-40 years of age. There were no age or sex differences for the incidence of second molar root resorption. In older individuals, root resorption associated with a completely impacted t

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and rodents possess continuously growing teeth, and dental problems are a major health issue in these species. Knowledge of tooth growth characteristics is required to adequately treat dental problems and advise owners concerning diets. Most research was performed using bur marks and measuring eruption and wear manually. However, this method cannot be applied to teeth less rostral than the first premolar; therefore, for evaluation of molars, other methods are needed. We evaluated the use of fluorochromes xylenol orange and calcein green to measure growth rates o

This article reports the clinical management and outcome of two avulsed permanent incisors that were kept dry for 42 hours. Dental trauma guidelines were followed and clinically successful outcomes were seen until seven months of follow-up. The factors contributing to successful management of this case despite the extreme clinical circumstances were attributed to pulp extirpation prior to replantation, doxycycline soak, fluoride soak, and timely endodontic treatment. Recent advances and alternate treatment modalities reported in literature are evaluated in the discussion.

A case of extensive crown fracture associated with intrusion of the permanent maxillary central incisors in an 8-year-old boy is reported. The treatment of both injured teeth included attempts of apexification and arrest of root resorption with calcium hydroxide. After 8 months of the trauma, there was no calcified barrier formation in the apex. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was then used as a filling material. At 15-month follow up, the teeth were asymptomatic and correctly sealed, the external inflammatory root resorption had stopped, and the radiolucent image had disappeared, which meant

PURPOSE: To determine the width and morphology of the mandible in the impacted third molar region, and to identify the location of the mandibular canal prior to planning impacted third molar operations.
METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 87 mandibular third molars from 62 Japanese patients were analyzed in this study. The width of the lingual cortical bone and apex-canal distance were measured from cross-sectional images in which the cortical bone was thinnest at the lingual side in the third molar region. Images were used for measuring the space (distance between the inner
