Large Pleomorphic Adenoma of The Upper Lip in a Middle-Aged Woman With Facial Deformity, Tooth Displacement, and Bone Loss: Uncommon Clinical Presentation of a Benign Tumor.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands, occurring in both major and minor glands, with a predilection for the intraoral palate. Its presentation in the upper lip is rare and, when large, may result in facial deformity, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth displacement, especially in long-standing lesions. Clinically, PA presents as a solid, painless, slow-growing, and well-circumscribed mass, which may cause functional morbidity depending on its size and location. The differential diagnosis includes canalicular adenoma, other benign minor salivary gla

Occlusal changes following posterior tooth loss in adults. Part 1: a study of clinical parameters associated with the extent and type of supraeruption in unopposed posterior teeth.

PURPOSE: One of the barriers to restoring an edentulous space may be the supraeruption of an unopposed tooth to occupy some or all of the space needed for prosthetic replacement. The aim of this study was to determine the extent and type of supraeruption associated with unopposed posterior teeth and to investigate the relationship between these and oral and patient factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diagnostic casts of 100 patients with an unopposed posterior tooth and of 100 control patients were scanned and analyzed to record the extent of supraeruption, together with other clinical parameters

Long-term neuroplasticity of the face primary motor cortex and adjacent somatosensory cortex induced by tooth loss can be reversed following dental implant replacement in rats.

Tooth loss is common, and exploring the neuroplastic capacity of the face primary motor cortex (face-M1) and adjacent primary somatosensory cortex (face-S1) is crucial for understanding how subjects adapt to tooth loss and their prosthetic replacement. The aim was to test if functional reorganization of jaw and tongue motor representations in the rat face-M1 and face-S1 occurs following tooth extraction, and if subsequent dental implant placement can reverse this neuroplasticity. Rats (n = 22) had the right maxillary molar teeth extracted under local and general anesthesia. One month later, se…

Changes in Maxillary Sinus Structure Due to Tooth Loss and the Effects of Sex and Aging on CBCT Before Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: A Cross-Sectional Study of 120 Patients.

Prosthesis for missing maxillary molars with dental implants often requires maxillary sinus augmentation owing to insufficient alveolar bone height. However, the anatomical structure of the maxillary sinus is a significant risk factor. This study used preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate changes in the anatomical structure of the maxillary sinus due to tooth loss and conducted an epidemiological survey of Japanese people to determine the effects of gender and age on these changes. Preoperative CBCT scans were analyzed in patients aged ≥ 50 years with free-end maxill…

Older age, smoking, tooth loss and denture-wearing but neither xerostomia nor salivary gland hypofunction are associated with low intakes of fruit and vegetables in older Danish adults.

Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction are prevalent conditions in older people and may adversely influence the intake of certain foods, … with an inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, after adjustment for covariates. Older age, smoking, tooth loss and denture-wearing were stronger determinants of low fruit and vegetable intakes than xerostomia and salivary hypofunction supporting the importance of dietary counselling and maintenance of oral health and an adequate masticatory performance.

Can the relation between tooth loss and chronic disease be explained by socio-economic status? A 24-year follow-up from the population study of women in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between number of missing teeth and all cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality as well as morbidity and to explore whether socio-economic factors mediate this association. An ongoing prospective cohort study of 1462 Swedish women included a dental survey in 1968/69 with follow-up until 1992/93. The dental examination included a panoramic radiographic survey and a questionnaire. Number of missing teeth at baseline was analysed in a Cox proportional hazards model to estimate time to mortality and morbidity. Number of missing teeth,
