[Diagnosis or encounter : On the medical perception of gender, transgender and nonbinarity].

This article reflects on the significance of medical perception in encounters with gender, trans identity and nonbinarity. Starting from the role of urology in the medical care of gender-diverse people, it shows that gender-affirming and gender-modifying treatments cannot be understood solely as somatic-medical or organ-focused interventions. They are part of complex developmental processes in which bodily well-being, gendered self-experience, social participation, sexuality, quality of life and other dimensions are closely intertwined. Gender is understood as a multidimensional self-experienc

Scapegoated communities, shared struggles: A call for solidarity with people who use drugs and queer and trans people.

Efforts to control, repress, and punish drug use and queer and trans existence are rising as right-wing extremism becomes increasingly mainstream. These connected efforts are seen through the stifling of bodily autonomy and agency using criminal-legal, biomedical and political apparatuses, and have been executed similarly for people who use drugs and queer and trans people alike. This is most notable for those who exist at the intersection of these communities. Both groups have withstood attempts at manufacturing internal hierarchies - always at the expense of those who are already most margin

Life Satisfaction and Negative Affect Among Trans Men, Trans Women, and Nonbinary Individuals in a U.S. National Sample.

Purpose: Transgender and nonbinary individuals often have limited educational and economic resources, lack social capital such as family and community support, and face discrimination. These factors are likely to have negative consequences for subjective well-being of transgender individuals. Yet, there is limited research using a national sample and comparing trans women, trans men, and nonbinary individuals. This study examined the impact of social support, social belonging, transgender connectedness, and discrimination on trans and nonbinary individuals' life satisfaction and negative affec

Men who have sex with men more often chose daily than event-driven use of pre-exposure prophylaxis: baseline analysis of a demonstration study in Amsterdam.

INTRODUCTION: The Amsterdam PrEP project is a prospective, open-label demonstration study at a large sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic. We examined the uptake of PrEP; the baseline characteristics of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender persons initiating PrEP; their choices of daily versus event-driven PrEP and the determinants of these choices. METHODS: From August 2015 through May 2016, enrolment took place at the STI clinic of the Public Health Service of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. MSM or transgender persons were eligible if they had at least one risk factor for HIV …

Intersecting Experiences of Healthcare Denials Among Transgender and Nonbinary Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and nonbinary individuals experience high levels of health disparities and are more likely to experience denials of health care than their cisgender (nontransgender) counterparts. There is a lack of evidence on how healthcare denials vary by gender identity and other intersecting identity characteristics in the transgender and nonbinary populations. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 U.S. Trans Survey (n=27,715), multivariate logistic regressions were used to analyze (in 2019) the increased likelihood of experiencing denials of trans-related care and standard care acr

State-level pro- and anti-transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) legislation and mental health among TGD young adults in the United States.

The United States has seen sharp increases in efforts to enact anti-transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) legislation at the state level, including limits on access to gender-affirming care, restrictions on access to public facilities, and constraints on public gender expression and presentation. Although existing research demonstrates that structural stigma generally leads to poorer mental health outcomes for TGD individuals and that protective laws (e.g., antibullying and nondiscrimination laws) reduce such poor outcomes, the impact of newer anti-TGD state legislation on TGD mental health is

Systems-Involved Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth: Homelessness, Juvenile Legal Systems, and Child Welfare and Foster Care.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth are overrepresented in legal and social support systems intended to protect and support youth along their developmental journeys. However, these systems often fall short for TGD youth and further stigmatize an already vulnerable population. This article provides an overview of the experience, care, and treatment of systems-involved TGD youth. Working with systems-involved transgender and gender-diverse youth necessitates a high level of compassion and advocacy in pursuit of more equitable care and access.

Facial Masculinization Surgery and its Role in the Treatment of Gender Dysphoria.

BACKGROUND: Interest in facial masculinization surgery is expected to increase as gender-affirming surgery becomes more widely accepted and available. The purpose of this study is to summarize the current literature describing operative techniques in facial masculinization surgery and provide an algorithmic approach to treating this patient population. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Medline databases were queried for literature on operative techniques and outcomes of facial masculinization surgery in transgender and cisgender patients, published through July 2018. Data on patient demographics,

Clinical utility of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) in the Spanish transsexual and nontranssexual population.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the usefulness of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI; Bem, 1974), an overall measurement of the cultural construct of masculinity and femininity, in the psychological assessment of Spanish transsexuals. Seventy male-to-female transsexuals (MF), 51 female-to-male transsexuals (FM), 77 control men, and 79 control women completed the Spanish version of the BSRI. Statistically significant differences between groups were only found on the femininity scale, on which MF transsexuals and control women scored significantly higher than FM transsexuals and control men. Estimated Effectiveness of JYNNEOS Vaccine in Preventing Mpox: A Multijurisdictional Case-Control Study - United States, August 19, 2022-March 31, 2023.

As of March 31, 2023, more than 30,000 monkeypox (mpox) cases had been reported in the United States in an outbreak that has disproportionately affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender persons (1). JYNNEOS vaccine (Modified Vaccinia Ankara vaccine, Bavarian Nordic) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 for the prevention of smallpox and mpox via subcutaneous injection as a 2-dose series (0.5 mL per dose, administered 4 weeks apart) (2). To expand vaccine access, an Emergency Use Authorization was issued by FDA on August 9, 2022,…

Social Contact, Social Distancing, and Attitudes Toward LGT Individuals: A Cross-Cultural Study of College Students in the United States, Italy, and Spain.

More than any other time in modern history, today people are significantly more likely to know (or be) lesbian, gay, and transgender (LGT) people; however, prejudices directed toward these groups remain. In the current study, we explore how social contact and social distancing/desired social contact are related to LGT prejudices using Worthen's (2012) Attitudes Toward LGT People Scales and data from four heterosexual college student samples in Oklahoma, Texas, Italy, and Spain (N = 1,217). In doing so, we provide the first-ever study to explore Allport's (1954) contact hypothesis as it relates

New insights into the goals of transgender male versus non-binary individuals considering metoidioplasty and phalloplasty gender-affirming surgery.

BACKGROUND: Understanding patient goals for metoidioplasty and phalloplasty gender-affirming surgery (MaPGAS) is paramount to achieving satisfactory, preference-sensitive outcomes, yet there is a lack of understanding of MaPGAS priorities and how these may vary between transgender men and non-binary individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB). Love addiction and gender modality: An empirical, comparative study involving Italian transgender and cisgender individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Love addiction is a state of addiction to relationships, from which dysfunctional emotions and behaviors develop, leading individuals to have a constant need for the other person and to failure in attempts of detachment. Given its recent scientific understanding, the study of love addiction has not yet been extended to the transgender community. AIMS: The present study aims to integrate gender modality into the study of love addiction. Specifically, the aims are to analyze the dynamics of love addiction by comparing a group of transgender people to a group of cisgender people, a

Enhanced Cohort Methods for HIV Research and Epidemiology (ENCORE): Protocol for a Nationwide Hybrid Cohort for Transgender Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, transgender women are disproportionately impacted by HIV and prioritized in the national strategy to end the epidemic. Individual, interpersonal, and structural vulnerabilities underlie HIV acquisition among transgender women and fuel syndemic conditions, yet no nationwide cohort monitors their HIV and other health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to develop a nationwide cohort to estimate HIV incidence, identify risk factors, and investigate syndemic conditions co-occurring with HIV vulnerability or acquisition among US transgender women. The implications of hormone treatment for cancer risk, screening and treatment in transgender individuals.

There is evidence that gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) for transgender individuals modulates their risk for specific malignancies including breast and prostate cancer, and meningiomas. However, there is insufficient data to make precise risk estimates accounting for age and inherited cancer risk. As such, screening recommendations remain broad. Even less evidence exists for best practice in the management of active or historical cancers in the transgender population. Guidance is therefore mainly extrapolated from cisgender populations but with considerations of the significant benefi

Co-opting the Body of the Identified Other: The Hysterization of Otherness in Relation to Self.

As transsexual and transgender identity and experience have emerged from the outer boundaries of sexual identity and have become part of mainstream awareness of the full potential for sexual self-definition, cultural response has ranged widely. Responses include acceptance and approval; moderate levels of anxiety concerning perceptions of gender, sexual identity, and sex; obsessive fascination with the "otherness," the "not-me-ness" of those identifying as transsexual or transgender; the desire of non-trans-people to co-opt the experience of trans-people without personal risk; alarm at the rei

The ecology of sexual health of sexual minorities in Guatemala City.

Guatemalan gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender persons carry disproportionate burden of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections compared with other Guatemalan subgroups. However, little is known about the determinants of sexual health to inform health promotion and disease prevention interventions among these sexual minorities. We sought to explore sexual health and HIV risk among Guatemalan sexual minorities, using a community-based participatory research approach. We conducted 8 focus groups (n = 87 participants total) and 10 individual in-depth inter…
