Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in Sudan: a case-control study comparing interferon-γ release assay and tuberculin skin test.

BACKGROUND: Most people exposed to M. tuberculosis show no evidence of clinical disease. Five to 10% of individuals with latent infection progress to develop overt disease during their life time. Identification of people with latent TB infection will increase case detection rates and may dictate new treatment policies to control tuberculosis. This study aimed to determine LTBI point prevalence in a population from Sudan using two different diagnostic methods: the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the IFN-γ release assay (IGRA). METHODS: This was a prospective, community-based and case-controlled

Tuberculin skin test and interferon-γ release assay in the detection of latent tuberculosis infection among Polish health care workers.

INTRODUCTION: For many years, Poland has had a mandatory vaccination program against tuberculosis, which recommended repeated vaccinations from birth to adulthood. Therefore, the clinical value of the tuberculin skin test (TST) in diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Poland remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a study on the usefulness of the TST and QuantiFERON®-TB test (QFT) for the evaluation of the prevalence and risk factors of L TBI among Polish health care workers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of the Polish health care workers. TST and QFT were pe

Performance of tuberculin skin test and interferon gamma assay for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

The objective of this prospective cross-sectional study was to compare a Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific interferon gamma (IFN-γ) enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT)] test with tuberculin skin test (TST) for detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). To our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the performance of QFT-GIT in comparison with TST in JIA. A cross-sectional study of 39 children with JIA and 40 healthy controls was conducted in İzmir, Turkey. Blood was for drawn for the QFT-

Biomarker changes associated with Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) conversion: a two-year longitudinal follow-up study in exposed household contacts.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence (50-80%) of Tuberculin Skin Test Positivity (TST+ >or=10 mm indurations) has been reported in TB endemic countries. This pool forms a huge reservoir for new incident TB cases. However, immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to identify immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion after acute Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) exposure. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A 24 month longitudinal study was carried out in a recently MTB exposed cohort of household contacts (HC = 93; 75% TST+). Control grou

Association between tuberculin skin test reactivity, the memory CD4 cell subset, and circulating FoxP3-expressing cells in HIV-infected persons.

BACKGROUND: Lack of reactivity to the tuberculin skin test (TST) is widely observed in individuals with advanced human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. METHODS: Biopsy specimens from the TST reaction site and from skin not infiltrated with purified protein derivative were obtained from 15 HIV-1-infected and 23 uninfected persons who did not have active tuberculosis and who were from a community in which the incidence of tuberculosis was very high. Histologic sections (size, 8 mum) were immunohistochemically stained for CD4, CD8, CD28, CD45RA, CD45RO, CD62L, CD1a, human leukocy

Prospective comparison of the tuberculin skin test and 2 whole-blood interferon-gamma release assays in persons with suspected tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are attractive alternatives to the tuberculin skin test (TST) for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. However, the inability to definitively confirm the presence of most M. tuberculosis infections hampers assessment of IGRA accuracy. Although IGRAs are primarily indicated for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection, we sought to determine the sensitivity of the TST and 2 whole-blood IGRAs (QuantiFERON-TB assay [QFT] and QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay [QFT-G]) in situations in which infection is confirmed by recovery of M. tuberc

Value of anatomopathological examination in goats with a positive comparative intradermal tuberculin test as part of a tuberculosis control programme.

BACKGROUND: Caprine tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae. A tuberculosis control programme has been implemented using the comparative intradermal tuberculin (CIT) test. However, infection with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculsis and infection with or vaccination against Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) may have a negative impact on specificity. Therefore, a postmortem examination is necessary to verify the tuberculosis status of each animal where positive predictive value is low. METHODS: Thirty-seven CIT-positi

Tuberculin skin testing and QuantiFERON™-TB Gold Plus positivity among household contacts in Vietnam.

SETTING: TB infection (TBI) is diagnosed using the technique-dependent tuberculin skin test (TST) or costly, more accurate interferon-gamma release assays. The TST (⩾10 mm) threshold was indicated by previous research among household contacts in Vietnam, but routine implementation with a different tuberculin reagent showed unexpectedly low TST positivity. OBJECTIVE: TST (⩾5 mm and ⩾10 mm) results were compared to QuantiFERON™-TB Gold Plus (QFT) results in household contacts during community campaigns in 2020 and 2021. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional multi-center implementation study. RES

Tuberculin skin testing and treatment modulates interferon-gamma release assay results for latent tuberculosis in migrants.

BACKGROUND: Identifying latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in people migrating from TB endemic regions to low incidence countries is an important control measure. However, no prospective longitudinal comparisons between diagnostic tests used in such migrant populations are available. OBJECTIVES: To compare commercial interferon (IFN)-gamma release assays (IGRAs) and the tuberculin skin test (TST) for diagnosing LTBI in a migrant population, and the influence of antecedent TST and LTBI treatment on IGRA performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study, performed from February to Septem

Influence of Bacille Calmette-Guérin on tuberculin skin testing in Venezuelan Amerindians in high tuberculosis burden areas.

INTRODUCTION: Extraordinarily high tuberculosis (TB) prevalence rates have been reported in Venezuelan Amerindians. Amerindian populations often live in geographically isolated villages where they receive little medical attention and live under precarious sanitary conditions. TB prevalence varies by ethnicity and geographic location and is generally higher in Amerindians than in non-indigenous (Creole) people. METHODOLOGY: Between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2009, the tuberculin skin test (TST) was administered during field operations to 9,538 Amerindian and Creole people between 0 and 9

Repeat tuberculin testing in BCG-vaccinated subjects in the United Kingdom. The booster effect varies with the time of reading.

The booster effect varies between populations, but has not been studied in the UK. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeat tuberculin tests at 1 wk in BCG-vaccinated healthy subjects (all hospital employees) in the UK; we have assessed whether a booster effect is present 48 and 72 h after injection. Twenty-six subjects received two tuberculin tests (both 10 units) administered by the Mantoux technique-Tests 1 and 2. At Test 2 there was a significant increase in induration at 48 h (mean, 7.8 mm; p < 0.001), no difference at 72 h (mean, 0.2 mm; p = 0.93), and a reduction at…
