Colonic tuberculosis masquerading as ascending colon carcinoma in a patient of FIGO Stage IIB cervical carcinoma following chemo-radiotherapy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Colonic tuberculosis may masquerade colonic carcinoma. Also, intestinal tuberculosis may mimic colonic carcinoma, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, etc. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40 years female was diagnosed with cervical carcinoma FIGO Stage IIB underwent chemo-radiotherapy. She was symptom-free for a few months and then she developed right-sided abdominal pain and abdominal fullness for 4 months. She underwent a colonoscopy that showed ulcerative growth and friable tissue in hepatic flexure of colon and histopathology and immunohistochemistry findings suggested no

Ultrasound findings of Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome (FHCS) associated with splenic tuberculosis in an HIV-positive male patient.

Fitz-Hugh-Curtis (FHCS) is characterized by an inflammation of the hepatic capsule concomitant or following pelvic infection due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhea. It is a rare condition occurring most often in a woman of childbearing age and very rare in male patients. Splenic involvement is also a rare form of abdominal tuberculosis. The association of these two conditions is very uncommon. We report the exceptional case of a 58- year-old HIV-positive male patient, with whom abdominal ultrasound helped diagnose FHCS associated with abdominal tuberculosis invovlving the spleen.

A 59-year-old woman with tuberculous meningitis masked by hepatic encephalopathy.

Tuberculous meningitis is a difficult diagnosis to make. The presenting symptoms, signs, and laboratory values are often nonspecific and can be attributed to other underlying conditions. Imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis can be more helpful. Extra pulmonary tuberculosis is not uncommon, and tuberculous meningitis represents 5% of extrapulmonary cases in the United States with the risk for tuberculosis increased six times for foreign-born persons. We report the case of a foreign-born cirrhotic patient with tuberculous meningitis whose diagnosis was likely delayed because of signs and sym

Membranous nephropathy secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis.

Glomerulonephritis (GN), secondary to tuberculosis, is quite a rare condition. Here we report the case of membranous nephropathy, which completely resolved after the treatment of tuberculosis. A 42-year-old man presented to a nephrologist with burning micturition. His urine routine examination (RE) was suggestive of 2+ protein. His 24-hour urinary protein was 4.2 grams. Renal biopsy revealed membranous nephropathy. His autoimmune, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV workups were non-conclusive. The nephrologist advised him to take Rituximab. Before the commencement of immunosuppressants, his Int

Case Report of Isoniazid-Related Acute Liver Failure Requiring Liver Transplantation.

The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in the United States in 2011 and 2012 was estimated at 4.4⁻4.8%. As of 2015, 12.4 million people still possessed LTBI. Isoniazid, or isonicotinic acid hydrazine (INH), is the most commonly used medication among varying regimens that exist in the treatment of tuberculosis and LTBI. INH-related hepatotoxicity is a well-known adverse effect of its use, often causing asymptomatic elevations in serum aminotransferase levels. These elevations are typically transient and reversible, but can cause acute, clinically-significant liver injury in rare

Successful treatment of drug-induced acute liver failure with high-volume plasma exchange.

We report two patients with drug-induced liver injury (DILI)-related acute liver failure (ALF) who were successfully treated with high-volume plasma exchange without liver transplantation. The first patient was a 66-year-old man admitted because of a perforated duodenal ulcer complicated with peritonitis and septic shock. After treatment with multiple antibiotics, the patient developed DILI and ALF. Grade 3 hepatic encephalopathy and profound jaundice were present. Symptoms and signs of ALF improved dramatically after initiation of plasma exchange. The patient was discharged uneventfully. The

Role of endoscopic ultrasound guided FNAC in diagnosis of pancreatic TB presenting as mass lesion: a case report and review of literature.

A 24-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain, obstructive jaundice, anorexia and weight loss. Ultrasound abdomen revealed pancreatic head mass with dilated common hepatic duct and intrahepatic bliliary radicles. CECT abdomen was suggestive of pancreatic head mass invading portal vein, splenic artery and hepatic artery. Provisional diagnosis of unresectable carcinoma head of pancreas was established. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) was done, which was also suggestive of pancreatic head mass infiltrating portal vein. EUS guided Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) was taken with an int

About an unusual systemic disorder: report of a cryptic miliary tuberculosis.

We report here the case of a young Chinese woman with cryptic miliary tuberculosis associated with acute hepatitis, pancytopenia, biological disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and hyponatremia. Following the introduction of a classic tuberculostatic treatment, her general status quickly improved. After an extensive review of the literature, this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of cryptogenic miliary tuberculosis with all its cumulative complications.

Viral Hepatitis as a Public Health Concern: A Narrative Review About the Current Scenario and the Way Forward.

Viral hepatitis is one of the emerging public health problems, which urgently needs special attention. The disease has a varied presentation at the time of diagnosis, and it can progress from an accidental finding to life-threatening conditions like liver cirrhosis. It belongs to the rare group of diseases that can cause chronic inflammation inside the body, and it can have a delayed presentation. It contributes substantially to the global burden on healthcare. In terms of mortality, the burden due to viral hepatitis is similar to that of HIV and tuberculosis. It is among the major global publ

Isoniazid-related hepatitis: a U.S. Public Health Service cooperative surveillance study.

After an outbreak of hepatitis in Washington, D.C. in 1970 among a group of persons taking isoniazid to prevent tuberculosis, an isoniazid surveillance study was conducted among 13,838 persons in 21 participating health departments. Age appeared to be the predominant factor influencing the risk of developing isoniazid-related hepatitis, i.e., increasing age was associated with an increasing risk. Drinking alcohol, especially on a daily basis, also seemed to enhance the risk of hepatitis among persons concurrently taking isoniazid. In general, case rates among males and females of the same race

Hepatic and pulmonary cystic echinococcosis in a patient from the Central African Republic.

Apical lung opacity was diagnosed in an asymptomatic 30 year-old woman native of Central African Republic by routine chest X-ray. CT scan demonstrated an excavated pulmonary mass and revealed a simple hepatic cyst. Tuberculosis was suspected but mycobacterial cultures remained negative. Three months later, ultrasonography showed septations within the hepatic lesion suggestive of cystic echinococcosis. The detection of seric anti-Echinococcus antibodies was positive. Hepatic and pulmonary cysts were removed surgically and association with three-month course of albendazole resulted in a favorabl

Hepatobiliary tuberculosis.

Hepatobiliary tuberculosis refers to the localized form of hepatic tuberculosis and is a distinct entity in which hepatobiliary involvement overwhelmingly dominates the clinical picture. Presentations are often delayed, and manifestations can be nonspecific. Fever is the most common symptom followed by abdominal pain, and hepatomegaly is the most common abnormality found on clinical examination. Abnormalities of the liver function tests are non-specific and hence not diagnostic. Ultrasound or computed tomography reveals single or complex masses, and guided biopsy is diagnostic either by demons

Infectious disease transmission through cell, tissue, and organ transplantation: reducing the risk through donor selection.

The incidence of cell transplant-transmitted infection is unknown and can only be inferred from prospective studies--that have not yet been performed and reported. The possibility of donor-to-recipient disease transmission through cell transplant therapy can be considered by reviewing the risk associated with other transplanted tissues and organs. Viral, bacterial, and fungal infections have been transmitted via transplantation of organs, tissue allografts such as bone, skin, cornea, and heart valves, and cell such as islets, hematopoietic stem cells, and semen. Several types of protozoan and

Tuberculosis Infection Under Anti-TNF Alpha Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Anti-tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a life-changing treatment leading to quality-of-life improvement. Nonetheless, this treatment is associated with a high risk of infection, especially tuberculosis. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine the frequency of active tuberculosis in our patients with chronic rheumatic disease and treated with TNF-α. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Spondylarthritis diagnosed according to ACR/EULAR 2009 criteria and ASAS 2010, respectively, and treated with biological agents for at least
