Onchodermal skin disease in a hyperendemic onchocerciasis focus in western Uganda.

To assess the degree of skin disease in Simulium neavei s.s.-transmitted onchocerciasis, 72 patients infected with Onchocerca volvulus in the Kabarole district of Uganda were studied. They were clinically and parasitologically evaluated. Onchocercal skin lesions were determined using a modified Murdoch skin assessment, and skin scores were calculated. The chronic skin score (4.0) was associated with age, and the acute skin score (8.5) was significantly higher in males. The burden of onchocercal skin lesions was found to be high in most patients. The number of nodules (median number 1.9) and th…

Dispersal range of Simulium neavei in an onchocerciasis focus of western Uganda.

The dispersal range of the vector Simulium neavei Roubaud (Diptera: Simuliidae) was investigated in an onchocerciasis focus in Kabarole district, western Uganda, adjacent to the Itwara Forest Reserve, where the species breeds in phoretic association with the river crab Potamonautes aloysiisabaudiae (Nobili) (Decapoda: Potamonautidae). Biting rates were highest at the edge of the forest, but blood-seeking flies were collected up to a distance of about 4 km from the forest. Entomological data did not agree with the geographical distribution of onchocerciasis, which is hyperendemic in larger dist…

Clinical and electro-clinical classification of epileptic seizure in west Uganda.

When compared to that of industralised countries, the prevalence of epilepsy in developing countries has generally been found to be higher and in some areas extremely high rates of up to 57 cases per 1000 inhabitants have been reported. The reasons for this difference are still widely unknown and detailed epidemiological as well as clinical data are scarce, especially from rural Africa. The present study was conducted in western Uganda, in an area of high epilepsy prevalence, known to be endemic for onchocerciasis. The seizures of all 91 epilepsy patients diagnosed in this area over the period…

Resistance in vivo of Plasmodium falciparum to co-trimoxazole in western Uganda.

In the context of the 'integrated management of childhood illnesses' (IMCI) programme the World Health Organization recommends treating children in malarious areas presenting with fever and respiratory symptoms with co-trimoxazole. In order to verify its effectiveness in uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria we carried out a study in vivo in western Uganda: 180 children under 5 years old were enrolled and treated with 40/8 mg/kg/d co-trimoxazole over 5 d, and 159 could be followed on days 3, 7 and 14. Effectiveness of treatment was found to be significantly different in various parts of …

Risk factors for Kaposi's sarcoma in HIV-positive subjects in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is associated epidemiologically with HIV infection and with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8 or KSHV). Both KS and HIV infection are common in Uganda. We conducted a case-control study of 458 HIV-seropositive. Ugandan adults with KS and 568 HIV-seropositive subjects without KS to examine risk factors for HIV-associated KS. METHODS: We recruited newly diagnosed adult KS cases from five hospitals in Kampala, Uganda and controls from a large referral clinic for HIV infection at Mulago Hospital. All cases and controls were counselled and tested for HIV and answered an …

Modelling the impact of alternative HIV intervention strategies in rural Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the likely impact on HIV incidence of increased condom use, a reduction in casual sexual partners, treatment programmes for other sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and combinations of these in rural Uganda. METHODS: A simulation model for the transmission dynamics of HIV infection and STD was employed, drawing on data from a rural population cohort in South-West Uganda with an HIV prevalence of 9% among adults in 1990. RESULTS: For the scenario most consistent with data from the study population, 39% of all adult HIV infections were averted, in the 10 years from 1990, …

Evidence for the occurrence of Schistosoma intercalatum at Albert Nile in northern Uganda.

During a field investigation in Rhino Camp at Albert Nile in northern Uganda, 77.8% of 636 persons excreted Schistosoma mansoni ova that were detected by the Kato-Katz method. Six patients, 8-17 years of age, had terminally spined schistosome eggs in their stools. These findings were confirmed when preserved specimens were examined at the Institute of Medical Parasitology in Bonn using a concentration technique. The mean +/- SD length of 36 terminally spined eggs was 156 +/- 6 microns and the mean +/- SD width was 59 +/- 3.6 microns. Urine filtration in the study patients revealed no schistoso…

An overview of the use of anti-tuberculous drugs in Uganda and Hong Kong.

Anti-tuberculous (Anti-TB) chemotherapy in Uganda is outlined. Its pattern of use and the subsequent shortcomings have prompted the need for the present review. A collateral comparison to that of Hong Kong was run to emphasize the correlation of anti-TB chemotherapy with economic development and regional variation in the population of the two areas. Tuberculosis of the central nervous system (CNS) has a high fatality rate. In the search for a more comprehensive anti-TB dosage regimen, the difficulty in treating tuberculosis of the CNS has attracted special attention with emphasis on the fate o…

Joint modeling of alcohol and tobacco use among adults in Uganda.

Alcohol and tobacco use are leading modifiable risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa, including Uganda, these behaviors are increasingly common but often analyzed separately, limiting understanding of their shared determinants. This study used nationally representative data from the 2014 Uganda WHO STEPS survey to examine individual and joint predictors of current alcohol and tobacco use among adults aged 18-69. Using separate and joint logistic regression models, we assessed associations with demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors, …

The Effect of Anemia on Mortality in Children Hospitalized with Severe Pneumonia in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of anemia on mortality among children hospitalized with severe pneumonia in Uganda. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective cohort study enrolled children aged 6 to 59 months admitted with severe pneumonia to 2 hospitals in western Uganda. Severe pneumonia was diagnosed based on World Health Organization criteria, and anemia was diagnosed by hemoglobin (Hb) measured at admission. RESULTS: Among 212 children with severe pneumonia, with a median age of 13.3 months, 67.5% had at least mild anemia (Hb < 11 g/dL) and 9.0% had severe anemia (Hb < 7 g/dL). A lower mean Hb wa…

High KIR diversity in Uganda and Botswana children living with HIV.

Killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) are critical regulators of the innate immune system and are found on the surfaces of natural killer (NK) cells. The KIR encoding genes, located on chromosome 19q13.4, are genetically diverse and associated with HIV progression. However, there is limited knowledge on the diversity of KIR from Uganda and Botswana HIV-infected paediatric cohorts. We applied next-generation sequencing technologies on 312 participants (Uganda: n = 246, Botswana: n = 66), Pushing Immunogenetics to the next-generation (PING) bioinformatics pipeline, logistic regression…

Accuracy of recording of malaria rapid diagnostic test results in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have been critical in promoting the rational use of antimalarials and strengthening malaria surveillance. However, the accuracy of routinely reported RDT results in Uganda remains unclear. The study's objective was to measure the level of agreement between healthcare workers (HCWs) and an external panel's RDT results among lower-level public health facilities in Busoga and Lango regions, Uganda. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in 16 public health facilities in four purposively selected districts in Uganda. At each study site, images…

Spectrum and trends of cancer among HIV patients in Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) restores cellular immunity, significantly reducing AIDS-related mortality and morbidity thus improving the quality of life among People living with HIV (PLHIV). Studies done in several countries show a decline in AIDS defining cancers (ADCs) with the introduction of ART however the increased longevity has led to the increase of Non-AIDS defining cancers (NADCs). The study was aimed at studying the changing spectrum and trends of cancer among Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) patients in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart…

A 2-week old infant with Mpox in Uganda: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization declared Mpox (formerly known as monkey pox) as a public health emergency of international concern in August 2024. Whereas Mpox primarily affects adults and children, neonatal case reports are rare. We present a case of Mpox in a 2-week-old neonate without prior known history of exposure, and whose mother's DNA polymerase chain reaction test was negative for Mpox. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-week-old African female neonate presented to our emergency unit with 1-week history of high-grade fever and 4-day history of vesicular rash. The rash initially manifes

A Systematic Review of the Microbial Landscape of Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a growing health concern globally. Poorly managed diabetes may result in diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), which can become a source of chronic infection known as diabetic foot infections. The increasing trend of diabetes in Uganda speaks to the potential for diabetic foot ulcers which may eventually become infected and their attendant impact on the quality of life of diabetic patients. This review assesses the microbial diversity of DFUs in Uganda, aiming to guide treatment and identify research gaps. MAIN BODY OF THE ABSTRACT: We searched PubMed, Scopus and Embase for stud…
