One hundred and fifteen women were considered to be at risk of cervical incompetence, judging from their previous history. They were scanned serially from the first trimester to 32 weeks of gestation. Of the 115, 75 women were found to have defective cervix, as assessed on the basis of its length, its overall width and the width of the cervical canal at the level of the internal cervical os, and herniation of the amniotic membrane, with or without fetal parts, into the cervical canal. The case of a fetal jejunal atresia diagnosed by ultrasound in the 34th gestational week is reported. Typical ultrasonic findings are presented. Polyhydramnios, that usually can be observed, was not existent. The different types of jejunal atresia are discussed with regard to the diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. Early prenatal diagnosis in this case has brought along an optimal postpartal therapy for the newborn, essentially improving its prognosis.

Experience with echocardiographic diagnosis of a tricuspid defect, using one- and two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography, is reviewed. Excision biopsy of the spleen was performed in 32 patients, using a recently invented instrument, which consists of a spring-trigger system for firing the two parts of a Tru-Cut needle. The biopsies were carried out under the guidance of an ultrasonic scanner. An ultrasonic study of the breast of a group of 250 patients attending a breast screening clinic has been performed. Four types of breast can be recognised by their ultrasonic characteristics and the study shows how appearances alter with increasing age. The CUSA Ultrasonic Surgical System fragments and aspirates a wide spectrum of firm tumors of the central nervous system with little transmitted movement to adjacent normal neural structures. Antenatal and postnatal ultrasonic findings of a case of cystic dilatation of the fourth cerebral ventricle (the Dandy-Walker syndrome) are presented. The triangular enlargement of the ventricle visualized ultrasonically was associated with mild widening of the lateral ventricles, and the finding was established postnatally by computer-assisted x-ray tomography.

The reliability of diagnostic ultrasound in the assessment of vitreo-retinal disease was studied using an all-purpose ultrasonic machine. Five vitreous echo patterns are described, two representing retinal detachment, two demonstrating the features of vitreous membranes (condensation of vitreous tissue) and one typical of simple vitreous haemorrhage.
