A functional role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (lobules X and IXc,d of the vermis) for vestibular processing has been strongly suggested by direct reciprocal connections with the vestibular nuclei, as well as direct vestibular afferent inputs as mossy fibres. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of laser in treatment of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
METHOD: Eighty-nine cases of OSAHS were treated by Laser assisted uvulopalptoplasty (LAUP). Among the cases, the soft palate and uvula were partly resected. The cureiform incise was made into the soft palate along the each side of uvula.
RESULT: The follow-up period was six months, 76 cases received the detection of polysomnography. Eight cases were cured; 36 cases had notable effects; 25 cases had effects; 7 cases had no effects. The total ratio of validity was 90.8%.

We hereby present a case of a 22-year-old female patient with a lesion on the right side of the uvula. Histopathological assessment identified a cystic lesion with a branching configuration. The cyst lining consisted of non-keratinising stratified squamous epithelium, ciliated columnar epithelium, and focal areas of mucinous columnar epithelium. Within the cystic lumen, a focus of ectopic parathyroid tissue was observed. Thirty patients suffering from habitual snoring were subjected to laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty with a KTP/532 laser under local anesthesia. The patients selected for the present study had no complaints of severe sleep apnea. Our study encompasses 61 patients (49 men--80.3%; 12 women--19.7%) treated from September 1998 through August 2001. Mean follow-up covers 25 months (range: 7-43 months).
