OBJECTIVES: When all the breech conditions for the acceptance of a vaginal breech birth are present, we occasionally practise a total breech extraction for non frank breech presentations. Similarly, for frank breech presentations, instead of using the fetal leg as tractor, we sometimes apply the vacuum extractor on the breech presentation in order to perform the first step of the total breech extraction. The vacuum extractor is not traumatic for the fetus and enable a quick extraction. This study was conducted to describe the technique we use in our ward.

From April 1998 to January 2000 we treated 14 patients with vertebral osteoporotic compression fractures and intraosseous vacuum phenomenon with intracorporal bone grafting using a mixture of autogenous bone graft and calcium sulfate and posterior instrumentation. The purpose of this review is to present a 4-year experience with the vacuum pack technique of temporary abdominal closure. From April 1992 to December 1996, 171 vacuum packs were performed on 93 patients. Eighty-seven vacuum packs were performed on 38 general surgical patients, and 84 vacuum packs were performed on 55 trauma patients. Overall hospital mortality was 32 per cent. A total of 304 women, for whom operative delivery was considered necessary in the second stage of labour, were randomly assigned to delivery by vacuum extraction or forceps. This study reports on the management of open calcaneal fractures using vacuum suction dressing (VSD) in three cases at a tertiary care hospital. The cases include a 40-year-old man with bilateral calcaneal fractures, a 5-year-old girl with an avulsed Achilles tendon, and a 16-year-old girl with an infected open foot fracture. VSD was utilized in each case to promote wound healing, prevent severe complications like infection and amputation, and reduce the need for invasive surgery. All patients showed significant improvement, with successful wound healing and recovery over the follow-up period.
