[Pregnant vaginal carriers of beta-haemolytic streptococcus group B (author's transl)].

Vaginal schwabs of 142 pregnant women in different stages of pregnancy have been studied. 45 women who weren't pregnant and had no signs of vaginal infections, were the control group of the study. A higher incidence of "Streptococcus agalactiae" in vaginal schwabs of women who weren't pregnant (15.5%), as compared to the pregnant women (7.1%) was observed. A lower incidence of "Streptococcus agalactiae" was found in the last three months of pregnancy (1.8%) which is in direct relation to the low number of neonatal sepsis caused by "Steptococcus agalactiae" found in our country.

A prospective pilot evaluation of vaginal and urine self-sampling for the Roche cobas 4800 HPV test for cervical cancer screening.

This pilot study sought to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing vaginal self-swabs and urine samples for HPV-based cervical cancer screening in 700 women who had undergone conventional Pap smear screening via the national cervical cancer program in Korea. The cobas 4800 HPV test was utilized to detect HPV in the self-samples. Pap smear results revealed three cases of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, 649 cases of negative for an intraepithelial lesion or malignancy, and 48 non-specific inflammatory findings. High-risk HPV was detected in 6.7% of urine samples and 9.6% of v

Differentiated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia-associated invasive cervical squamous cell carcinoma as a source of major cytopathological and surgical pathological discrepancy in Papanicolaou smear screening tests.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (dCIN) analogous to differentiated squamous intraepithelial neoplasia of the vulva is characterised by the proliferation of atypical cells limited to the basal/parabasal layers. Exfoliative cytology of dCIN has not been investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 46-year-old woman, with a history of normal Papanicolaou (Pap) smear up to 2 years prior to the occurrence of postcoital vaginal bleeding had two consecutive Pap smears, which only revealed atypical squamous cells of unknown significance (ASCUS). The subsequent cervical biopsy

Microfilaria in cervicovaginal Pap smears: A common parasite hiding in an unusual site: Short series of four cases with literature review.

In India, filariasis is a severe and significant public health problem. It has been reported to be present in any potential site. However, cervicovaginal Pap smear cytology rarely contains microfilariae despite the widespread occurrence. The occurrence of microfilariae in cervicovaginal smears has seldom been reported, even as an accidental finding. In our retrospective study, four cases of clinically asymptomatic filariasis were diagnosed on a routine cervicovaginal Pap smear from January 2019 to July 2022. All microfilariae were characterized as Wuchereria bancrofti. In the present study, th…

A Clinicopathological Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approach to Cytolytic Vaginosis: An Extremely Rare Entity that may Mimic Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

OBJECTIVES: Cytolytic vaginosis is a very rare entity that may be clinically misdiagnosed as vulvovaginal candidiasis. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of cytolytic vaginosis in patients displaying symptoms similar to vulvovaginal candidiasis and to develop a clinicopathological diagnostic and therapeutic approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 3000 cervical smear samples were evaluated at our center between 2015 and 2018. Patients whose PAP smears demonstrated significant epithelial cytolysis, naked nuclei, excessive increase in lactobacilli population, absent or minim

[B-streptococci in obstetrics--risks and consequences of maternal colonization and neonatal contamination].

2,373 mothers and their newborn were studied during two years with respect to B streptococci colonisation or contamination. Bacteriological, vaginal and anal smears were taken from mothers at the beginning of parturition, as well as the amnion and the aspirated stomach contents of the newborn, employing, in each case, conventional culture methods and a latex agglutination test as a rapid testing method. Smears from the ears were also taken from the newborn for bacteriological examination. The vertical transmission and its possible influencing variables were examined in 1,328 mother/child pairs

Premature with trichomoniasis: report of one case.

We report a case of an extremely-low-birth-weight premature infant with Trichomonas vaginalis infection of the vagina and urinary tract. Her mother is also infected with Trichomonas vaginalis but is asymptomatic. The patient's illness started as an asymptomatic pyuria and later on at early infancy developed profuse malodorous vaginal discharge. Her vaginal discharge was positive for Trichomonas vaginalis, both on wet mount and Papanicolaou smear, and the infection responded well to treatment with metronidazole. Infants with recurrent vaginal discharge presenting beyond the neonatal period may

A Large Exophytic Tumor of the Cervix Causing Vaginal Bleeding in Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Vaginal bleeding in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy is usually due to placental causes, namely placental abruption and placenta previa. Other causes include uterine rupture, vasa previa, and hematologic disorders. However, benign or malignant lesions of the vagina and the cervix may also cause vaginal bleeding or spotting. Although cervical cancer in pregnancy is rare, about 8% of pregnant women have an abnormal Pap smear and 3% of the total cervical cancers are diagnosed during pregnancy. We report a case of a 20-week pregnant woman who presented with vaginal bleeding; a visual i
