[Radiation load to the gonads in the sclerosing treatment of varicocele].

Vague notions concerning the radiation dose to the gonads during sclerosing treatment of varicoceles have lead to the unjust neglect of this form of therapy. Accurate measurements have shown that the dose is less than the dose to the female breast resulting from chest radiographs in two planes, if the treatment proceeds without complication. Although the dose is so low, an attempt has been made to evaluate the risk.

Percutaneous venography and occlusion in the management of spermatic varicoceles.

Spermatic venography was performed in 140 patients; the main indications were subfertility and abnormal spermatogenesis. Of these 140 patients, 113 had positive examinations, with 33 of them having bilateral varicoceles. Of 146 total varicoceles demonstrated, 42 were found on the right side; the advantage of using the jugular vein approach in both the diagnosis and percutaneous treatment of these cases is stressed. Of the 146 varicoceles, 128 were successfully occluded using spring coils. Because of the frequency of bilateral subclinical varicoceles, spermatic venography and percutaneous embol…

Comparison of scrotal scintigraphy and thermography for the diagnosis of varicocele.

Varicocele is the most frequent cause of male subfertility. Several invasive and noninvasive techniques can be used to visualize scrotal phlebectasies. In this study sequential scintigraphy after intravenous injection of 99mTc-albumin was compared with tele-thermography. The normal and pathological images are described. The more obvious the clinical condition, the more lesions were revealed by scintigraphy (29.6% in subfertile men suspected of having variococele; 76.9% in patients with first degree varicocele; and 100% in Grades II and III cases). In 55 cases (of a total of 76 cases explored b…

Abnormal spermatozoa, testicular degeneration, and varicocele in a ram.

A 4-year-old Corriedale ram, with a history of infertility, had 50% abnormal acrosomes in the ejaculate resembling knobbed spermatozoa. Elec … , but increased to 83% a month later. Examination of the testes after castration revealed bilateral varicocele and degeneration of seminiferous epithelium.

Varicocele in childhood and adolescence: implication in adulthood infertility?

Thirty boys eight to eighteen years of age had a clearly palpable left varicocele. The presenting complaint usually was either an asymptomatic scrotal mass or a scrotal ache after physical exercise. In 77 per cent of the patients the left testis was smaller than its male. All but one of the 17 boys between ages eight and fifteen had a smaller left testis. When the varicocele is symptomatic, presents as a prominent mass, or where growth of the left testicle lags behind that of its mate, surgical correction of the varicocele is recommended.

[Experience with surgery for varicocele in childhood (author's transl)].

48 children who underwent high ligature of the internal spermatic vein for varicocele were re-examined. In one patient (2,1%) a hydrocele appeared postoperatively. In 30 boys (62,5%) the varicocele disappeared completely following surgery, in 18 patients (37,5%) the varicocele persisted which was in 9 boys only palpable and in another 9 boys clearly visible. High spermatic vein ligature according to Bernardi turned out to be a method providing good postoperative results and with few complications in childhood. In the case of persisting varicocele collateral veins should be considered and ligat…

[Idiopathic varicocele with special reference to childhood and adolescence].

In the past 20 years, we have treated 28 patients with idiopathic varicocele. The cases are described and the literature is reviewed in relation to clinical presentation and treatment. Since there is a correlation between varicocele and sub-fertility early surgical treatment is advocated for children and adolescents. The surgical approach described by Ivanissevich with an inguinal approach and high ligation of the testicularis vein is preferred and this allows access for associated conditions which we found in one third of our patients.

Serum gonadotropins and testosterone in infertile patients with varicocele.

Serum concentrations of gonadotropins and testosterone in 25 infertile men with varicocele were compared with those in control men and men with idiopathic oligo-azoospermia. No significant difference was found in values of serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (14.9 +/- 13.6 mIU/ml), luteinizing hormone (LH) (24.9 +/- 19.1 mIU/ml), and testosterone (5.0 +/- 2.1 ng/ml) when the group with varicocele was compared with either the control group (FSH, 7.0 +/- 3.2 mIU/ml; LH, 23.6 +/- 16.0 mIU/ml; testosterone, 5.3 +/- 1.8 ng/ml) or the group with idiopathic oligo-azoospermia (FSH, 23.0 +/- 22.69…

Histological lesions in the testis of infertile men with varicocele.

Varicocele frequently causes male infertility and histological lesions at the contralateral testis. The most frequent lesions found in this study included maturation arrest in the spermatidic phase, cellular and acellular thickening of the tubular wall, and degeneration of the Leydig cells. These lesions were typical of varicocele and their simultaneous presence suggests that scrotal temperature and modified endocrine secretion of the interstitial testis play a role in the pathogenesis of this type of infertility.

Observation or treatment of paediatric varicoceles: revisiting the evidence.

Paediatric varicocele is a common condition affecting ~15% of male adolescents. There is no consensus on an optimal management strategy given that robust data identifying adolescents at risk of long-term testicular dysfunction remain limited. Clinical decision-making is further complicated by heterogeneity in grade, laterality, age at diagnosis and testicular volume disparity. Features favouring observation include low grade, <10% volume asymmetry, hormonal and semen parameters within reference ranges, and low peak retrograde flow on Doppler ultrasonography. Conversely, findings associated wit…

Electroacupuncture for sperm improvement in varicocele: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Varicocele is a common cause of male infertility, often associated with impaired sperm quality, hormonal imbalance, and increased DNA fragmentation. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been proposed as an adjunct therapy to improve reproductive parameters, but clinical evidence remains limited. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 38-year-old male with a varicocele treated at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, Indonesia. The patient underwent 16 sessions of EA therapy. Sperm parameters and serum testosterone levels were measured before and after treatment. Following EA, sperm concen…

Association Between Leukocytospermia and Varicocele in Patients With Infertility.

INTRODUCTION: Male infertility is a complex condition affected by multiple anatomical, physiological, and biochemical factors. Among the most commonly risk factors are leukocytospermia and varicocele, which are associated with increased oxidative stress and affected sperm function. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to address the association between leukocytospermia and varicocele in patients with infertility. METHODS: We had revised the studies from 2000-2025 that addressed the role of each leukocytospermia, varicocele and both of them on infertility. RESULTS: Recent studies have suggest…
