Pressurised solvent extraction for organotin speciation in vegetable matrices.

Because organotin compounds (OTC) are widely used in many fields of activity, they have become an ubiquitous environmental presence. The presence of organotins in the environment impacts upon food safety, making it important to monitor the levels of organotin pesticides in fruits and vegetables. Nevertheless, only a few studies have been published on organotin speciation in plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and optimise a specific procedure based on pressurised solvent extraction (PSE) that is suitable for monitoring organotin content in vegetables. In ASE, solvents ar…

Recovery of consciousness and life expectancy of children in a vegetative state.

The vegetative state does occur in children and is most commonly due to acquired traumatic and non-traumatic injuries. However, neurometabolic and degenerative diseases, as well as certain developmental brain malformations such as anencephaly, can also cause this condition. There are limited data available in children concerning recovery of consciousness and function from the vegetative state as well as life expectancy. This review concentrates on these issues and is based primarily on the data published in the Multi-Society Task Force Report on PVS which was published in 1994 as well as other

The neurological assessment of patients in vegetative and minimally conscious states.

Patients with serious central nervous system (CNS) injuries can enter a chronic state in which there is impaired awareness, but the presence of preserved basic vegetative functions. Such cases present formidable challenges to the medical practitioner in terms of clinical assessment and thus management. This paper presents the neurological approach to such patients highlighting the clinical clues that need to be sought to decide whether the patient is in a persistent vegetative or minimally conscious state (i.e., showing any responsiveness to external stimuli), or alternatively suffering from a

Murine macrophages kill the vegetative form of Bacillus anthracis.

Anti-protective antigen antibody was reported to enhance macrophage killing of ingested Bacillus anthracis spores, but it was unclear whether the antibody-mediated macrophage killing mechanism was directed against the spore itself or the vegetative form emerging from the ingested and germinating spore. To address this question, we compared the killing of germination-proficient (gp) and germination-deficient (DeltagerH) Sterne 34F2 strain spores by murine peritoneal macrophages. While macrophages similarly ingested both spores, only gp Sterne was killed at 5 h (0.37 log kill). Pretreatment of m

Effects of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) on terrestrial vegetation: a review.

At the global scale, among all N (nitrogen) species in the atmosphere and their deposition on to terrestrial vegetation and other receptors, NH3 (ammonia) is considered to be the foremost. The major sources for atmospheric NH3 are agricultural activities and animal feedlot operations, followed by biomass burning (including forest fires) and to a lesser extent fossil fuel combustion. Close to its sources, acute exposures to NH3 can result in visible foliar injury on vegetation. NH3 is deposited rapidly within the first 4-5 km from its source. However, NH3 is also converted in the atmosphere to

[Right-sided infective endocarditis with a large size vegetation].

A 2-year-old boy with ventricular septal defect(VSD) had suffered from right-sided infective endocarditis with a vegetation 1.0 cm in size, involving pulmonary valve. Resection of the vegetation and partial resection of the pulmonary valve and patch closure of the VSD was performed after 3 weeks intravenous antibiotic therapy. In right-sided infective endocarditis, it is still unclear, however, which factors may be useful in predicting outcome or determining the need of surgical intervention. We recognize that following factors are the risk for need of surgical intervention. 1. persistent infe

Maternal persistent vegetative state with successful fetal outcome.

A woman suffered from massive blunt injuries in a motor vehicle accident at a presumed 4 weeks' gestation, but she successfully carried the fetus for an additional 29 weeks. Premature labor began at 33 weeks' gestation and a live 1,890 g male was delivered. His development was normal for the 12-months postnatal follow-up period. The patient remained in a persistent vegetative state. Only 12 cases of severely brain-injured pregnant patients who delivered babies have been reported in English literature. Such patients need special maternal and fetal monitoring. As shown in our patient, successful

[Vegetative state. Practice guideline for its diagnosis and treatment].

Vegetative state (VS) is a clinical condition in which patients have lost both their consciousness content and alertness. So defined, it seems a simple diagnosis to achieve. However, facts disprove this idea, and indeed a striking evidence exists that doctors are unable to satisfactorily diagnose VS. In this series of 3 articles, a multi-disciplinary Italian working group proposes solutions in order to properly diagnose VS (Part I) and to differentiate it from other apparently similar situations (part II). Consciousness, coma and VS state are clearly defined and the reader is provided with eas

[Approach to the patient in vegetative state. Part I: diagnosis].

Coma is the condition in which both components of consciousness, wakefulness and awareness, are lost. Therefore, the comatose patient neither opens the eyes, nor utters comprehensible words or follows commands. In the vegetative state (VS), awareness (including all cognitive function and emotion) is lost, while the vegetative functions, including breathing and sleep-wake cycles (the wakefulness), persist. Usually VS follows a state of coma caused by traumatic or anoxic brain damage. Pathologic brain examination demonstrates extensive subcortical, white matter, bilateral thalamic, and brainstem

The recent vegetational history of the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire, UK.

The results of 14 C- and 210 Pb-dated pollen profiles from the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire are presented, covering the period from the late Iron Age up to the present day. Two notable features of the pollen profile are the apparent lack of a period of large-scale forest destruction during the time of the Norse invasions and the substantial phase of tree clearance towards the end of the Iron Age period. The evidence suggests that the Viking invasions into Lancashire may not have been as destructive as once believed. The invasions were probably gradual, possibly localized (certainly as regards

Eradication of vitamin A deficiency with 5 cents and a vegetable garden.

1. It is estimated that 10 million children are vitamin A deficient. Of these children, over 1 million needlessly die, go blind, or suffer lesser degrees of visual impairment every year. This problem--along with all forms of malnutrition--is likely to be seriously magnified by the year 2000. The scope of the problem is immense, and the need to address it is urgent. 2. Interventions for the prevention of vitamin A deficiency and its consequences are considered to be some of the most cost-effective and health-productive in the Third World--and yet the problem remains immense, representing one of

[Transesophageal echocardiography in the study of intracardiac thrombosis, tumors and vegetations].

Of 200 consecutive patients, studied with transesophageal echocardiography the findings were analyzed with respect to the presence of thrombi, tumors or vegetations. Thrombus formation was detected in 18 patients; their location and associated pathology are described. Tumors were present in 9 cases and in 10 patients endocarditis in native or prosthetic valves. The information obtained by transesophageal echocardiography was compared with transthoracic echocardiographic data. Transoesophageal echocardiography was demonstrated to be more sensitive, especially in the detection of intracavitary m

[Influence of adenoidal vegetation on rhinopharyngeal obstruction: cephalometric study].

In this paper, the Authors propose a new method of cephalometric visualization of adhaenoids, in order to verify the amount of them as cause of an obstructive pathology. In this evaluation, related to a group of 100 individuals, was found an inversely proportional relation between adhaenoid's volume and angolar value of FHBoPA angle.

Regional cerebral blood flow in the persistent vegetative state.

Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in eight patients in a persistent vegetative state was measured and compared with that in five healthy volunteers. The patients were classified into three groups: Group 1 (locked-in syndrome) consisted of a single patient, Group 2 (typical vegetative state) of five patients, and Group 3 (prolonged coma) of two patients. CBF was measured early after onset by single photon emission computed tomography with 123I-N-isopropyl-p-iodo-amphetamine and/or 99mTc-hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime. The regions of interest (ROIs) were the bilateral frontal, temporal, pariet

Undigested vegetable matter identified on barium-enema examination.

Undigested vegetable matter may reach the colon intact and be discovered on barium-enema examination. The authors demonstrate several examples of filling defects in the colon caused by vegetable matter. The characteristic shape and corresponding dietary history should allow for an appropriate diagnosis.

Echocardiographic demonstration of porcine mitral valve vegetation and dehiscence.

The echocardiographic study of a patient with a malfunctioning porcine valve in the mitral position is presented. Echocardiography of the mitral valve revealed multiple, dense heterogeneous echoes behind and within the valve stent which were suggestive of vegetations. At the aortic valve level, a clear systolic echo in the left atrium was recorded. This echo probably represented the prolapsing anterior valve stent and was caused by a major dehiscence of the valve stent due to endocarditis.
