The furosemide test and vestibular status in Meniere's disease.

A total of 62 ears of patients with typical Meniere's disease was examined by the furosemide test to detect endolymphatic hydrops. In 95% of the normal control group, the per cent change in the maximum velocity of the slow phase of caloric nystagmus (MVS) after injection of furosemide was under 10%. Therefore, a positive furosemide test was defined as a change in MVS of more than 10%. Thirty-five (56%) of the 62 ears with typical Meniere's disease showed a positive furosemide test. When the affected ears were divided into two groups according to vestibular symptoms, only 11 (38%) of 29 inactiv

A comparative cranio-corpography study on the findings in the Romberg standing test versus the Unterberger/Fukuda stepping test in vertigo patients.

Cranio-corpography (CCG) stepping and standing tests are compared in a group of 202 neurotological patients. In these two vestibulo-spinal tests, performed by a simple and precise photo-optic system, the movement of the shoulders and the head--and not the movement of the feet, is taken as the parameter for the investigation. The two tests are complementary one to the other. The CCG should be an integral part of every neurotological laboratory.

Progress in vestibular analysis in Omagh.

To sum up, rotational testing forms a valuable role in our system of vestibular analysis. It does not replace history taking, clinical examination, and other vestibular tests, but it does supplement them and in particular it does supplement the caloric test which by itself has many limitations.

Human vestibular epithelia: prospects for future study.

The lateral ampullae of thirteen patients, removed during translabyrinthine surgery for various disorders, have been examined with light and electron microscopy. Correlation of results of vestibular function tests with changes of histology and ultrastructure have been attempted. Light and electron microscopy revealed the same features that other investigators have reported as pathologic changes in the sensory epithelium and associated subepithelial structures. The occurrence of these features did not correlate with the vestibular function tests, indicating that these features, in our tissue sa…

[A retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics of 63 patients with vestibular neuritis].

Objective:To retrospectively analyze the results of auditory examination, vestibular function examination and laboratory examination of 63 pa … vHIT were 46 cases, 22 cases and 30 cases, respectively. 17 out of 63 cases completed all the four vestibular function tests. According to these tests, 49 patients could determine the extent of injury, including 27 cases with unilateral superior vestibular nerve injury, 21 cases with unilateral superior and inferior vestibular nerve injury and 1 case with unilateral inferi …

Pediatric Ménière's disease with disassociated cochlear and vestibular symptoms: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Typical Ménière's disease (MD) rarely occurs in childhood. Compared to adults, age-associated changes in vestibular function can occur during infancy and childhood. Previous case reports may have lacked some audiovestibular tests in children. It is worthwhile to follow a child with MD to observe how vertigo and hearing loss could progress under an insufficient vestibular system. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old pediatric patient with disassociated episodes between vertigo and hearing loss was finally diagnosed with MD. He was diagnosed with probable MD due to lack of objective evid

[Clinical application of dynamic visual acuity testing in patients with vestibular migraine].

Objective:To investigate the potential characteristic manifestations and application value of the Dynamic Visual Acuity Test(DVAT) in vestib … e effect of age on Dynamic Visual Acuity Loss(DVALoss), as well as the correlations of DVALoss with vestibular function tests and DHI scores. Results:DVALoss in the case group was significantly higher than that in the control group(P<0.001). In both groups, age was significantly and positively correlated with DVALoss(P<0.001). Within the case group, DVALoss was strongly an …

Vestibular pathophysiologic changes in experimental perilymphatic fistula.

An animal model of experimental perilymphatic fistula (EPLF) was developed in the guinea pig in order to study vestibular pathophysiology. In experimental animals, 4 microL of perilymph was suctioned from one cochlea via the round window membrane. Changes in vestibular function were as follows. 1) During the acute stage (5 hours postoperatively), spontaneous nystagmus directed toward the normal side was noted in 57.4% of the EPLF animals. This lasted less than 24 hours. 2) One week postoperatively, direction-fixed positional nystagmus toward the lesioned ear was present in 22.7% of the EPLF an

Periodic alternating nystagmus of peripheral vestibular origin.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) is most commonly found either in its congenital form or after cerebellar/pontomedullary lesions. However, we identified PAN in 10 patients with peripheral vestibular disorders and will try to describe their characteristics to aid in the differential diagnosis between peripheral and central etiologies. STUDY DESIGN: Observation of a case series. METHOD: Peripheral vestibular lesions were confirmed by neurological examinations, vestibular function tests, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs). Eye movements of the patients were r…
