Pharmacological treatment of vertigo.

A review of the treatment of vestibular disorders with drugs is presented. In animal experiments, administration of certain drugs, e.g. alcohol, barbiturates and chlorpromazine, retards the vestibular compensation, while others, e.g. caffeine, amphetamine and ACTH, accelerate the compensation. In compensated animals, some drugs produce overcompensation and some decompensation. A double-blind, randomized trial of the effect of scopolamine and dimenhydrinate in patients with vertigo of varying origin showed, as compared with placebo, that these drugs did not significantly alleviate the vestibula

[High-resolution computed tomography in malformations of the cochlear and vestibular organs].

Twenty-one patients with congenital deformities of the petrous bones were examined by high resolution computed tomography. This allows an accurate description of the extent of the malformation in all parts of the cochlear and vestibular organs; only localised changes in the auditory ossicles, such as fixation of the stapes and changes in the soft tissue portions of the labyrinth, cannot be shown. Improved demonstration of soft tissues while using less radiation makes high resolution CT preferable to conventional polytomography. It is also easier to perform and provides axial projections which

Analysis of nystagmus response to pseudorandom velocity input.

This report describes a method to analyse the vestibular system when subjected to a pseudorandom angular velocity input. A sum of sinusoids (pseudorandom) input lends itself to analysis by linear frequency methods. Resultant horizontal ocular movements were digitized, filtered and transformed into the frequency domain. Programs were developed and evaluated to obtain the auto spectra of input stimulus and resultant ocular response, cross spectra, the estimated vestibular-ocular system transfer function gain and phase, and coherence function between stimulus and response functions.

Joint Committee on Aviation Pathology: XVII. Round window tear in aviators.

It is the intent of this paper to draw attention to round window tears with the inherent symptomatology that has, for the first time, been documented in two aircrew members. It is also felt important to emphasize that the condition, regardless of etiology, could be catastrophic to the flying pilot and may be an up-recognized cause of otherwise unexplainable accidents. Not all cases of window tears cause vertigo-but some do. Not all vertigo so caused is prostrating--but some is. Because of the findings in two reported cases, it is postulated that round window membrane tear may be a significant

Pontocerebellar atrophy combined with vestibular-reticular degeneration.

A 41-year-old woman was hospitalized in 1939 with neurologic signs from which there was complete recovery over a two-year period. In 1965 she was readmitted because of increasing forgetfulness and inability to care for herself; there were no neurologic deficits. In June 1970 torticollis developed and persisted until her death 15 months later. No cerebellar signs were elicited, but increased muscle tone was prominent. The brain showed remarkable flattening of the inferior surface of the cerebellum; the pons was small. The medullary substance of the cerebellum and each branchium pontis appeared

The practical management of dizziness.

THE PROBLEM OF DIZZINESS IS GREATLY SIMPLIFIED IF: (1) A definite routine is followed in the history taking and the steps of the examination; (2) the examination is done in two stages; and (3) a simple classification is used in cases of dizziness of vestibular origin whereby three groups are distinguished on the basis of localization of the origin. The etiologic diagnosis is thereby narrowed down to a relatively few possibilities. The treatment consists of measures to relieve the symptoms and to reverse the underlying disease which produced the symptoms.

Vestibular implants in bilateral vestibular failure: current evidence and future directions.

AIMS: Bilateral vestibular failure is a rare and disabling condition for which restorative treatment options remain limited. Vestibular implants have emerged as a potential neuroprosthetic intervention. This review summarises current evidence for vestibular implantation and considers relevant clinical, ethical and health system implications, including the New Zealand healthcare context. METHODS: A narrative review of the published literature was conducted using PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library from database inception to June 2025. Search terms included "vestibular implant", "vestibular

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep
