Measurement of aggression in psychiatric patients.

This article analyzes, describes, and characterizes the methods used for measuring aggression in studies on psychiatric patients. The authors reviewed all studies published between 1985 and 1994 in seven major psychiatric journals and found 103 studies on adult aggression and 43 on childhood and adolescent aggression. Almost half (44.7%) of the adult studies and 23.3% of the child and adolescent studies did not use any structured instrument; the remainder used a total of 52 different instruments, indicating that the methodology in this area is not well established. The methods used for measuri

SMARTWheels: development and testing of a system for measuring manual wheelchair propulsion dynamics.

The purpose of this project was to develop a system for dynamically sensing pushrim propulsion forces and torques and to collect kinetic data with the device. A system was developed to detect the forces and torques applied to the wheelchair pushrim, record, store, and process the measured data, and display the kinetic information for analysis. Ten adults, including four male wheelchair users, three ambulatory men, and three ambulatory women, pushed a wheelchair with the SMARTWheel on a dynamometer while their kinematics were videotaped. The kinetic data collected with our wheel were correlated

The effect of sphincter pharyngoplasty on the range of velar movement.

The aim of this study was to assess the mobility of the soft palate following sphincter pharyngoplasty in patients with velopharyngeal incompetence of variable aetiology. Pre- and postoperative videotape recordings of lateral view videofluoroscopy of 24 patients were retrospectively studied and compared with regard to the range of velar movement. Tracings of the velopharyngeal port were made on acetate paper directly from the television monitor and absolute angle measurements were taken. Analysis of the results showed a highly significant increase in the range of palatal movement postoperative…

A rating scale for Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: description, reliability, and validity data.

We developed a rating scale for tic disorders that uses only objective criteria and accommodates the variety of tic manifestations. Using short videotaped recordings with the examiner out of the taping room, we measured five tic variables: number of body areas affected, frequency of motor tics and vocalizations, and severity of motor tics and vocalizations. The rating scale fulfilled tests for inter-rater reliability and temporal stability, and correlated well with scales used to assess global changes over prolonged periods. It objectively detected improvement in tics with neuroleptics, the on

Panendoscopic feedback in the study of voluntary velopharyngeal movements.

A videopanendoscope system was used to record velopharyngeal movements and to display those movements to subjects who produced them. Three normal adults were studied as they attempted to produce nonspeech velopharyngeal closure by use of two maneuvers: (1) laryngeal fixation and (2) modification of an elicited gag reflex. A rating system was devised to extract data from the videotapes. The findings indicated that subjects were able to utilize the videopanendoscopic feedback to guide voluntary velopharyngeal movements. The velopharyngeal movements were accompanied by larynx displacement and oth

Clinical pattern and risk factors for dyskinesias following fetal nigral transplantation in Parkinson's disease: a double blind video-based analysis.

The objective of this study is to assess dyskinesias in 34 Parkinson's disease patients randomized to receive bilateral fetal nigral transplantation with 4 donors per side (12), 1 donor per side (11), or placebo (11). Videotape recordings were performed at the baseline, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 month visits during the "practically defined off" (12 hours after last evening dopaminergic therapy) and "best on" (best response following morning dopaminergic therapy) states. Videotapes were analyzed in random order by a blinded investigator. Dyskinesias during "best on" (on-medication dyskinesia) were o…

Inadequate bleach contact times during syringe cleaning among injection drug users.

Objectives were to measure syringe cleaning strategies used by injection drug users (IDUs) and to assess syringe contact with bleach during cleaning demonstrations. IDUs were interviewed about cleaning activities during their most recent injection episode; they demonstrated these activities on videotape. Coders reviewed the videotapes, categorized activities, and used stop watches to record bleach exposure. Of 161, 146 subjects reported cleaning at last injection, 85 (58%) of 146 used full strength bleach. Of bleach users, 20% had total contact time (duration of bleach inside syringe) of > or

The ergonomics of laparoscopic surgery: a quantitative study of the time and motion of laparoscopic surgeons in live surgical environments.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery presents multiple ergonomic difficulties for the surgeon, requiring awkward body postures and prolonged static muscle loading that increases risk of musculoskeletal strain and injury. This prospective study quantitatively measures the biomechanical movements of surgeons during laparoscopic procedures to determine at-risk movements from prolonged static muscle loading and repetitive motions that may lead to injury. METHODS: A total of 150 video recordings of 18 surgeons, standing at the patient's left, were captured from three fixed camera positions during live

Microvascular abnormalities in the bulbar conjunctiva of contact lens users.

Soft contact lenses are commonly used to improve vision acuity or in cosmetic enhancement. We hypothesize that contact lens use can cause inadvertent damage to either the conjunctival microcirculation via direct vasoocclusion when the lens physically interacts with or damages the underlying vessels, or to the bulbar conjunctiva itself when the lens rests unevenly on the surface of the bulbar conjunctiva. Computer-assisted intravital microscopy was utilized to document (via video recording) and objectively quantify (via image analysis) real-time microvascular abnormalities resulting from change

Investigation of four distinct glottal configurations in classical singing--a pilot study.

This study investigates four qualities of singing voice in a classically trained baritone: "naive falsetto," "countertenor falsetto," "lyrical chest" and "full chest." Laryngeal configuration and vocal fold behavior in these qualities were studied using laryngeal videostroboscopy, videokymography, electroglottography, and sound spectrography. The data suggest that the four voice qualities were produced by independently manipulating mainly two laryngeal parameters: (1) the adduction of the arytenoid cartilages and (2) the thickening of the vocal folds. An independent control of the posterior ad

[Electrocautery snare efficacy in head and neck lesion treatment].

The electrocautery snare has been widely used in gastroenterology and to remove bronchial and urinary bladder lesions, but rarely in head and lesion electrocautery. Since October 2006, we have used this instrument to treat 17 head and neck granuloma, papilloma, cyst, and cancer lesions under local or general anesthesia. Lesions were localized in the larynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or tracheostoma. The snare was used through a rhinolaryngovideoscope in most cases with a current of 15-30 watts produced by an electrosurgical generator. All procedures were easy, quick and successful, with minimal

Generating physical symptoms from visual cues: An experimental study.

This experimental study explored whether the physical symptoms of cold, pain and itchiness could be generated by visual cues, whether they varied in the ease with which they could be generated and whether they were related to negative affect. Participants were randomly allocated by group to watch one of three videos relating to cold (e.g. ice, snow, wind), pain (e.g. sporting injuries, tattoos) or itchiness (e.g. head lice, scratching). They then rated their self-reported symptoms of cold, pain and itchiness as well as their negative affect (depression and anxiety). The researcher recorded the

Fast locomotor burst generation in late stage embryonic motility.

We examined muscle burst patterns and burst frequencies for a distinct form of repetitive leg movement recently identified in chick embryos at embryonic day (E)18 that had not been previously studied. The aim was to determine if burst frequencies during repetitive leg movements were indicative of a rhythm burst generator and if maturing muscle afferent mechanisms could modulate the rhythm. Electromyographic recordings synchronized with video were performed in ovo during spontaneous movement at E15, E18, and E20. Multiple leg muscles were rhythmically active during repetitive leg movements at E

The repeated confrontation with videotapes of spiders in multiple contexts attenuates renewal of fear in spider-anxious students.

In a treatment-analogue experiment, extinction of fear of spiders was investigated in a group of spider-anxious students. Two groups were created: in the single extinction group the extinction trials consisted of repeated presentations of a videotaped spider in one specific location of a house, whereas in the multiple extinction group the trials consisted of videotapes of the same spider in three different locations of a house. Also a control group was included that was exposed to videotapes of the location but without the spider. As reflected in skin conductance responses and self-report data

Video analysis of sensory-motor features in infants with fragile X syndrome at 9-12 months of age.

This study utilized retrospective video analysis to distinguish sensory-motor patterns in infants with fragile X syndrome (FXS) (n = 11) from other infants [i.e., autism (n = 11), other developmental delay (n = 10), typical (n = 11)] at 9-12 months of age. Measures of development, autistic features, and FMRP were assessed at the time of entry into the study. Home videos collected from families were edited and coded with previously validated procedures. Findings revealed a pattern of sensory-motor features (e.g., repetitive leg movements, posturing, less sophistication/repetitive use of objects
